In the last few weeks, in my local area, I have seen a number of examples of temporary road signs which have been left up way past them being needed.
Example 1: Road sign on an A road saying "Road closed ahead at level crossing". This sign was wrong on a number of levels. a) There is no level crossing on that particular road for approx 40 miles.b)There are level crossings on various B/minor roads off the A road but at 3 miles (on a road unlikely to be used by most of the traffic on that A road), 5 miles and 12 miles. The sign was up for at least 5 weeks and had no road number on it - and to the best of my knowledge, none of the level crossing mentioned were actually closed.
Example 2: Dual carriageway with lane closure sign for the last 3 weeks. Now there were roadworks and there probably will be again as this is ongoing work by an electricity company. But, the lane is currently open with the road closure cones on the central reservation (like this for 3 weeks). I think this has the potential to cause an accident, as at the point when they re-commence works, they will put the cones back out, but anyone local will have ignored the signs that have been incorrect for the last few weeks and will be faced with cutting in when they see the lane is actually closed.
Example 3: Caution Motorcycle event in progress. This sign was put out for a charity gathering of motorbikes 2 Sundays ago. There are also regular Thursday evening meets but the sign has been left there for the last couple of weeks. Surely this has the potential for regular users of that bit of road to take the sign with a 'pinch of salt' and ignore it on the very day that the event is actually on - thus negating the purpose of the warning.
I have also seen a number of examples of poor and incorrect signage in other areas recently - not least of all a road closure sign yesterday in which the road works didn't actually close the road (they were on one side of the road with traffic lights on) and yet signs had been placed across the exit road off a roundabout saying the road was closed so we drove through the small gap in the signs to avoid a 4 mile diversion
So AIBU to think someone should be accountable for these signs and fines should be handed out for inappropriate signs which have been left up needlessly
