The price of black whole peppercorns is outrageous

2.49 for 35g in a normal jar. Or for 50p more the same with a grinder. Big bulk and cheap bags of pre ground, but I don't like that (dust).

The big supermarkets are such con artists.

Get thee down the poundshop

Do you know the process to produce peppercorns? It is really labour intensive!

But do you have an asian supermarket near you? You can buy bags of them for the same price as the small jars in the supermarket.

BumWad · 25/09/2015 12:56

Go yourself to an Asian supermarket.

I got a 500g bag in Asda (world foods section) for under £2.

bruffin · 25/09/2015 13:10

Tiger are good for spices as well. Large bags for a £1, but even Ocado are lot cheaper than your OP £1.89 for a 100gm

MackerelOfFact · 25/09/2015 13:17

You can get two of the ones with the built-in grinders for £1.50 from B&M. There are loads of different types.

I get through one in about 2 weeks. I like pepper.

You're obviously shopping in the wrong place.

^^ This

Are you looking at the Schwartz type jars? Yes, they’re really expensive and there’s usually a much cheaper way to buy anything like that, as has been suggested on this thread.

For your own sake, don’t look at the price of saffron Grin.

DiamondoInTheSky · 25/09/2015 14:02

Asda do a big bag for a couple of quid.

hellsbellsmelons · 25/09/2015 16:08

Asian section of your supermarket - that's the place for all your spices.
No fancy packaging but far far cheaper than in the condiments section.

greenhill · 25/09/2015 16:23

worktolive don't forget you can grow your own saffron. In spring go around your crocus flowers with a small pair of scissors, cut out the stamen and dry in your airing cupboard. Voila saffron strands.

^ most poncetastic mc thread tip ever Grin

99p shop every time (and large jars of Hellmans mayo for 99p in there too at present).

dodobookends · 25/09/2015 17:20

I once bought a big bag of black peppercorns in an Asian supermarket - which lasted me the best part of 20 years.
