To think Radio 4 at 6.40 am today lost the plot with their stand alone piece on THERESA MAY's dress? FFS thought they were above that shite (please note I am not a fan of TM but...).

OP posts:
PeopleLieActionsDont · 07/10/2015 10:09

Missing the point of the thread but I loved TM's dress.

But really, radio 4 need to get a fucking grip. What she wore is totally irrelevant.

Not getting the anti semitic thing. What's wrong with having a Jewish name? Why would it be insulting to call him by it?

I agree that most people call him Gideon because he clearly prefers George and so they enjoy irritating him.

IAmNotAWitch · 07/10/2015 10:16

Gideon is a Jewish name and when used as an insult it comes across as implying being Jewish is a bad thing and something he is trying to hide.

I still think there is an undercurrent of that.

SeaMagic · 07/10/2015 10:24

IAmNotAWitch but I still don't understand how you can assume that people using GO's name as per his birth certificate is anti-semetic Confused

GO is the one who changed his name to George. Why did he do that?

As others have said, if anything this indicates he might be anti-semetic. Or maybe not, maybe he is just trying to have a more common place name and seem more pleb like.

Who knows, who cares.

I know I am not anti-semetic and I will continue to call him Gideon, as he was christened, thank you very much. It is my small act of defiance against the arrogant, over privileged, out of touch tosser.

"Jeremy Corbyn looks a mess." I don't agree and I like that he dresses more normally. Not in sleek, expensive Savile Row suits as per GO and DC. Those two look like they have been stage managed and PR powder puffed to within an inch of their lives. JC looks like a real human in comparison, not a shiny robot.

Meanwhile Boris Johnson always looks a sartorial disgrace and no-one gives a shit because he's such a character Hmm

SeaMagic · 07/10/2015 10:27

Sorry, that last comment was to Hellocampers, not IAmNotAWitch.

UterusUterusGhali · 07/10/2015 10:33

See, Nancy, if you're interested, that's fab, but airtime being given to it, on a news programme in 2015 is fucking ridiculous.

A show on politician's clothes in General would be ok, as we could also hear about JC's vests and the jumper knitted by his mum.
But only talking about a politician's clothes if she has a vagina is crass.

I don't think there enough high profile women in politics and if fashion brings them to people's attention then I don't think that's sexist. I'm fed up of women in politics either looking like Anne Widdecombe and being a clown, lAughing stock or either dressing like a bloke and non sexual . I think the women's movement in British politics hasn't even got going .

BarbarianMum · 07/10/2015 10:59

SisterNancy that's the funniest and most deluded post I've read on here in a long time. Actually, you sound like my dad. Dad, is that you?

multivac · 07/10/2015 11:01

TM is the Home Secretary. It really doesn't take fashion to bring her, specifically, to people's attention. And for fashion to overshadow her proposals on asylum and immigration reform - delivered in a speech that was factually debatable at best - is pretty shameful.

Nothing wrong with a programme discussing fashion in politics (it would make a change from the politics of fashion). But diverting attention from this speech with squeaks about 'Victoria Beckham's favourite designer'? Really?

Horsemad · 07/10/2015 11:13

I thought the dress was fine for the occasion. No idea why the media have to make such a big deal over politician's clothes - completely unnecessary, imo.

SisterNancySinatra · 07/10/2015 11:17

Barbarianmum is that you " Jeremy Corbyn". 1970s twit.

Lweji · 07/10/2015 11:21

You know that politicians ties and shirts can be just as much a headache as the entire female attire?

The same for suits. It's not many that will show up in a pink suit. :) I'm sure one with a less straight forward uniform would attract about as much attention.

Interesting analysis of Politics and Fashion by Forbes

Grazia1984 · 07/10/2015 11:23

Yes, I hope the BBC realise how inappropriate it is to comment on her dress.

(I am a huge Osborne fan and want him to take over from Cameron in 5 years' time for the second 5 years of Tory rule which thankfully is coming, and could not care what he's called)

Backforthis · 07/10/2015 11:26

Exactly SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace. It's using a dropped name because he obviously doesn't like it.

To me Gideon = bibles or a very Catholic friend of my sister. I've never thought of it as a Jewish name.

squoosh · 07/10/2015 12:30

I've never though of it as a Jewish name either. I have the same Catholic and bible associations.

He was clearly trying to de-poshify himself a tad for the plebs.

squoosh · 07/10/2015 12:31

I'm not a huge Osborne fan though. I'd like a catastrophic scandal to engulf him.

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 07/10/2015 12:40

She dressed like a villain and she is a villain. It is perfectly reasonable to discuss it because it was striking and obviously sending a message.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/10/2015 12:42

I wouldn't be surprised if Gideon being a Jewish name was a factor - if he got ribbed for being Jewish at prep school, despite not being (and antisemitism was common enough at some posh schools in the 80s) then he can't very well now say 'I changed my name because I didn't like people thinking I was Jewish' so would have to just say 'I didn't like the name'.
It would make more sense than changing from Gideon to George to sound less posh, which I've never really understood as George sounds if anything more posh to me, and he was hanging out with other posh people - it's not like he'd just moved to a comp where he might have wanted to deposh himself to fit in.
And he did say he found life easier as George, which implies there was some kind of pisstaking involved.

squoosh · 07/10/2015 12:45

George sounds posher than Gideon?

Nah. George is an everyman name, from George Formby cleaning his windows to Prince George wearing his retro bloomers.

derxa · 07/10/2015 12:46

Gideon = posh George = neutral Nothing to do with anti-Semitism.
He's a slimy little snake but fgs he can call himself whatever he likes.

KathyBeale · 07/10/2015 12:46

I didn't know Gideon was a Jewish name either. Does anyone remember that cartoon about the duck called Gideon? It was slightly weird...

Off topic, but I did detect an undercurrent of anti-semitism in the way Ed Miliband was treated by the press. Even things like always mentioning that he's from North London, or whatever. He was always portrayed as slightly 'other'. I'm not Jewish but my husband is and we talked about it a lot during the election campaign as he found it quite uncomfortable.

I hate Theresa May but I hate the obsession with what female politicians wear even more.

EponasWildDaughter · 07/10/2015 12:48

The Telegraph - ''Beautiful bare shoulders''? Confused

It revealed no more than an average (lopsided) boat neck would.

and ''The look was Carmelite mother superior switches career to high-class escort, styled by Victoria Beckham.''

What a load of utter utter toadying tripe.

squoosh · 07/10/2015 12:51

''The look was Carmelite mother superior switches career to high-class escort, styled by Victoria Beckham.''

Yuck, yuck, and yuck again.

squoosh · 07/10/2015 12:53

Oh definitely Kathy, there was more than a dash of anti semitism aimed at Ed Miliband.

pinkfrocks · 07/10/2015 12:57

TM doesn't have the best dress sense looking at some of her previous faux pas, and this dress was clearly meant to impress. I liked her minimalist look which was hugely better than some things she has worn. I didn't think the bare shoulder was really appropriate for a formal occasion and I kept wondering what kind of bra was underneath.
But I don't think it is fodder for the press even if it is a discussion point for MN Style and Beauty forum.
