to think that if I want to keep my curtains closed all day I can!

Landlord had to pop in today with the Gas safety inspector. I happened to be at home as I'm not working today. Before leaving, he glanced down the corridor into my bedroom and said "oh, you've still got your curtains closed, I hope we've not disturbed you after a nighshift?" "No no" says I "I'm off till the weekend"

Gas man then asks what I do and we have a little chat about it. They leave.

5 minutes later, knock on the door. Gas man has left his gas detector thingy on the kitchen side. Off I toddle to get it. Find Landlord coming out of my bedroom. I ask what he's doing and he says he was opening my curtains for me as I still hadn't Shock To which I said thank you, but I prefer to keep them closed and I'd rather he didn't randomly wander into my bedroom thank you very much!

He got very sniffy and informed me that in future he'd prefer me to keep the curtains open unless I'm asleep as it looks "unseemly"!

My face was ShockConfusedthen Angry

They weren't when i was a tenant. I think they had to give notice if they wanted to inspect the property.

NancyCaroline · 01/10/2015 16:03

This is only the second time he's been in, both with my permission. Last time he was showing a surveyor round.

Did you know he was coming today? Did he give notice?

If not, that's in breach of your rights.

In future you need to refuse him access. He can send the engineer in, or whoever but he won't be accessing your home. He can only do so if he asked and you grant permission, in advance.

He can't just pitch up, he can't just stroll in and he can't use his key without permission.

Given that he has broken your trust twice now, you need to remind him of the rights you have and say that he is not to enter your home unless you say so.

Seriously, this is an amateur LL mistake.

NewLife4Me · 01/10/2015 16:19

I more often than not forget to draw our front room curtains. Sometimes I don't think to do it if I'm not using the room.
Sometimes at night I go to close them and I haven't opened them all day Grin WTF does it matter?
We live on a main road too, with lots of pedestrians going past, I couldn't care less.

kungfupannda · 01/10/2015 16:19

I almost never open the upstairs curtains. The rest of the village must think I'm unseemly. But there are four windows at the front and three of them are bedrooms which we're pretty much never in during the day.

specialsubject · 01/10/2015 16:48

landlord presumably gave notice of visit? Gas safe is an essential. Although no, he shouldn't have gone into the bedroom if no need. The 'unseemly' comment is stupid.

but curtains need to move for ventilation purposes, and to let in sunshine. If you never bother, don't whine if the property gets lots of condensation, your stuff gets damaged and your deposit takes a hit if it is a rental.

Ego, some people have no choice unfortunately.

CatEyeFlick · 01/10/2015 17:15

yanbu its your home he can fuck off

GruntledOne · 01/10/2015 17:21

If he makes a fuss about it, tell him he's in breach of his covenant of quiet enjoyment by going into your bedroom without permission, and that there's nothing in the lease requiring you to keep the curtains open.

Anyway, he's given you a let-out by accepting graciously that you're allowed to have the curtains closed when you're asleep. Just tell him you were asleep all day. Too bad if he thinks you've got narcolepsy.

He did give me notice of the gas inspection and obviously I don't mind as it's for safety purposes. However, I did NOT give permission for him to go into my bedroom!

Special as I said before I do open the curtains but often keep them closed for several reasons. There is plenty of sunlight in the room via the skylight in the roof. I have no intention of "whinging" because I am a grown adult and am perfectly capable of taking responsibility for my possessions.

What does sunlight have to do with condensation? Temperature, air humidity, air circulation yes, but sunlight?

NadiaWadia · 01/10/2015 17:40

Some landlords are just knobs, unfortunately.

KP86 · 01/10/2015 17:45

Also had a giggle to myself coming back to my building after being out with DS, wondering if neighbours think our flat is unseemly due to curtains not being open much. Haha!

Such a lot of rot.

NancyCaroline · 01/10/2015 17:46

Nadia he is a bit of a div, yes. For example when I first moved in the place absolutely stank of stale fags . No amount of cleaning or scented candles would shift it and the walls were all nasty and yellow so I asked him to have it repainted. He said he would. 5 weeks later, I'd heard nothing so I asked again and he said he couldn't find anyone to do the decorating so could I paint if myself and he'd pay for the paint Hmm

My curtains are closed as the sun fades the furniture otherwise.

Wow! I'd rather have faded furniture than live in perpetual darkness...

YANBU OP - I couldn't care less if my tenants leave their curtains closed all year round.

Solina · 01/10/2015 17:52

I open the curtains at day time and only if I am at home. I never open them when it goes dark though because we live on ground floor flat facing the road and I dont like people looking in at all. It feels uncomfortable to see people look straight at you from outside. Also they are kept shut if I am in my pyjamas Grin

Jux · 01/10/2015 17:58

Bloody cheeky sod.

We rent out our basement. It would never occur to me to wander around our tenant's flat opening curtains willy-nilly. He pays us money and as long as he does that's his home and he can do what he likes in it. As long as it's in more or less the same state when he leaves as it was when he moved in it's none of my business.

WaggleBee · 01/10/2015 18:13

He's really out of order. He's your landlord not your Dad ffs.

I often have my bedroom curtains closed most of the day. I have ME and some days I need to lie down in a darkened room for half an hour to recharge. Sometimes daylight can trigger off awful headaches and nausea.

The neighbour's don't know I'm ill so yes I guess it looks lazy and slovenly. But I don't care, the house is spotless and at some point everyday the windows get opened for at least half an hour to air the house.

Actually I think I do care a bit. I'm slightly Blush about them thinking I'm lazy and the house must be untidy when it's really not.

Libitina · 01/10/2015 18:17

I absolutely hate curtains shut in the day, but it's none of his business. He shouldn't have been in your bedroom or touched your curtains.

This. The only time my curtains are shut during the day (barring nightshifts, illness or death) is on a very hot and sunny day in the summer.

NancyCaroline · 01/10/2015 18:23

I've just had a thought- the estate agent who manage the lettings is next door. Maybe they'll be the curtain police!

OP posts:
KP86 · 01/10/2015 18:28

Who are all these people who judge others on whether their curtains get opened? Is this an English quirk? Quite seriously, I have never heard of this before.
