To think Radio 4 at 6.40 am today lost the plot with their stand alone piece on THERESA MAY's dress? FFS thought they were above that shite (please note I am not a fan of TM but...).

Agree squoosh and Kathy

SeratoninIsMyFriend · 07/10/2015 13:38

But did nobody notice the way the female presenter then pointedly remarked on how, elsewhere, TM's words got the attention... Blah blah. As if she too was hopelessly fed up of the clothes being more newsworthy than the politics!

JacquesHammer · 07/10/2015 13:42

George Osborne changed his name from Gideon when he was 13.

I hardly think of all the things people can find, that is a stick to beat him with.

It is hardly unusual for a teenager to not enjoy their name and want to change it. I wanted to be called Tamara for years Grin

UterusUterusGhali · 07/10/2015 14:39

Ed Miliband being the "son of a Marxist Russian Jew" was mentioned on any number of occasions during the election.

Now that's an "ethnic dog whistle" (!)

MyNightWithMaud · 07/10/2015 14:42

Indeed it was and is.

BarbarianMum · 07/10/2015 14:50

That's a fog horn not a dog whistle!

MyNightWithMaud · 07/10/2015 14:57

Yes, I was just musing on that, BarbarianMum. The EM comments were more of a klaxon, of a frequency audible to even the dullest ear, whereas others are more subtle.

GloGirl · 07/10/2015 15:04

I'm not a huge Osborne fan though. I'd like a catastrophic scandal to engulf him.

You mean like being caught in the company of a domme escort with some cocaine?

And there being a photograph of it?

That's already happened and he's still got a good chance of being the next PM. Bastard.

NationalTrustLadyGardens · 07/10/2015 15:50

I enjoy the lighter moments on the Today programme. And it's not sexist as I'm sure there has been stuff about Jeremy Corbyn's attire. And Boris Johnson's come to think of it.

howabout · 07/10/2015 16:05

As long as it is even handed and not headlining ok to mention dress with reference to politicians as just as in any other public profession they do use clothes as short hand to comment on themselves.

Too much middle aged collar bone on display for my delicate sensibilities but I don't approve of open necked shirts on men or women in the workplace and in schools reckon all dc should be fully buttoned up in polo shirts, crew neck t-shirts or shirt and tie. I am clearly a prude but it also keeps out the chill.

Not felt the urge to engage with what TM actually said as I feel it may be more upsetting than bare flesh before the watershed.

When I see George referred to as Gideon I always read it as Giddy which given his resolutely sober demeanour, in public at least, always makes me chuckle. Also I associate the name Gideon with the Gideon's bible which is only the NT and so is not Jewish.

LittleLionMansMummy · 07/10/2015 16:06

Yes GloGirl the man is the epitome of Teflon. I can certainly think of worse insults than 'Gideon' to lob in his direction. Still, he hasn't yet been outed as having indulged in pig skull-fuckery...

OTheHugeManatee · 07/10/2015 17:20

So much bile on this thread Confused

CautiousVisitor · 07/10/2015 17:33

As someone who has been personally affected by Theresa May's humane approch to immigration in this country, I found this obsession with her dress troubling on two levels: firstly, because can we please stop this focussing on a woman's appearance over anything else, please? and secondly, because it has distracted attention from the content of her speech, which is appalling. The thought of May as the PM of this country utterly appals me.

squoosh · 07/10/2015 17:38

Me too Cautious. I'm horrified at the prospect of TM at the helm.

bolleauxnouveau · 07/10/2015 17:38

Never heard that about Gideon being anti-semitic, isn't David one of the most famous ancient Jewish kings.

Anyway, back to the point, it's outrageous that her appearance is more newsworthy that her politics.

Grazia1984 · 07/10/2015 19:28

May's speech was very good and I want Osborne for next PM. Luckily mumsnet is a broad church including the Tory majority. Let us all hope for 10 years of Tory rule now we have that wonderful opportunity caused by the Corbyn election.

multivac · 07/10/2015 19:34

Ahh, Grazia, that's a beautiful sentiment.

elizadolittlechoc · 07/10/2015 20:08

Cough cough. Just back from a long day to see this discussion. In total agreement with Cautious. Yes there were a few cracks about Boris' hair etc, but no one quoted his barber, whether he is balding, had grey streaks or how much it cost. Not that I care either.
