to think you don't go on holiday whilst having a high risk pregnancy and without adequate insurance

Woman gives birth after food poisoning whilst on holiday in the Dominic Republic.

She had a cervical cerclage so knew she had a high risk pregnancy.

Her insurance didn't cover her entire pregnancy.

They are now stranded with a premature baby in a foreign country with no financial help and are relying on donations and GoFundMe.

I have made a donation but inside I feel almost angry. Why on earth have they let themselves be in this situation? That poor poor child.

Someone on the gofundme page is now requesting a refund...

bettyberry · 05/10/2015 14:31

Cerseirys I didn't realise that they did that with their gofundme support! thats wrong.

As for this couple, the money was raised to pay for medical bills. Those are now being paid and the money is no longer needed. They need to offer everyone a refund and if people don't want a refund it should be donated.

SansaryaAgain · 05/10/2015 14:31

So basically they set up the gofundme before they even had any confirmation of whether or not the insurance company would pay out? Something not quite right there...

saucony · 05/10/2015 14:39

I'm afraid I still think the parents were stupid for not having adequate cover. Obviously it's good news that the baby's treatment will be fully funded but they have could have saved some heartache and worry by having the correct policy in the first place.

Stanky · 05/10/2015 14:40

I wish baby Evie all the best, and hope that the money raised can help the other babies in the hospital.

clam · 05/10/2015 14:42

"....and hope that the money raised can help the other babies in the hospital."

Not a chance in hell.

No doubt abuse will follow Hmm

This includes (some/all?) of the insurance companies press release (copied from the Metro article linked to just below by a pp)

Mother feared £185,000 medical bill for daughter born premature on holiday

A family feared being left with a possible £185,000 medical bill after a time difference threatened to invalidate their insurance claims.
Pregnant Sharon Halls was at a friends wedding in the Dominican Republic when she was taken to hospital with early contractions.
The 36-year-old was forced to seek private medical care due to the infection which brought on the contractions.
Baby Evie was born prematurely and being cared for at the hospital for $2,500 (£1,640) a day.
Sharon said medical insurance covered her if she gave birth within 29 weeks – she delivered after 28 weeks and six days at 10.45am.
However Sharon and her partner Daniel Compton feared that Infinity Insurance Solutions would not be able to cover any costs for care while the family were in the Dominican Republic due to the time difference.
An Infinity Insurance Solution spokesperson told Metro.co.uk that Sharon’s insurance policy only covered ‘up to 28 weeks’, however after 28 weeks ‘normal birth is not covered but the needs of the baby are’.
‘Estimating gestational age is always difficult and the gestational age of the baby just prior to birth was found to be 29 weeks and 4 days, but cover for the baby’s needs was never in doubt. At no time has any member of the family been told there was no cover,’ they added.

The couple say they were advised to take their new daughter to a public hospital, which they say is dirty, and have set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds in order to get Evie back to a private hospital.
So far the page has raised more than £65,000.
‘The sanitation and level of care is next to nothing, she was placed in dirty incubator lined up next to other sick new born babies,’ Sharon said.
‘The equipment was old and even the blanket she laid on was stained and ripped.
‘At this point I cannot be too proud to ask for help as our little Evie needs to come home and in the meantime receive the best care possible.’

Sharon also told of being harassed by the private hospital while she and Daniel struggled to scrape the money together for the initial payments for their daughter’s care.
She said: ‘The public relations people continued to demand money to the point of harassment even pulling us out of our one hour time slot we got with Evie to contact the insurers again.’
Sharon’s mother, Angela, told Metro.co.uk: ‘Evie is making progress, and they think she will be released from hospital in a week or so.
‘However getting her home will be difficult, and she might not be able to fly until December.
‘Sharon has still not been able to hold Evie because she is so tiny, so I think the next mile stone will be when she is able to hold her baby daughter for the first time.’
Angela also mentioned that she has read some negative comments directed at Sharon for travelling while she is pregnant, however the NHS say pregnant women are fine to fly before 36 weeks if they have discussed it with their GP.
Infinity Insurance Solutions released the following statement: ‘IIS does not understand why the time difference has been reported as an issue in this case. All travel policies for leisure purposes sold in the UK have a stipulation on travelling when pregnant. In this case, the policy wording clearly states that pregnancy and childbirth are covered up to 28 weeks. After 28 weeks, normal birth is not covered but the needs of the baby are. Estimating gestational age is always difficult and the gestational age of the baby just prior to birth was found to be 29 weeks and 4 days, but cover for the baby’s needs was never in doubt. At no time has any member of the family been told there was no cover, moreover the time difference between the UK and the Dominican Republic is irrelevant and has never been mentioned by any of our staff
‘The facts are that Ms Halls presented in early labour at a private clinic that told her that they did not have the facilities to treat her and the premature baby, and made it clear that all treatment depended upon prior payment. Faced with this appalling threat, Ms Halls paid for the treatment with a debit card and paid a further sum to be transferred to Santo Domingo. We advised all involved in the case to transfer Ms Halls to the national maternity hospital in the capital Santo Domingo; an excellent hospital that was refurbished with new facilities in 2013. The clinic, however, transferred Ms Halls to their own larger clinic in Santo Domingo. Ms Halls paid for the treatment to date with a debit card and arranged for a further sum to be transferred to the second private clinic in Santo Domingo.
The onset of Ms Halls premature labour was triggered by an illness which falls within policy terms and conditions, therefore all of Ms Halls’ costs incurred to date will be reimbursed. All future costs in relation to Ms Halls’ medical needs abroad, as well as those of Evie will be covered by the policy and the family will be repatriated just as soon as Evie is well enough to travel without risk
‘Although not technically covered by the policy, Ms Halls’ telephone costs and taxi fares will be reimbursed as we consider this to be necessary for her safety. These costs are being covered “ex-gratia”, because we are sympathetic to the particularly difficult circumstances in which the family finds itself.‘

from the Facebook page

"Message from Evie's mummy.....she has said that the donations raised so far, and that continue to come in will be halfed between the hospital Evie is in now and a baby unit in England..positive news xxx"

No update on the GoFundMe page though, i hope they look at Dax's parents as an example of what NOT to do - as sadly, they will never be free of the stigma caused by their actions. Why they didnt just do a donation to RMH and publicise how much it was is beyond me. They just look dodgy, whether they are or not

LittleRedSparke · 05/10/2015 14:51

she says she hasnt updated the GoFundMe page yet as the WiFi is whiffy

MoonSandwich · 05/10/2015 14:52

The GoFundMe page is still up and donations are still being made. You can send questions to the person who set up the page....

Every hour they leave it up means that many more people are donating in belief they are helping pay medical bills.

MoonSandwich · 05/10/2015 14:54

If they donate all the money split between the two hospitals then I will very happily make a donation. Smile

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/10/2015 14:56

she says she hasnt updated the GoFundMe page yet as the WiFi is whiffy

But good enough to post on FB apparently?

Excellent news about donations being split between the DR hospital and the English baby unit, of course - though as with Dax's parents I wonder if anyone will ever actually know whether it's been done?

MoonSandwich · 05/10/2015 14:58

I can't see the statement about splitting the donations on the Facebook page?

Cerseirys · 05/10/2015 15:00

Angela also mentioned that she has read some negative comments directed at Sharon for travelling while she is pregnant, however the NHS say pregnant women are fine to fly before 36 weeks if they have discussed it with their GP.

No, the comments have been that it's unwise to fly when you have a HIGH RISK pregnancy. Big difference.

LittleRedSparke · 05/10/2015 15:04

the facebook post

"I need to see it in black and white" = "I'm not taking down the appeal until everyone knows for sure I'm taking the hand"

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 05/10/2015 15:08

I haven't seen negative comments about flying when pregnant per se. I have seen plenty of comments that it was rather stupid to travel to the DR in a complicated pregnancy. Rather different things. ..

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/10/2015 15:11

There's no denying getting things in writing is sensible, but I'd have thought that the statement/agreement to pay being plastered all over the media is, if anything, better - whatever the rights and wrongs of the policy purchase, to go back on that now would be commercial suicide

Which leaves the question of what the reason for delay in amending the GoFundMe page really is??

Only1scoop · 05/10/2015 15:11

What a load of crap re the flying and what the 'NHS say'

InimitableJeeves · 05/10/2015 15:16

If they donate all the money split between the two hospitals then I will very happily make a donation.

But why? The hospital in Dominica is going to get paid in full by the insurance company. If you want to make donations to hospitals in the UK, fine, but why only in this instance?

It seems to me that they clearly should be offering refunds to everyone who donated rather than just arbitrarily taking the money and donating it elsewhere.

Only1scoop · 05/10/2015 15:19

Of course there should be a refund option.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/10/2015 15:31

Of course there should be a refund option

Well yes, but then GoFundMe's own commercial interests come into play. Let's not forget they take 8% of donations, so they'd lose out on this with refunded money ... unless they just took it anyway and left the recipients to pick up the tab for refunds??

MoonSandwich · 05/10/2015 15:36

The hospital she is in now is not the private hospital so I'd be happy to donate to that and I'm happy to donate to UK baby units.

I wouldn't donate to the private hospital.
