(Or rather WIBU as I haven't done it yet)

Salient points:

DD is 10
She doesn't have a phone.
She has an Instagram account on my phone with her classmates plus a few others on it - she doesn't have that many 'followers'
She suffered some low level bullying last year.
She cares very much what her friends think of her.

DD is out for the day with a friend, I won't see her until tomorrow. It was an off the cuff trip suggested by friends mum.

The notifications on DDs Instagram have been going bonkers this morning. I've finally stopped and looked. Another friend has DM'd her a number of times, getting upset that DD hasn't replied and asking if she's ignoring her. She's then taken to Instagram 'proper' and has posted lots of 'woe is me, she calls herself a friend and then blanks me, I hate my life/have no friends' posts that everyone can see.

She's aimed them at DD and they have got progressively nastier.

DDs other friends have posted and have now joined in with the 'how horrible of her' stuff.

WIBU to post on there "Hi this is DDs mum and I can see all your messages. DD is out for the day and doesn't have a phone or access to Instagram. She isn't ignoring you and you are being a drama queen over nothing once again

Because I don't think DD is will like me getting involved, but I know she's going to be gutted when she sees all this Sad

It is good that she has made another friend through it.

But this really shows what a load of bollocks it is in the hands of 10yr olds!

I mean bar the one new friend, is it really serving any useful purpose?

Your are right queen arnica but sometimes it's better to have a shared account than have a child set up an account while at a friends house that you know nothing about.

More than one new friend diddl. DD is a lovely kid (of course I'd say that) but she is quite 'insular' with her friends. Thanks in a big part to Instagram she is now friendly with and playing with the rest of the kids in her class - girls and boys. She has also gone back to playing with the 'village green' kids who she'd seen less and less of when concentrating on the 4 friends who turned on her in June and July. So whilst I still think it's mainly nonsense and just a loads of young kids posting "aww beautiful Hun" "tag the friends you'd take a bullet for" and "follow X he's the coolest" it has opened DDs eyes to all the other great kids around her and stopped the 4 being her only aim.

Jessica "rate me" is a kid posting a photo (usually a duck face) and her friends giving her 'hotness' marks out of 10. DD doesn't do it (or the duck face) thank God. If she did she'd be off there in a shot.

Is it possible the other girl thought she was being ignored by your dd and was upset by it, and then acted like an idiotic 10yr old?
I am glad you have it sorted but these problems will come up with kids and it's not always easy for us to sort it out as we didn't have social media at their age.

FindoGask · 26/09/2015 22:55

I'm another one reading this who is boggling at 10 year olds with Instagram accounts! what the fuck? My eldest is 8 and I feel like she's years off that stuff yet. Are you even legally allowed to have an account at that age?

carbolicsoaprocked · 26/09/2015 23:09

Yep, do it. Maybe knowing 'MrsDallas' can see what they post might make them think about what they post in future too.

Instagram has caused no end of trouble in my 10 year old daughter's class. Loads of bullying going on. We've had a few letters home and they've had assemblies about it. I think it's fine if used like the OP uses it with heavy supervision but the kids in my daughter's class aren't supervised at all unfortunately. For that reason I've not let DD on it, she's quite quiet too and only has a few friends but I really don't think letting her loose on instagram would help. I think she'd get eaten alive to be honest.
