Landlord had to pop in today with the Gas safety inspector. I happened to be at home as I'm not working today. Before leaving, he glanced down the corridor into my bedroom and said "oh, you've still got your curtains closed, I hope we've not disturbed you after a nighshift?" "No no" says I "I'm off till the weekend"

Gas man then asks what I do and we have a little chat about it. They leave.

5 minutes later, knock on the door. Gas man has left his gas detector thingy on the kitchen side. Off I toddle to get it. Find Landlord coming out of my bedroom. I ask what he's doing and he says he was opening my curtains for me as I still hadn't Shock To which I said thank you, but I prefer to keep them closed and I'd rather he didn't randomly wander into my bedroom thank you very much!

He got very sniffy and informed me that in future he'd prefer me to keep the curtains open unless I'm asleep as it looks "unseemly"!

My face was ShockConfusedthen Angry

I hadn't either KP, it's a new one on me. If I saw closed curtains I'd assume the room needed to be dark for some reason. That's if I even gave it a second thought!

5 weeks later, I'd heard nothing so I asked again and he said he couldn't find anyone to do the decorating so could I paint if myself and he'd pay for the paint

He just sounds unprofessional in general.

NancyCaroline · 01/10/2015 18:53

merry I think he's just a bit clueless. His email signature thing lists him as a chartered surveyor so I think he does this as a sideline. He owns the whole building, which used to be 2 shops though so he must have some experience!

I'm guessing he thought his experience in the building trade was enough?

When I moved in he supplied curtains which I changed because they were gopping and far too long but no blind on the skylight. The one in the bedroom. That lets in light. He then seemed genuinely surprised when I asked him for a blind. Almost a year later I still await said blind.

Just pretend you are doing lots of night shifts and have to sleep in the day.

NancyCaroline · 01/10/2015 19:26

evil not only did I tell him that, it is actually true! He did say if I sorted it out myself he'd pay me back though Hmm

There's a house on my bus route that has tin foil over the bedroom windows.

I enjoy speculating about it. It's been there for years

HackerFucker22 · 01/10/2015 19:53

Both my living room and master bedroom have two massive windows. I only open the shutters / blinds on one....

Reason being is I bf baby on sofa which is by one window in living room (shutters protect my modesty) and one of the bedroom blinds in broken so if you open it, it falls down.

HackerFucker22 · 01/10/2015 19:54

My windows must look wonky lol

JeffsanArsehole · 01/10/2015 20:01

You know what to say next time :

"The bedroom is very overlooked so when I'm masturbating I like privacy"

Said as primly as possible

Frankly I think that's your only option

Wheretheresawill1 · 01/10/2015 20:11

Closed curtains in the day looks rough

WaggleBee · 01/10/2015 20:15

Hmm nice.

goinggrey1978 · 01/10/2015 20:22

i keep my curtains closed unless its snowing and i want to watch it or i'm cleaning the windows and washing the nets and curtains! its pointless me opening them when its dark in the morning when i go to work and dark when i get home again!

VulcanWoman · 01/10/2015 20:46

The Landlord probably found out how much the skylight blinds are, nasty expensive.

I really don't care if it looks "rough" to anyone else. My circus, my monkeys.

The only thing I can think of as a legitimate reason for wanting curtains open is due to concern over damp/condensation on windows, not that it's unsightly or anything stupid like that.

redredblue · 01/10/2015 22:12

My curtains haven't been opened since I bought them!

FretYeNotAllIsShiny · 01/10/2015 22:18

My curtains are almost always shut, partly because next doors kids kept pressing their faces against the window, partly because the sun shines on the TV no matter where it is in the room and you can't watch it, and mostly because I'm a lazy sod.

WorktoLive · 02/10/2015 06:46

The tinfoil windows person will be trying to keep out electromagnetic radiation from mobile phone transmitters or be a conspiracy theorist who doesn't want 'them' reading his thoughts.

Or else he could be growing drugs and be reflecting the heat from his growing lights.

NancyCaroline · 02/10/2015 10:56

Lots of people do it to keep the heat in cheaply. Lots of Eastern European families have the tinfoil windows rather than put the heating on.

You'll all be relieved to know I opened the bedroom curtains before I went out this morning. No unseemlyness from me, no siree!

closed curtains in the day does also signal 'on holiday, burgle me'.

open them and let the sunshine in to get some solar gain. Close again before dark. Difficult for workers once the clocks go back (Thanks for nothing, Rees-Mogg) but perfectly possible at the moment.

JapaneseSlipper · 02/10/2015 11:41

Jeff brilliant advice! Tee hee.

OP your landlord sounds like a complete twit. What did you say to him when he explained why he did it? I'm stunned!

mileend2bermondsey · 02/10/2015 11:51

closed curtains in the day does also signal 'on holiday, burgle me'
In what world? Who closes all their curtains before going on holiday Confused what a load of tosh.

YANBU at all OP. In my old house I never opened the bedroom curtains because they took loads of faffing round to get them looking 'right' when opened. Then I'd leave for work, come back and it was dark so I'd shut the curtains. Who was I wasting time faffing around for? Nosy neighbours with nowt better to do with their time but glare at 'unseemly' houses?

In my house before that I kept them closed to keep the heat in as the windows were thin as shit. Now I keep my blinds mostly shut in the bedroom as I live on the ground floor and am sick of people gawking into my room as they walk past.

There are loads of reasons why people keep their curtains closed. And most of them are not because they are unseemly people Hmm Your LL is s total dick to just walk in your bedroom and open the curtains, who the hell does he think he is??

HOWEVER; when anyone came to my house, including the LL, I would always open the curtains just so it looks nice and more presentable.

Bunbaker · 02/10/2015 13:27

Actually, that could be true, especially in summer. It would be considered unusual to keep curtains closed all the time during long daylight hours and some people might assume the house is empty.

My neighbours opposite always close their lounge curtains when they go away.
