Called "unprofessional" for doing the school run in PJs

Snide comment from someone else. Wtf should i wear for a professional school drop off? I do live in my PJs and love it while I'm not working. Often have two pairs a day so its not dirty. Aibu to do this?

OP posts:

I was a SAHM, Quint, and considered normal day clothes to be my work attire. Surely only a minority of SAHPs wear pjs as their normal, daytime, working attire? All the SAHPs I have ever known got dressed during the day.

Thelushinthepub · 24/09/2015 20:37

Not bothering to dress, in the real world, is a sign you're not coping with life, not that you're some kind of hilarious slummy mummy

QuintShhhhhh · 24/09/2015 20:40

It was meant tongue in cheek!

ds2 sleeps in his boxers, and gets his PJs on as soon as he wake up during the weekend. It is "lounge wear".

Icouldbesogoodforyou · 24/09/2015 20:40

It's not my experience that in 'very, very deprived areas it's standard to wear PJ'S in the playground'. It's got nothing to do with people not 'being judgemental' in those areas.

That's suggesting that wearing PJ'S is associated with poverty or deprivation - that somehow 'deprived' areas have different standards.

I know many people in these 'very, very deprived areas' that live hand to mouth and wouldn't dream of wearing PJ'S in the playground. There are no families in this country in any area that have PJ'S but don't have clothes they could wear instead.

Wearing PJ'S in the playground is not linked to poverty or deprived areas. It may possibly (v.tenuously ) be linked to a certain attitude or lifestyle but I think most people living in these communities would be horrified to think it was considered 'standard' because of living in an area with a lower socio - economic status than other areas.

Sorry, Quint. Blush

Liara · 24/09/2015 20:47

It is always so funny when these threads are on - all these people coming on to say how filthy it is to not shower in the morning.

Either they shower twice a day, they do nothing all day that will get them dirty (but somehow sleeping in a clean bed gets them filthy?) or they go to bed seriously dirty (do they wash their sheets every day?)

Everyone always thinks 'their' way is the clean way and every other one is filthy (and the things other people think are filthy which they do are of course perfectly OK and others are being silly to think otherwise).

You can't win, OP. Do what you want and screw the world. I would never go out in my PJs (well, I don't have any so that's not hard), but I would never bat an eyelid at someone who did.

When I first moved to the UK I used to think that it was the most wonderful place in the world because everyone did whatever they wanted, wore what they wanted and said what they wanted and no one cared.

Obviously MN didn't exist in those days...it has been an education (and a disappointment, I must say).

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 24/09/2015 20:49

I'm curious as to what profession one is supposed to be performing while doing the school run Confused

StealthPolarBear · 24/09/2015 20:50

I tend to find I sweat in bed. That's why I shower in the morning.

StealthPolarBear · 24/09/2015 20:50

School bus driver!

MyrtleMoaning · 24/09/2015 20:51

Well, get yourself some gym clothes then. Problem solved.

DinosaursRoar · 24/09/2015 20:51

I thought the SAHM 'uniform' was skinny jeans, long sleeved t-shirt, converse (boots if you want to ring the changes) and a floaty scarf...

StealthPolarBear · 24/09/2015 20:52

Ooh other than the floaty scarf I come quite close

Liara · 24/09/2015 20:53

I tend to find I sweat in bed. That's why I shower in the morning.

Don't you also sweat in the gym? In fact much more than in bed?

Maybe you need a lighter duvet?

Anyway, who cares when you shower. Do it whenever you want. It's the judging of the OP for not doing it when you do it that's a bit weird.

Starkswillriseagain · 24/09/2015 20:54

I love my PJs, they are on soon as I'm home but if I saw someone out and about in PJs I'd think they were lazy. Unprofessional is bizarre, it's not a job.

OP get some lounge pants, just as comfy and in fashion!

MerryMarigold · 24/09/2015 20:54

I am a professional PJ wearer. However, even I manage to get myself dressed for the school run. I really hate seeing people wearing those fluffy, fleecy ones outside (who actually wears those in bed without sweating to death?), covered in pigs, or hearts (they are generally pink/ red/ white).

StealthPolarBear · 24/09/2015 20:54

I exercise first thing, don't go to the gym. Or if I do a lot of walking through the day and gt a bit sweaty, well it's only dh and he doesn't mind

InimitableJeeves · 24/09/2015 20:54

Who needs to be professional on the school run?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/09/2015 20:55

It's just as well all the dses have left school - I couldn't fit into a pair of skinny jeans, and never have. I have been Letting Them Down, all these years. Sad

wasabipeanut · 24/09/2015 20:56

Blimey no parents at our school would dare pitch up in PJs. The head is always out in the morning and the censure from other mums would be too much,

Seriously, who would do this?

GoldPlatedShitGibbon · 24/09/2015 20:56

Do you wear pants under your PJs, OP? Or wear them like actual PJs?

goblinhat · 24/09/2015 20:58

Blimey no parents at our school would dare pitch up in PJs. The head is always out in the morning and the censure from other mums would be too much,

Same here. the head comes out every morning and chats to the parents, often the teachers too.
It doesn't set a good example, especially if the school is setting a uniform policy for the kids.

reni2 · 24/09/2015 21:00

I'm still giggling about the picture MrDeVere painted, wrinkly crotched PJs with Garfield on them, but pigs or hearts are fabulous too, Merry. I would never say they are unprofessional, might I might have a fight on my hands not to burst out laughing.

merrymouse · 24/09/2015 21:04

Rightly or wrongly wearing pj's for the school run gives the impression that you are unable to cope with normal day to day routines like getting dressed.

DinosaursRoar · 24/09/2015 21:06

Stealth - surely you have the MN scarf, even if you aren't wearing it today?! Grin

StealthPolarBear · 24/09/2015 21:08

No I'm just not a scarf person. Do I need to hand in my mn member ship badge?
