To be cross about paying £40 for a camcorder SD card

Lovely DH bought me a Canon Camcorder for my birthday last week. It needs a memory card so today went into Jessops and the assistant firstly tried to flog me an £60 before I settled on a £40 card.

I know nothing about memory cards but are they truly that expensive?? I have the feeling I've been ripped off but have no expertise. Half a mind to return it.

It depends what size memory card it is but if it's the usual 32gb class 10 (because you want to use it for video) then £40 does seem very expensive. I buy my memory cards online and would expect to pay less than £20. Is there anything special about your £40 memory card?

Expensive for online, but about what you expect from shops.
Amazon (but not from abroad) is generally good, reliable and cheap.

You've been robbed, I'm guessing you didn't shop around first. I've just bought one from Wilko for a fiver (16gb class 10)

In that sort of situation I always take the details and then go home & read up/look for cheaper ones.

"Real" shops are horrendously expensive for things like this, I'd always buy online.

Totally depends on the spec of the card but it's always going to be more expensive in store. Compared to how much the tapes used to be (especially as there were effectively single use only) £40 (or £60) is nothing!

I use these Samsung 32Gb in my kit, and they're not the cheapest out there at £9.50

Camcorder tapes weren't that expensive & could be re-used......

they were really expensive and most people wouldn't have reused the a stewy were precious memories. Unlike a memory card today you couldn't upload them to your pc and then re-use them.

Same card is £10 from Amazon, and it's actually a slower, older model

You can get 32gb for under £10, 64gb for £15, 128gb for £30.

£40 is an absolute rip-off.

You should have been able to find a bit cheaper if your time is worth less than that. The first SD (2008?) I bought was about that price for 1Gb and too slow for continuous video. The last SD I bought was for a dashcam. I needed class 6 but WH Smiths had a choice of 4 or 10. 16Gb 25 Mb/s was £10 but it was about £40 for a 32Gb card (go figure that). But to piss you off even more I am sure that within 12 months you will find it far cheaper, even on the high street. Just to further stir the pot: In 1970 32Gb of memory would set you back about £2.5M and be far too slow for video. And IIRC the computer on the Apollo lander was 64kb and was state of art.

Take it back. Get refund of you can. It's a mad price. I would be so tempted to tell them that I feel ripped off. Buy from Amazon or suchlike!

It's a SanDisk Ultra SDHC card 32 GB.

I don't need anything professional just something for family use.

Taking it back today!!

Good. £40 is ridiculously expensive. Amazon has been mentioned as a good place to buy memory cards. I have used www.lowcostmemory.co.uk for a few years now and find them good value just remember to look at the read/write speeds of any cards you are considering. I always buy a card with faster speeds for video.

If you do buy a card online try to stick to UK sellers or those sold by Amazon rather than a third party using Amazon marketplace as there are some fake cards that overstate their capacity.

Jessops are always a rip off when it comes to memory cards. Great for other stuff, but not memory cards.

Shops like Jessops, PC World, Currys etc are horrendously expensive for stuff like that - it's where they make a lot of their money. PC World charge about 15 quid for a USB cable that are pence off ebay.

Online all the way, but beware of fakes. I never buy from ebay or Amazon 3rd party because they're often fake. But actual Amazon, www.mymemory.co.uk or 7dayshop are also good.

I assume you're talking about film then rather than the 8mm video cassettes - as we had loads of them, they were easy to transfer to regular VHS & then you could use them again.

I used to use digital 8 tapes though could use hi 8 too, I could put the footage onto the computer but not easily and I've got no idea how I would have transferred onto VHS. All our home videos from a different camera are still on the original tapes, some tapes weren't able to be filmed over even if/when you managed to clear them.
