To give my pet a human name

Iliketoparrty · 28/09/2015 21:56

Hi I have a hamster, I just got him. I have given him a human name like Kevin but not. My SIL thinks its 1stly weird I have a hamster (I'm in my thirties) and 2ndly given him a human name.

SIL isn't pregnant but says I have taken a name way from her. She doesn't like Kevin but now I've used it she can never use it Hmm

Apparently this is a common rule for names, I should have known this. I should have waited until I knew her baby names before choosing to use a name for anything other than a baby.

Aibu to have not known this was a thing and to have laughed.

We have had various hamsters called:
Vlad and Fat Myshkin (Russian Dwarf), Dean and Dave (also Russian Dwarf), Chris (Robrovski Dwarf), Beast (Syrian) because she was HUGE although her original name was Olivia and my favourite of all, Steve (Syrian).
We have a cat called Oliver. I would love two guinea pigs and would call them Jackie and Maxine.

helenahandbag · 29/09/2015 12:11

My dog is called Archie and I had a hamster called George. Hamster before him was Percy.

Pets with human names are brilliant. My dad knew someone with a dog called Tam Grin

Bearsinmotion · 29/09/2015 12:12

I had a rat called Steve and guinea pigs called Neville and Winston. Kevin is a great name for a hamster. Baby human, not so much!

MyNameIsRonnieFuckingPickering · 29/09/2015 12:13

No more pets called Dave!

Bearsinmotion · 29/09/2015 12:22

DD has suggested Dave for her (female!) guinea pig, because it is Daddy's "other name"!

hellsbellsmelons · 29/09/2015 12:26

I've had a Harry the Hamster
A Mickey the Mouse
Charlie the Cat
Darcy the Dog
Many rabbits over the years although most had 'pet' names apart from the last one who was Annabella

Please do as a PP says and get another one and name it after her - brilliant!
Your SIL needs a grip!

FattyNinjaOwl · 29/09/2015 12:27

We had a female python named Damian.

Fabellini · 29/09/2015 12:32

Our dog is called Basil......I'd agree it's a human name, but I've never met anyone who's even considered it for their dc!
But they can't now mwahahaha

Notso · 29/09/2015 12:35

YABU I hate it when I mention my DCs names and someone proudly announces they have a pet called the same thing.
It makes me feel like I've called my kids Rover or Fluffy.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 29/09/2015 12:37

I think she's having a hormonal moment Wink I used to have a hamster called Seren, which means Star in Welsh. It's not strictly just a human name but it is used as a girl's name sometimes. Incidentally, I know you're not using it but my dad's name is Kevin and I think it's an excellent name for a hamster Grin

I have a cat called Mia and used to have one called Sue. I know dogs called Sam, Ben and Lilly.

One of my horses is called Sianco, which is a rarely-used-these-days Welsh name. To name a few I know or have known horses called George, Billy, Sebastian, Millie, Rupert, Reuben, Jessica, Joe, Tom, Rachel (named that one myself), Mickey, Sylvester and Charlie (loads of these actually) The only one that made me Hmm was one called Chris, which I found hilarious

Buttercup27 · 29/09/2015 12:38

My guinea pigs are Trevor and stan and their predecessors were Fred and George.

MrsKoala · 29/09/2015 12:52

Michael Barrimore's Jack Russell is called Dave and tries to eat bread i throw to the ducks and i think we can all agree that MB is the absolute epitome of normality.

I actually have a dogs name (listed above) and regularly hear my name being called, Barbara Woodhouse stylee across the park (i nearly posted Barbara Windsor then, but that would just be very wrong, now if it was Sid James...).

I once met a woman with the same name as my dog (Tara) and she said i'm a bit embarrassed as you have the same name as my dog, and i replied, 'that's funny because you have the same name as my dog too'. Grin

Kerantli · 29/09/2015 12:59

Dogs I know;

Tara
Alfie
Poppy
Harvey (x2, worlds apart in looks - ones a Lhaso Apso, the other is a mix breed)
Bentley
Rosie

Cats I know;

Misty
Skylar
Sirius
Bob
Alice
Maisie
Jacob

It always amuses me when people get up in arms over pet names, if the pet suits a "human" name over a "pet" name, then so be it wishes she could have called Flick the cat something else, but Flick was already named Flick and wouldn't answer any other name other than "daft cat"

kali110 · 29/09/2015 13:01

Name it what you want. Your pet you decide.
My pets are part of my family.
My rabbit has a very traditional name. Grin

jorahmormont · 29/09/2015 13:02

Your SIL is being a twat. We've adopted a hamster called Annie :)

Gottagetmoving · 29/09/2015 13:06

There is no such thing as human names. There are just names. You can call your cat Henry or you can call your son Tiddles if you want.
There are names I think are stupid but what other people call their pet or child is none of my business.

Gottagetmoving · 29/09/2015 13:07

My DS's friend got a dog and called it after my ex husband. He wasnt pleased.

Nooka Foalan is a common Scottish Gaelic name from the island my DH is from. DH had 3 in his school.

SIL texted this morning, she has agreed we can use the name as her DH doesn't like it. He thinks non Anglican names are racist. Shock

DH and I both have non Anglican names as does SIL.

They sound madder than a box of frogs. Ask what names they are considering. Then buy an ant farm and use them Smile

Iliketoparrty · 29/09/2015 13:14

In our family using a non Gaelic name would be a bit Hmm. My teachers used to crack up when they saw my name as it isn't pronounced anything like its spelt.

Of course YANBU!

Som of my favourite pet name from over the years: frank, Barry, Benjamin, Lucy, Timmy.

MaidOfStars · 29/09/2015 13:27

Animals with human names are the best. Especially stereotypically boring human names.

Our last hamster was called Julian.

Hersetta427 · 29/09/2015 13:33

YANBU - our guinea pigs are Dave, George, Percy and Jack.

MyNameIsRonnieFuckingPickering · 29/09/2015 13:34

That's it. I'm banning the use of Dave. TOO many Dave pets.
