Instant Coffee. Is it an offence now?

...or I would have thought so this morning in the staff tea room. There I am, making my coffee, when in sashays a female colleague i barely know. "Oh! You're not drinking THAT are you?" she sneers, making hers with the machine that produces coffee that tastes extremely strong for me like monkey shit mixed with diesel oil.

So, my question is, is instant coffee a BAD THING now? Do you drink it? Has anyone commented on your caffiene intake preferences in this pretentious twatty way?

GrandHighWitch - yy to the Aeropress. The only downside is that being able to make an amazing cup of coffee almost as quickly as an instant is that my caffeine levels are threatening to go through the roof! Grin

I think filter/cafetiere is nicer than espresso.

Espresso might be a bit snobbier because you need more expensive kit to make it though.

Has anyone had the Cat shit coffee, any good?

NationalTrustLadyGardens · 23/09/2015 19:17

Objection your honour! I don't think all instants should be in the same category. I think the flow chart should say at the end:

Decent instant (e.g. Alta Rica, Azera, Milicano)
l
l
l
Shite instant (e.g. Mellow Birds)

Is the getting it sent to you thing above board? DH watches lots of those Customs programmes where people are getting told off and fined for bringing plants and food in.

If someone offers me tea or coffee of course i don't ask what sort of coffee it is- that would be rude. I ask for tea, which I like anyway.
I am amused when I give someone a choice, they opt for tea, then change their minds when i start making fresh coffee for me

ouryve · 23/09/2015 19:35

I don't so much hate instant coffee as instant coffee hates me. Even that instant pretending to be fresh that places like subway serve.

I'm absolutely fine with fresh coffee, though and can even drink it, so long as I don't make it so I can stand my spoon up in it, when I have grumpy guts. Something I can't do with tea.

I don't have a machine for my coffee, though. Just a cone, fitted with a valve so that it can steep for a few minutes.

elQuintoConyo · 23/09/2015 19:35

Lose friend of mine is a coffee bean nut, has one of those machines that grinds its own beans etc. We went on a picnic together, I bought a flask of coffee to complement her pear and cinnamon cake. She thought the coffee was wonderful and asked what it was supermarket brand decaff instant Grin

I can drink any kind of coffee, except Starfucks, that's minging.

Orangeanddemons · 23/09/2015 19:37

PeanutButterFiend · 23/09/2015 20:03

Nothing wrong with a cheap and cheerful instant coffee! I drink instant first thing in the morning while DD is eating throwing with impressive force her breakfast...Having said that, I am a coffee snob when it comes to high street coffee chains. Refuse to drink Costa coffee cat piss in a posh cup. Starbucks is the way for me!

MadeMan · 23/09/2015 20:12

Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

cardibach · 23/09/2015 20:15

I don't understand why people think cafetière coffee is a faff put coffee in pot. Add water. A bit later push filter thingy down. Pour. To wash, empty coffee, wash out jug.
Barely more difficult than instant!
They are two different drinks. Drink what you like.
Generally on MN I am in the minority - have a loo brush, don't wash towels every day, never had a free bar at a wedding etc., but most of my friends only have ground coffee in the house.

cardibach · 23/09/2015 20:16

Peanut - I find Starbucks really weak and bitter at the same time. I much prefer Costa, Cafe Nero or Coffee #1.

ALassUnparalleled · 23/09/2015 20:17

I wouldn't say anything if offered instant coffee -it's perfectly drinkable.

I would however refuse the civet cat coffee. Most of it is produced by caged animals in terrible conditions. So whilst I wouldn't judge anyone who buys the cheapest own brand supermarket instant I definitely would judge anyone who buys the cat coffee.
