School visit, smelly toilets

DD will have to move school (unavoidable).

I've been to visit two possibilities.

  1. fairly uninspiring. Recent inspection not great, particularly for children with additional needs. Everything was fine, just a bit... dull.

  2. lovely staff, couldn't do enough to help me (even the receptionist!) I went to visit the P1 class. There was such a lovely atmosphere and very child friendly. DD would have a ball there.

But as I was walking down the corridor in number 2), the toilets stunk. It was really, really unpleasant.

AIBU to be put off?!

Yes, it really put me off. I find cleanliness important!

Well, the "uninspiring" option is still there. I'm sure your daughter will thank you.

I can see why it disgusted you, I was very surprised just how stinky school toilets can be.

Some of it is old plumbing, but most of it is simply because young children aim badly and seldom flush their waste away. Many haven't been to the toilet unsupervised when entering reception. Plenty of debris in the bowls, no toilet tissue use evident and sinks dry. I am amazed they don't breed cholera in schools, but it really is not a sign of a bad school.

donajimena · 01/10/2015 21:55

I can still smell the boys toilets from 28 years ago at my old high school.. it was 30 years old then. 30 years of poor aim.
The girls loos had those incinerators in does anyone else remember those?
I digress...

Ineedtimeoff · 01/10/2015 22:02

I remember those incinerators! Gosh, that makes me feel old. As a child they confused me no end and my mother never gave me a straight answer as to what they were for.

penguinsarecool · 01/10/2015 22:07

Those loo's are probably very busy to be fair to the school or any school by that matter.

reni2 · 01/10/2015 22:21

Incinerators! Imagine getting that past health and safety now!

swimmerforlife · 01/10/2015 22:34

The toilets at my primary school absolutely reeked and were disgusting after morning tea. Loo roll stuffed down them etc.

donajimena · 01/10/2015 23:36

The incinerators were used for crisp packets IIRC...

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 01/10/2015 23:47

my bathroom stunk after having a few of ds friends over for a playdate

pee on the floor, stinky farts, poo stripes in the loo how can they be so smelly they are only 7

Dollymixtureyumyum · 02/10/2015 01:27

Poss not as bad as when school toilets used to smell of smoke and have that smoking haze in them. You used to come out gasping for air.

Dollymixtureyumyum · 02/10/2015 01:28

An sorry just realised this is about a primary school and not a high school. You must all have been wondering what sort of primary school I went to that the toilets where full of smoke Grin

reni2 · 02/10/2015 01:32

I'm beginning to think the fag smoke was quite effective in covering the stench of shit, no bad thing really. Shame it's turned out to be not so great for kid's lungs, it would be a low cost solution.

THAT IS RIGHT. NEVER HAVE I EVER SMELT GOOD SMELLS AT ANY SCHOOL IN THE TOILETS. NOW I KNOW WHY TEACHERS SAY NO WHEN CHILDREN SAY "CAN I GO TO THE TOILET.". DON'T GET ME STARTED ON SATs WEEK. HAVING TO GO TO TOILETS WITH CRAP-MADE '67' WROTE ALL OVER WALLS. HOW DISGRACEFUL. THAT'S WHY I HOME-SCHOOL MY CHILDREN. 💩🙄😓🤮

zingally · 14/05/2026 15:58

I'm a primary school supply teacher, and tbh, all school toilets reek by 2:30 in the afternoon. Think how many kids have been in and out? They are gross everywhere.
This is especially true in older buildings, where the plumbing isn't up to much/is aging.

I wouldn't judge a school by some end-of-day smelly loos.
