to think you don't go on holiday whilst having a high risk pregnancy and without adequate insurance

Woman gives birth after food poisoning whilst on holiday in the Dominic Republic.

She had a cervical cerclage so knew she had a high risk pregnancy.

Her insurance didn't cover her entire pregnancy.

They are now stranded with a premature baby in a foreign country with no financial help and are relying on donations and GoFundMe.

I have made a donation but inside I feel almost angry. Why on earth have they let themselves be in this situation? That poor poor child.

Why are you not all having a go at the insurance company for being so fucking inefficient that a premature baby's life has been put at further risk?

sleepyelectricsheep · 06/10/2015 22:20

"I think that people are naturally cautious"

Cautious is fine. If people choose not to donate as they feel unsure, that's their choice of course.

Coming onto mumsnet and calling a family in terrible circumstances all sorts of names when no one knows the full facts is not what I'd call "cautious" behaviour.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 06/10/2015 22:21

We have every reason not to believe them since they have lied more than once.
All that nonsense about the baby being born 15 minutes before the insurance cut off...lies.
Saying the insurance won't pay..lie.
Saying they need the money to move to private...lie, since they say they don't want to move.

They made a stupid decision to go. They also didn't have adequate insurance. They are lucky that the policy they have covers them at all. But it does. The insurance company stated they were even paying for phone calls and taxis for them.
Over SEVENTY THOUSAND pounds they have of other peoples money, when they have been told the insurance is covering everything, and they refuse to close down the page so its still going up. It's nothing but theft.

Only1scoop · 06/10/2015 22:21

They were covered by a technicality....due to how she went into labour from what I understand.

I'm not on FB so can't comment.

I think it's the GFM still being live that must be causing the reactions.

There are people asking to be refunded.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/10/2015 22:27

Taken from the Q&A section of the Gofundme site:

While it's free to create and share your online fundraising campaign, GoFundMe will deduct a 5% fee from each donation that you receive. Since our fee is deducted automatically, you'll never need to worry about being billed or owing us any money. A small processing fee of about 3% will also be deducted from each donation

sleepyelectricsheep · 06/10/2015 22:28

Constance we will have to agree to disagree. We do not know the full story yet, but what I see is a family doing their best in very difficult circumstances and I feel nothing but compassion for the parents and their baby. I wish them the very best.

It must be reassuring that everything is so black and white in your world. However I think the smarter response is to have a bit of empathy and put yourself in other people's shoes before making accusations based on such little information.

Also, have a heart and some fucking respect, why don't you? Their prem baby is in a terrible hospital in a country they don't know. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I can't understand the mentality of people like you who want to have a go at people in such awful circumstances.

I donated and I couldn't give a monkey's what they do with the money. I just hope the baby is OK.

Did you donate? No? Then stop going on about the money. It's fuck all to do with you.

Only1scoop · 06/10/2015 22:29

One of recent donations was for 500 so that's quite a chunk even from that one donation.

sleepyelectricsheep · 06/10/2015 22:29

"I think it's the GFM still being live that must be causing the reactions."

No, that's just the latest thing. People on this thread have been having a go since way before that, and they'll carry on after it closes.

Only1scoop · 06/10/2015 22:31

'A processing fee of about 3 percent'

So I guess that could increase or decrease....

Mega bucks whichever way you look at it.

sleepyelectricsheep · 06/10/2015 22:32

How about this - hands up anyone on this thread who actually donated?

I did, and I am happy for them to use my money as they choose. I wouldn't wish their situation on anyone and I just hope their baby gets better.

Anyone else who did not donate, stop going on about the money, it is not your money, it is nothing to do with you.

Or is it jealousy rearing its ugly head? In which case you need your heads read if you're jealous of people in their situation. Seriously.

Only1scoop · 06/10/2015 22:33

No I haven't donated.

To be honest I'm quite comfortable with that.

I certainly don't think anyone is 'jealous'. A little odd to think that.

Cerseirys · 06/10/2015 22:40

Well yes, you would need your head read if you were jealous of this couple. Only I don't think anyone here actually is Hmm

I can't put myself in their shoes, since I would never be in that situation in the first place, and if I somehow was, my reaction wouldn't be to try and get cash from thousands of strangers.

Little information my arse. We have loads, and its easy to see the situation here.

sleepyelectricsheep · 06/10/2015 23:06

"sob story"

That's pretty belittling of what this family must have gone through in the last couple of weeks.

These people have had a horrendous ordeal and their baby is not yet in the clear.

What do you mean "more genuine people are disbelieved" do you think they are making the prem baby and terrible conditions up?

If not then where is your compassion FFS?

PrincessTooty · 06/10/2015 23:07

They have posted two photos of Evie on the Facebook page. She is tiny.

I think it's ok to discuss the way the fundraising is being carried out. Im sure that people who are questioning things still want the best for the baby. Confused

sleepyelectricsheep · 06/10/2015 23:08

"I can't put myself in their shoes, since I would never be in that situation in the first place"

No of course not. You've never made a mistake in your life have you?

And insurance companies don't lie, or manage the truth so they make themselves look good.

And pigs might fly,

sleepyelectricsheep · 06/10/2015 23:09

"Im sure that people who are questioning things still want the best for the baby."

Many posters here seem wholly unconcerned about the baby IMO, they seem much more concerned about the money.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 06/10/2015 23:10

No of course not. You've never made a mistake in your life have you?

Plenty. Not one quite this stupid though.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 06/10/2015 23:10

You related to these people sheep? Or just a one woman campaign for more dosh them?
