Starting a message/post/text/thread/email with the word so...

PegsPigs · 24/09/2015 20:25

It's becoming a real arrrgh thing for me! The number of posters who start their thread with 'So I've got...' or 'So my DH...' or whatever. I see it in MN, I see it on FB. It drives me nuts!

So (ha!) AIBU to get annoyed when I read threads starting with so?

Oysterbabe · 24/09/2015 20:31

Yes yabu.

wigglesrock · 24/09/2015 20:48

I don't know if YABU or not, if you don't like it you don't like it. But I use so all the time at the beginning of a sentence in my normal speech, I usually throw a couple of you knows in as well. I tend to type as I speak especially on something as informal as MN or FB.

InimitableJeeves · 24/09/2015 21:17

YANBU. What does it add putting "So" at the beginning other than four totally unnecessary key strokes?

triathlon · 24/09/2015 21:18

YANBU. Is it a copycat thing? I don't use FB so don't see it anywhere else.

Cynara · 24/09/2015 21:18

Yanbu. I've stopped reading the ones that start with "So..." because I know I won't be able to take in what they're about; I'll just be reflecting on how much I dislike the "so" at the start.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 24/09/2015 21:20

YADNBU. It grates on me as well. (Not that I'm a paragon of virtue where impeccable grammar is concerned)

PegsPigs · 24/09/2015 21:23

Cynara that's how it's got with me! I can't read and remember because the 'so' is grating on me.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 24/09/2015 21:26

So so about so? So what. Am I a so and so as I use so sometimes? So what if I do, so there SmileWink

bigsnugglebunny · 24/09/2015 21:26

So yeah, yabu Grin

PegsPigs · 24/09/2015 21:29

So...couldn't read it, wouldn't read it Wink

OP posts:
RealityCheque · 24/09/2015 21:32

Yanbu. It's annoying. And daft.

Paperthin · 24/09/2015 23:03

Oh YANBU at all! So glad you started this thread *PegsPigs because I thought it was just me! It really annoys me too. Hate it when they are interviewing on TV or radio and the interviewee says "So...I was blah blah ...."

Fatmomma99 · 25/09/2015 00:15

This isn't the first thread saying this.

I think we all have personal 'no-no's' and if there's a thread containing one we often don't bother with it and move on.

So where is the problem?

WellWhoKnew · 25/09/2015 00:32

So there I was minding my own language when...there I was minding my own language.

It's a regional thing. We are so over having a universal English.

So get over it. Ships sink at sea. They so do.

.

ReRegRhonda · 25/09/2015 03:37

Yadnbu, I hate this!

WanderingTrolley1 · 25/09/2015 03:52

Yabu.

Nothing wrong with it.

BlackGirlAndRobin · 25/09/2015 03:54

So? Grin

partialderivative · 25/09/2015 04:22

It really irritates me as well. So yanbu

SorryCantBeArsed · 25/09/2015 07:35

I'm with you OP. It drives me batty when it's used to answer a question
How do you make that?
So the way I make this is....
Why?

thehypocritesoaf · 25/09/2015 07:44

It's an interesting trend.

My Dc do it at the beginning and the end of their sentences.

wowfudge · 25/09/2015 08:45

It's awful. The first I encountered it was Will.I.Am on The Voice. It's bloody irritating and unnecessary. DP was doing it - either he picked it up from colleagues or it was a thing in the city where he works. I had to pull him up on it as it was driving me crackers.

TowelsOfTheUnexpected · 25/09/2015 10:04

So, you're not keen on people starting sentences with "so"?

I'm so so about it. Wink

knickernicker · 25/09/2015 10:16

So why do people do it then?
I think it originates in American TV, maybe something a Sex in the City character says when she talks to camera.
People do it at the start of a funny story they're telling on Facebook. It's like they think their life is a sequence of warm and witty happenings and at the point of saying 'so' we are welcomed in for a short while on the great ride that is the story of their life.

notaprincessbutaqueen · 25/09/2015 10:22

I work in a call centre and silently groan everytime someone calls in and starts their sentance with 'basically...'
Yanbu.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 25/09/2015 10:31

Yabu
It's a commonly used 'attention getter', especially in spoken English. Message boards texts etc mirror real speech a lot more than formal written speech.
It might annoy you but that's your issue, not the usage itself. Smile
