A plastic bag for a portion of chips?

JoySzasz · 11/10/2015 15:03

Actually two portions - large.
I fully support the 5p charge, l've always got my reusable bags with me anyway.
However, on Friday the local chippy wanted to charge me for a flimsy plastic bag to take our chips home.
Chips are boiling hot, and greasy even through a couple of layers of paper.
I was under the impression that small shops won't /shouldn't charge? I also thought fast food was exempt?
If l return, l will (naturally) take a plastic bag. In the meantime AIBU? :)

Love the basin idea for fish and chips, might start doing that.

dementedma · 11/10/2015 17:36

It's been here in Scotland for ages. You get used to it. Goes to the government hers though, not charity

HoneyDragon · 11/10/2015 17:39

It was years ago, they argued I'd get stopped by security/people wouldn't know I'd purchased the clothes from Next.

They said if I wanted to leave the store with my goods they had to be in a branded bag and then I could put them in my bag outside Confused

Burntthedinneragain · 11/10/2015 17:41

HoneyDragon
They REFUSED to let you put the stuff in your own bag?!?? I hope you told them where to stick it! Or did they offer you a free bag on that occasion? Making it compulsory to purchase one of their bags is just absurd!

dementedpixie · 11/10/2015 17:44

It doesn't go to the government here. From the website about bag charges in scotland :

The net proceeds of the charge belong to your business, however Scottish Government is keen to see these donated to good causes.

HoneyDragon · 11/10/2015 17:57

I got there in the end, but I've not been back since, because it annoyed me that much Grin

RebootYourEngine · 11/10/2015 17:57

Wings - it is still the same re burger king. Our local chippy have a charity box where you put the money straight into if you want a bag. I always put mine into my canvas bag. In scotland i think everywhere charges for plastic and paper. The only place that hasnt charged me was the chemist when i was picking up ds' prescription.

Spartans · 11/10/2015 18:26

I don't think they should actually be charging it anyway. Sounds like a set of twats for to me

Fluffyears · 11/10/2015 19:22

It's amazing how much you can actually fit into a plastic bag once you don't want to pay for new ones in each shop. I know it's only 5p but it feels good not to buy any.

DisappointedOne · 11/10/2015 19:30

We've had charging in Wales for ages. Our chippy doesn't want the hassle of accounting for all the 5ps so they don't offer any bags for anything, ever.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 11/10/2015 19:36

I like a plastic bag for my chips if they're going in the car. Grease always makes its way to the outside of paper wrapping.

So are the chippy pocketing the 5p per bag, using the new legislation as a smoke screen for making an extra 5p profit off their customers?

itsbetterthanabox · 11/10/2015 21:19

It's so silly and bad service to pay for 1 bag for hot food.
Supermarkets use hundreds. I get it more with them but you need a bag for hot food. This rule is just stupid.

Summerdiamond · 11/10/2015 21:21

In Ireland we have been paying for plastic bags for years, 22c now. Paper bags are free tho no matter what shop, chemist, chipper, bookshop......,

Burntthedinneragain · 11/10/2015 21:21

Oh, lols Honeydragon!

StayWithMe · 11/10/2015 21:22

Iceland does good reusable shopping bags that you can chuck in the washing machine and dry in no time. They wrap up really small into an attached pouch, so you can carry some in your handbag. Nope I don work for them. Grin

StayWithMe · 11/10/2015 21:25

Forgot to say, you will find that now you're being charged for bags, they will get smaller when shops run out of old ones. Seriously, I've noticed it here in NI. I think the shits are using it as a profit making scam.

See, if you use a good stout basin like TheHouseOnTheLane's Nan did, that wouldn't happen.

ComposHatComesBack · 11/10/2015 21:50

The English only have themselves to blame, too many exceptions and grey areas. Just charge 5p on every bag just like we've done in Scotland and stop moaning it works fine.

Crazypetlady · 11/10/2015 22:45

Agree Compos It is all so confusing.
In wales it's 5p everywhere for small bags.
The shops can charge what they like for large.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 11/10/2015 22:47

The carrier bags in our co-op have got smaller already. Like two thirds the size.

HoneyDragon · 12/10/2015 00:51

Stop moaning? What, like. Actually stop moaning?! How very dare you, sir.

Wink
ComposHatComesBack · 12/10/2015 01:24

Honestly, it is a good thing. You get used to carrying a fold up bag and taking three or four sizeable bags for life for the weekly shop (which are actually way easier to carry up three flights of stairs) than umpteen carrier bags, the flat no longer has a plastic bag mountain and it is good for the environment. Plus charities get the money from people who are too lazy, forgetful or thoughtless to bring a bag with them.

I love fault finding, nit picking, sneering and moaining just as much as anyone else, but this is something which hasn't got a major downside and the adjustment in behaviour is so minor that it doesn't warrant any fuss.

Sniv · 12/10/2015 07:42

I agree, this is all my fault. Some pass me a basin to cry in.
