Landlord had to pop in today with the Gas safety inspector. I happened to be at home as I'm not working today. Before leaving, he glanced down the corridor into my bedroom and said "oh, you've still got your curtains closed, I hope we've not disturbed you after a nighshift?" "No no" says I "I'm off till the weekend"

Gas man then asks what I do and we have a little chat about it. They leave.

5 minutes later, knock on the door. Gas man has left his gas detector thingy on the kitchen side. Off I toddle to get it. Find Landlord coming out of my bedroom. I ask what he's doing and he says he was opening my curtains for me as I still hadn't Shock To which I said thank you, but I prefer to keep them closed and I'd rather he didn't randomly wander into my bedroom thank you very much!

He got very sniffy and informed me that in future he'd prefer me to keep the curtains open unless I'm asleep as it looks "unseemly"!

My face was ShockConfusedthen Angry

I have my upstairs curtains closed all the time. We live in a lovely Georgian house on very old, narrow street and I don't like my neighbours being able to see into my bedrooms. I prefer my privacy and don't give a shit what other people think about my curtain habits.

Wether you own or rent a property....who gives a flying fig if the curtains are open or closed....I. Would. Not. Care.

Op he shouldn't have gone into your bedroom....next time he may see something that he wishes he had not Wink

We keep ours closed all day as we live in a ground floor flat with a big pavement outside so everyone can see straight in.

Special! For the last time THERE IS A SKYLIGHT IN THE ROOF OF MY BEDROOM SO THE ROOM GETS SUNLIGHT EVEN IF THE CURTAINS ARE CLOSED!!! THERE IS NO SUNLIGHT ISSUE, REPEAT, NO SUNLIGHT ISSUE!

As for it signalling that I'm on holiday, any burglars would get a shock to find me asleep in the day after a night shift.

I didn't really say anything to the LL- I was too shocked that he'd actually been in my room. Plus he knows full well that I work shifts- I listed my job on the application, I was wearing my uniform when he came to measure for the skylight blind (that he never bought) and when he expressed surprise that I wanted one I told him I do nights around half the time- so God knows how he'll know if my curtains are closed for legitimate or unseemly reasons!

I'd hAve told the LL where to go too!
My curtains are nearly always closed too.
When it's sunny the sun is always directly shinning on my room, and when it's cold it helps to keep my room warm.
My room isn't damp nor smelly either Hmm

sorry, thread too boring to read any more of the shrieking. I did say that your landlord was in the wrong, but you've got the usual selective listening problem.

you will still get condensation. But you aren't listening.

bye.

NancyCaroline · 02/10/2015 18:00

Am I missing something here Special? Have you got manky tenants who lived in the dark and gave you damp problems? Because you seem to be the one who isn't listening.

I do not have condensation.
I do sometimes open the curtains.
I keep the window open at night.
The curtains in the living room are always open.
There is also a skylight in the bedroom which doesn't have a blind.
you are a sunlight obsessed loon

My PILs do this. I used to draw the curtains when I was BFing, and still do if the sun's getting on the telly. They walk in doing some faux-concern bullshit with over dramatic "Who's died? Who's died?" comments. They are Scottish, for the people upthread wondering if this was just an English thing. They tend to treat every visit to our house as if they're doing some kind of inspection, and like to comment as they go, it's deeply unpleasant.

rolite · 02/10/2015 22:57

Ignore him, it's not of his business.

If you're breast feeding I'd have just told them to stop being melodramatic and look around them. I think they're rude bursting in if you're breastfeeding.
I think there are times when it's appropriate to lose the curtains, but think it's weird to have them closed all the time.
I'd never heard of the closing them for deaths comment before this thread, I obviously pay more attention to items on drugs than death protocols!
