To give my pet a human name

Hi I have a hamster, I just got him. I have given him a human name like Kevin but not. My SIL thinks its 1stly weird I have a hamster (I'm in my thirties) and 2ndly given him a human name.

SIL isn't pregnant but says I have taken a name way from her. She doesn't like Kevin but now I've used it she can never use it

Apparently this is a common rule for names, I should have known this. I should have waited until I knew her baby names before choosing to use a name for anything other than a baby.

Aibu to have not known this was a thing and to have laughed.

My cat is called George.

I was at school with someone who gave her dog a girl's name, and when she had a baby many years later, she called her daughter the same name. I never dared ask her if it was because she'd loved her dog so much, or if it was the name itself that she loved more than any other. It only struck me as odd for a minute or two, as it was a perfectly good name.

SIL is an arsehole of the most entertaining variety. Well done, and love to 'Kevin'.

Pipbin no she hates the name and wouldn't name her future son it. I did ask to check. My MIL was upset my DB called his son after her childhood dog.

My sister also had a cat called Brian, he used to swear a lot, his swear word of choice was 'murt' which he would mutter under his breath if annoyed.

Most of our pets have had 'human' names, - I once had 3 gerbils all called Keith (they all looked the same)

And surely everyone knows that chicken have to have old lady name, ditto nanny goats.

I have a guinea pig called Linda :)

He lives in a 6ft converted glass cabinet in the living room. He is going to be so spoiled. Luckily I'm off work tomorrow for the monster Amazon order.

SIL is quite odd she cried when we got the same car but different colour to her. DH is currently driving her home. No doubt she'll be telling MIL.

I have always used human names for pets- ignore her.

Friend's cat was called Malcolm. Our gerbils are Sheldon, Tyrone, Yuki & Gerry. My car is called Susan!

Our rabbits are named Steve and Thor (one's a girl, no idea which). DH had to register them at the insurers and the vet with those names. We also have a cat named Timothy, and another named Fake Timothy (the DCs named him). Frankly, nobody should ever pay attention to animal's names; they're contractually obliged to be ridiculous.

I also wanted to name a dd after a pet. so what. call your pets whatever you want.

Had horses named ivor and max and we also have a parrot called frank :-)

We had a girl cat named Steve. There have also been pets named Spencer, Becky, Thomas, Nero, Spsrtacus, Bill, Ben, Imelda, Ferdinand, and Roger.

We currently have a Dorcas and Breena.

We are next door to a cat called Rupert and the other side have a cat called Patrick. If I had a cat I would call it Ethel or Wilfred.
