To be surprised the lady that stabbed the paedophile got 3 and a half years?

Just that really. I thought she would get longer. The world is a better place without him but still .... She murdered him.

Well she wasn't found guilty of murder - and manslaughter sentences are not set. I only know the outlines of the case as reported, I imagine there were many details that came out in court which informed the judge's decision.

I don't understand how he worked as a council steward and volunteered with kids. What happened to DBS checks?

goawayalready · 29/09/2015 17:58

i suppose its inline with sentencing for pedophiles? my friends (now ex) husband was convicted of abusing a child over a long period he got a two year suspended sentence and some restrictions like not having children in his car/flat etc got caught again with an underage girl in his flat got another two year suspended sentence....

HermioneWeasley · 29/09/2015 18:00

She should get a medal. Sentencing for child abusers is a joke. I would execute them - they are remorseless, dangerous and unable to be rehabilitated.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/09/2015 18:01

On the one hand.... I can't find it in my heart to feel sorrow for his passing. He was a lifelong abuser and had many convictions. He had changed his name and hidden his past while (based on the report I just heard on Radio 4) trumpeting to all and sundry how much he loved children and how much voluntary work he did for the kiddies. He wore a high viz vest all the time to make himself appear to have some sort of official position. The woman who stabbed him had befriended him and then found out the truth when he was charged with further offences.

On the other hand... vigilante justice is not a good thing.

The (relatively short) sentence seems about right. Very sad case for all concerned. Sad

goawayalready · 29/09/2015 18:01

he wasn't on the sex offenders register as they were prior to it being put in place that usually means they will pass a dbs as they only go back so far

Fluffyears · 29/09/2015 18:02

Dbs checks only work if they have been previously caught.

Mehitabel6 · 29/09/2015 18:03

It should give a clear warning that you can't act as judge and take the law into your own hands.

HermioneWeasley · 29/09/2015 18:04

The sex offenders register and DBS checks don't work then. Protecting abusers instead of keeping kids safe. I mean, who would fucking object if the SOR was retrospective? I get that execution is controversial, but who would object to life behind bars with no parole for them? Who wouldn't that be a vote winner with?

m1nniedriver · 29/09/2015 18:05

Obviously he should have been in a cage in some desert island, as should anyone found guilty of these crimes against childrdn Angry ut she stabbed him to death (from what I've read) just think it sets a president. Many people would probably do 3 years for one of these b^$|*#>s, does it send out the wrong message. The justice system is often shite, I'm just not sure vigilantly justice like this is the answer Confused so does that mean any single mother who commits a crime because 'they lost control' will get sentences reduced? Just seems a little odd to me.

I'm sure there is more to it than meets the eye. Just struck me as strange

He had been previously caught and convicted Fluffy. Which is why i don't understand the DBS thing. I understand why he wasnt on sex offenders registered. I can't believe I have been paying for checks and flipping updates and it only checks the last 30 years.

HermioneWeasley · 29/09/2015 18:08

Obviously vigilantism is not the solution, but the fact this crime attracts so much vigilante action shows the strength of public feeling and our frustration that the justice system doesn't protect children

ilovechristmas123 · 29/09/2015 18:10

was also gonna say she should get a medal but see someone has said that already

BrandNewAndImproved · 29/09/2015 18:12

Did he perhaps do something to her child but as he's dead and he can't be tried for it they haven't put that info out there.

littleducks · 29/09/2015 18:12

The dbs website states it checks for convictions so these should have shown up. Perhaps he wasn't checked but if he was the system obv didn't work

HopefulAnxiety · 29/09/2015 18:13

Hermione how is lifelong prison with no parole even similar to execution? The death penalty has no place in a civilised society. I would be fine with lifelong prison with no parole, since it does give a chance for some rehabilitation.

Are you an expert on the psychology of paedophiles? Do you have any peer-reviewed research on it? How do you know they can't be rehabilitated?

Obviously child abuse is appalling and inexcusable. However that doesn't give vigilantes or the state the right to become murderers.

EponasWildDaughter · 29/09/2015 18:14

Three and a half is enough to be a smack on the wrist but lenient enough to reflect the circs.

Hopefully she'll get out earlier with good behavior.

HopefulAnxiety · 29/09/2015 18:15

Also that's a good point about him not being able to be tried now. The point of the law is that everyone gets a trial.

NickNackNooToYou · 29/09/2015 18:16

I'm struggling with this - two wrongs don't make a right but what he did was so far beyond wrong. I can see why she was sentenced with loss of control.

Something very similar very nearly happened in my family fortunately 'the lovely kind man' --aka paedophile was caught before anything happened to my DCs. If anything had happened I may well be in the same position as this lady. It's seriously scary stuff Sad

AndNowItsSeven · 29/09/2015 18:20

She was not a vigalante though, she lost control

They hinted on the radio news earlier that something in her background (which they could not reveal) was a mitigating factor.
