To dislike "Radical Feminism"

InternetPerson · 25/09/2015 21:15

I've got nothing against feminists that fight for womens rights and genuinely want the best the best for everyone and don't hate anyone, but "RadFems" tend to be full of bitterness and hatred. And I'm not just talking about kids, these are high profile, intelligent women with power and influence. Do you think it's unreasonable to dislike something where most people think men are inherantly evil and to be feared? Or do you think their hatred is fair and we should respect them for their good work in trying to make humans hate eath other even more?

Like, I said, I have nothing against Feminism, it's done a lot of great work down the years and still does, but "Rad Fem" and "Feminism" are too completly different things in my opinion. Is this a wrong conclusion?

Autumn what aspects of radical feminism do you disagree with?

Autumnnights1 · 27/09/2015 15:41

The "radical" just gets my back up.

It sounds like some sort of cult or group I should be in.

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2015 15:42

So you just object to the name don't know what it is about? Confused

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2015 15:42

... but don't know what it is about?

AnyFucker · 27/09/2015 15:42

Maybe you should get over it ?

I don't like the sound of the word "toe"

It irritates me and icks me out, but I accept that people have toes and sometimes would like to mention their toes.

Autumnnights1 · 27/09/2015 15:47

apologies, i sent the last message whilst distracted by other things.

I don't want to be part of an "elite" set.

A high proportion of the "Radfem" topic group writers are the most passive aggressive people on here.

Autumnnights1 · 27/09/2015 15:48

My point has just been confirmed.

SmugairleRoin · 27/09/2015 15:48

Can't speak for Autumn, but I know I and many others disagree with radical feminist views on sex work/porn etc (from what I have read they're generally not in favour) and their views on transgender women.

So, I can happily say radical feminism is not for me. I've also found when discussing feminism that the radicals tend to instinctively react with sarcasm or hostility, which puts me and others off too. But the reasons I mentioned above definitely are much more important to me.

FinglesMcStingles · 27/09/2015 16:00

Not sure AF was being passive aggressive there. She's making a reasonable point in a fairly mild mannered way. Autumn, you're saying you don't like radical feminism because of the associations the word 'radical' has for you. Those associations are in your head, not an inherent part of any branch of feminism (with the possible exception of caricatures of feminism). Fair enough that those associations in your head put you off, but I don't think that's sufficient justification for getting rid of the word 'radical'. You can rename it whatever you want, it'll still be the same flavour of feminism.

FloraFox · 27/09/2015 16:00

Radfems are not an elite group. It's not like the SAS of feminism, it's just a set of beliefs and the activism around those beliefs.

I don't think there is still a RadFem board.

Autumnnights1 · 27/09/2015 16:00

what on earth have toes got to do with it Confused

AnyFucker · 27/09/2015 16:00

You don't have a cogent point, Autumn, that is my point.

AnyFucker · 27/09/2015 16:01

What on earth does wilfully misunderstading the word "radical" have to do with it ?

Autumnnights1 · 27/09/2015 16:05

whats a "branch of feminism"? why is it supposedly in "my head"?

My point is anything "radical" means the the person who supports this is no longer rational. The person no longer has balance.

Autumnnights1 · 27/09/2015 16:06

Why are you thinking you're superior AF? thats how you're coming across.

Autumnnights1 · 27/09/2015 16:07

do i have to have a "cogent" point?

FloraFox · 27/09/2015 16:09

She the radicals who got us the vote, those who ended slavery were not rational?

FloraFox · 27/09/2015 16:10

So not she

Autumnnights1 · 27/09/2015 16:10

is "cogent" a normal every day word? no it isnt of course. Its a word people probably use when they're trying to get one up on someone.

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2015 16:13

"My point is anything "radical" means the the person who supports this is no longer rational. The person no longer has balance."

But that is not what the word 'radical' means [puzzled]

I think there have been points in history when there were deliberate conspiracies to disadvantage women, for example when women were fired from jobs en masse after the war, when various oppressive laws were passed.

Organized efforts to disadvantage women are actually part of the political agenda of the Republican Party in the US. Right now there is a very real danger that the government may be shut down over the issue of funding Planned Parenthood. And recently, they held up reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act for an extended period of time.

Autumnnights1 · 27/09/2015 16:15

Ended slavery, got the vote. Grin I know lots of women did fantastic work. People sometimes run away with their "victory" and think they are "Elite". To them, I'd say get off the pulpit and be real.
