Nipped into HB earlier as wanted to see if cherry Twizzlers were back in, as been only hateful strawberry ones there for weeks..the bastards! But yes, they were :-)

Halloween section all out in the first aisle . I love most things spooky/gory/horror unless real life.. was surprised to see a pile of books in the centre of all the skulls and pumpkins... one title on Harold Shipman and another on the Moors Murderers.
AIBU to think it does piss a bit, on the victims and their families? After all, it's real life horror amongst all the fun tat, the party and Trick or Treat stuff.
Ian Brady and Myra Hindley were child torturers and murderers. Would the store for example have placed a book on, say, Baby P or James Bulger, in the same section?
The moors murders were so long ago but their familes are still out there. As for Shipman, that's incredibly recent compared to the Moors
I would say ok in a book section but not with the Halloween. Why? Is there a selling suggestion that a child would go T or T with a book on the Moors Murderers under her arm? Or on the coffee table of a Halloween party?
Expect I'll be called oldfashioned and boring now but just seems a bit odd to me
If you were say the daughter of a Shipman victim, would you want to walk into a HB store and see that in amongst the plastic tat sold as a party accessory?

You're being a bit too sensitive I think.

theycallmemellojello · 04/10/2015 18:02

Yanbu, that's grim. People do do tasteless 'real life' costumes though so it's not like this shop invented the connection themselves. But somehow I'm more ok with it when it's some idiot 20 something trying to be clever and shocking than a shop trying to make money.

Shallishanti · 04/10/2015 18:03

YANBU at all
people directly affected by both those cases are still alive, and bith wel within living memory
I'd be inclined to complain

celtictoast · 04/10/2015 18:05

YANBU

FarFromAnyRoad · 04/10/2015 18:05

All that strikethrough and for what? Shock Hmm

I think you're being over sensitive but do by all means write to their Head Office and tell them - it'll give them something to laugh about over lunch.

buddhasbelly · 04/10/2015 18:10

an exbf of mine's brother got cakes made one year to take into the office for hallowe'en with fred and rose west's faces on them (one of those companies that does the photo image cupcake things).

I though that was horribly distasteful, his family all thought it was hilarious. One of the many reasons he became an ex.

TwatByName · 04/10/2015 18:17

YNBU

alltoomuchrightnow · 04/10/2015 18:20

i'm actually a witch, and usually a very un PC person so not exactly po faced with a cat bum mouth, but more openminded than most. I guess it's because I've known families of people murdered , one horrific recent one being in DP's family. As I said.. you wouldn't put a book on Baby P in the halloween section.

YANBU. That's really awful and tasteless. There is a difference between 'fun' horror and really horrific things that happen to real people.

EponasWildDaughter · 04/10/2015 18:22

YANBU

alltoomuchrightnow · 04/10/2015 18:23

I didn't say not sell them. In another section, perhaps ok. These books were kind of glorified as I recall, ie gaudy covers with blood splatters. I just think it's all too recent. Perhaps those who think it's ok haven't read the accounts of the tortures and murders of those children, once read never forgotten. Older history such as Jack the Ripper, fine in the Halloween section i'd say but it was just MM and HS.

TimonAndPumbaa · 04/10/2015 18:26

Yanbu! I reckon it might be a young, inexperienced member of staff that's put them there as in my local home bargains I noticed them selling those books but they're in the aisle with all the other books, not in the halloween aisle! It's just awful really, a book about some dreadful, recent murders and as you say some involving children, placed amongst jokes and tat. Really, really awful imo. Hopefully another member of staff will realise how inappropriate it is and put the books back in the right department!

TimonAndPumbaa · 04/10/2015 18:28

It might even be worth you giving the store a ring and talking to the manager.

SecretWineBox · 04/10/2015 18:30

OP, I agree with you.

I also think that way the murder and butchery of women in poverty is quite literally, a side show in London is horrific.

nameinlights · 04/10/2015 18:36

Yanbu. That's totally inappropriate. Those people lost their lives and it's not something the should be in a light hearted Halloween section. It reminds me of the ghastly jack the ripper tours which turn the murder of women in to a tourist attraction.

mileend2bermondsey · 04/10/2015 18:40

YANBU that is appalling.

mileend2bermondsey · 04/10/2015 18:42

This is the only time I have thought this is something worthy of going to the newspapers about, as clearly the Home Bargains managers are too thick to see why this is grossly inappropriate. Sickening.

Shockers · 04/10/2015 18:48

I agree with you too. These aren't stories, these are horrific crimes with real victims, within our lifetime.

Really inappropriate.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 04/10/2015 18:56

very inappropriate, I'd complain.

badgergirl82 · 04/10/2015 18:59

I do know what you mean, but just the same it fits in a sense, in a more 'adult' way then T or T. Horror movies are often shown st the cinema during Halloween - saw the original Carrie in 2010, I think.

Apparently, my brother looks like Ian Brady though Hmm which I don't love being pointed out!

Cel982 · 04/10/2015 18:59

YANBU, that's really tasteless.

PuppyMonkey · 04/10/2015 19:02

Don't think head office will laugh at you actually.

thunderbird69 · 04/10/2015 19:11

YANBU that is disgusting, I hope you do complain and let us know what they say if you do.

mileend2bermondsey · 04/10/2015 19:23

badger WTH does that have to do with anything?? How can you compare the real life torture, murder and rape of adults and children with a film?! You realise Carrie isn't a documentary right?

Also WTF is this sentence I do know what you mean, but just the same it fits in a sense, in a more 'adult' way then T or T ? Jesus . . .

RabbitSaysWoof · 04/10/2015 19:39

YANBU op , its not a funny novelty, I don't think an email to the store would be over the top at all.
