To think Radio 4 at 6.40 am today lost the plot with their stand alone piece on THERESA MAY's dress? FFS thought they were above that shite (please note I am not a fan of TM but...).

OP posts:
absolutelynotfabulous · 07/10/2015 09:09

little a pp said that Gideon is recognised anti-Semitic.

GloGirl · 07/10/2015 09:13

I actually feel a bit sick seeing the link to the politics section if a 'decent' broadsheet talking so much about what she wears.

FUCK YOU

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 07/10/2015 09:17

Allison Pearson, for example... blerk.

UterusUterusGhali · 07/10/2015 09:19

I don't think a screenshot of some internet is a valid argument that calling GO Gideon is antisemetic. Hmm

It's pathetic that TM's dress gets airtime after she gave one of the most hateful, dangerous speeches of her tenure.
It's like saying "ooh, Oswald, that black shirt is soooooo fetching".
(Not really. But kinda.)

MyNightWithMaud · 07/10/2015 09:20

I agree with the link in an earlier post - calling GO Gideon is an ethnic dog whistle, sneering at the implication that he might be Jewish. It's not about the name in itself.

UterusUterusGhali · 07/10/2015 09:22

Surely if GO changed his name to sound less Jewish he is the anti-Semite.
I was lead to believe he changed it to sound less "posh".

GruntledOne · 07/10/2015 09:25

Don't call thingy Gideon. It's recognised anti Semitic

No it isn't. He's not Jewish. It's recognised anti-post capitalist git.

GruntledOne · 07/10/2015 09:27

That should have been anti-posh, not anti-post

Hellocampers · 07/10/2015 09:27

The discussion about her dress is disgraceful on radio 4. She looked smart and that's all she needs to look.

Jeremy Corbyn looks a mess. That is probably fair enough to discuss as he should look smart as the rest of us have to for certain jobs. Politicians should dress the part.

The discussion concerning the name Gideon and why or not someone uses/changes their name is bloody ridiculous as it's his personal choice.

Many people change their names or use a nick name and that's purely their business.

Shutthatdoor · 07/10/2015 09:37

I don't think a screenshot of some internet is a valid argument that calling GO Gideon is antisemetic

It was an explanation as to why some believe it is!

LittleLionMansMummy · 07/10/2015 09:38

Hellocampers I think the discussion about Gideon has been an attempt to clarify a pp's meaning. Perhaps Brenda will return to stop the speculation and explain what she means.

Hellocampers · 07/10/2015 09:41

Yes LittleLion see your point. Smile

BarbarianMum · 07/10/2015 09:41

So, for those who say referring to George Osbourne is not an ethnic dog whistle, why else would you do it? Typically you refer to a person by the name they use, or a derivative of the same, don't you?

ANamechangeWillDoYouGood · 07/10/2015 09:42

Oh for Christ's sake. I saw the dress and thought it was slightly unusual, but that it suited her. It certainly should not have detracted from the content of her speech!

Maybe we should make all politicians deliver their words from within a shrouded box and use digital mastery over their voices so you can't tell if they're male or female. Only then will people focus on the fucking message rather than tailoring their attention according to whether the speaker owns a penis.

And breathe.

UterusUterusGhali · 07/10/2015 09:47

Tbh I didn't know he had Jewish ancestry so how could it be anti-semetic?

As Gruntled says it's a posh-git thing.
Not that I have anything against posh gits per se, but it sticks in the craw somewhat that someone from such privilege can be so fucking ruthless towards those worse off.

Bettercallsaul1 · 07/10/2015 09:50

I, too, thought that the name change was an (unsucessful) attempt to appear as a man of the people, similar to Call-me-Dave.

Lweji · 07/10/2015 09:51

She clearly needs to only wear the coloured fitted jackets that the likes of Angela Merkel wear.

I wasn't too keen on her wearing bare shoulders to an official dinner, but this is ridiculous.

hackmum · 07/10/2015 09:52

"So, for those who say referring to George Osbourne is not an ethnic dog whistle, why else would you do it?"

As others have said, people do it because they think Gideon sounds posh. I don't think most people would even realise it's a Jewish name, as most people these days don't have the biblical education that would lead them to recognise it.

multivac · 07/10/2015 09:52

Female politician makes hate-filled speech in a bid to become Party leader.

Media gets all of a tizzy about her frock.

Bettercallsaul1 · 07/10/2015 09:57

Agree with hackmum. I had no idea that Gideon was a traditionally Jewish name. To the unsuspecting ear, it is just another flowery, fancy "posh* name indulged in by the privileged classes.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 07/10/2015 10:00

Re. Gideon - I assumed most people did it for the same - slightly childish but pleasing - reason I do: we know he changed it and so prefers George, so calling him by name he obviously dislikes is a small act to demonstrate our dislike of him.

Mind you, I more often refer to him simply as The Millionaire, George Osborne.

IAmNotAWitch · 07/10/2015 10:01

I had assumed people were being anti-semetic when it is used on here.

Might be something for posters who use it to consider.

Dress looks fine to me, can't imagine why anyone cares.

SwedishEdith · 07/10/2015 10:03

Female politician makes hate-filled speech in a bid to become Party leader- which is probably why she wore the dress.

I had no idea Gideon was an Jewish name, had simply never occurred to me. Just assumed both a not-nice sounding and posh-boy name. Never, ever, ever thought I would defend GO on anything but I can see exactly why he wanted to change his name.

SwedishEdith · 07/10/2015 10:05

But, agree with Seek that it is childishly pleasing to keep using it.

SisterNancySinatra · 07/10/2015 10:08

I think it is important how women in British politics dress . Years ago Princess Diana realised what she wore spoke more than what she could actually say in public. The British public may not like the plastic well groomed look the female American politicians go for but british fashion can be very understated but can also give a woman an identity . I'm interested in Nicola Sturgeons look, her fabrics she wears have a Scottish look to them , as though they are hard wearing and natural fibres . I think fashion and women in politics is very interesting .
