AIBU to think school should not be encouraging children to wield guns?

Looking at some country boarding schools and have been suprised to see that target and clay shooting are offered as activities. I grew up fairly rurally, but am still a bit "hmmm?" About this.. Are my concerns valid or do I need to accept that these things are the norm at 'country's schools?

They have gun classes and activities for the scout camps here in America. It teaches weapon safety and it's a bit of fun to shoot at discs. There were never any accidents and the kids all took it very seriously. I would assume they all need parental permission before shooting a gun, so if they're doing it the parents are ok with it and there's nothing to worry about.

I did shooting through cadets, it was great fun (good at teaching determination, resilience, patience etc etc)and never left me wanting to hurt anyone.

Would you feel the same about archery which could be similarly dangerous if used as a weapon by a skilled person?
