To give my pet a human name

Hi I have a hamster, I just got him. I have given him a human name like Kevin but not. My SIL thinks its 1stly weird I have a hamster (I'm in my thirties) and 2ndly given him a human name.

SIL isn't pregnant but says I have taken a name way from her. She doesn't like Kevin but now I've used it she can never use it Hmm

Apparently this is a common rule for names, I should have known this. I should have waited until I knew her baby names before choosing to use a name for anything other than a baby.

Aibu to have not known this was a thing and to have laughed.

We have had 3 hens:
Matilda
Mary
Ellen
I say had because Matilda died today. (Old age.) Sad day.

When I was growing up our dog was Sam.

Oh, and YADNBU. Your SIL sounds positively odd to even give it any thought.

"The top 10 pet names bore a striking resemblance to the top 10 baby names."
I've noticed that names often get ridiculously popular for pets about a year or two before they get ridiculously popular for babies.

My daughter's best friend has a hamster named Harold. Which was my uncle's name, but is a much better name for a hamster.
Years ago, we had a cat named after my great uncle - it was a very unusual name, one I've never personally heard of anybody else having, and obviously not coincidental - his son was a bit put out at first, but said once he got to know the cat he thought it suited him. My mum now has 3 cats; Mandy, Celeste, and George - all female.

Guinea pig, not hamster. What was I thinking? Blush

weebairn · 01/10/2015 07:41

My cat is called Richard Hawley. We met the real Richard Hawley in a pub once and told him.

TheFairyCaravan · 01/10/2015 08:03

My hamster is called Neville. The one before that was called Rupert and before that it was Basil.

Apparently, according to DS1, the next one is being called Keith, but I like Edward.

JoffreyBaratheon · 01/10/2015 10:21

My cat is called Helen.

Helen is actually a brilliant name for a cat.

I looked after a cat called Anthony for a whole, personally I didn't think it suited him, gavin would have done him better.

HaydeeofMonteCristo · 01/10/2015 23:05

Our guinea pigs have human names. One is quite a popular girls name as it turns out.

I used to want a cat called Don John the Bastard though.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 01/10/2015 23:53

I had a cat who had a human name that has become popular again, obviously she led the way for this

She certainly did not think she was human she knew humans were beneath her
