Instant Coffee. Is it an offence now?

...or I would have thought so this morning in the staff tea room. There I am, making my coffee, when in sashays a female colleague i barely know. "Oh! You're not drinking THAT are you?" she sneers, making hers with the machine that produces coffee that tastes extremely strong for me like monkey shit mixed with diesel oil.

So, my question is, is instant coffee a BAD THING now? Do you drink it? Has anyone commented on your caffiene intake preferences in this pretentious twatty way?

I like instant coffee because I can easily make it the strength I want it (in my case quite strong). I'm also the only person in my house who likes coffee so it's hardly worth making any other kind, but I have been disappointed with cafetiere coffee in other people's houses that was so weak it was hardly worth drinking. If they used instant they could ask each person how strong they wanted theirs and everyone would be happy.

Instant coffee is a very British thing. I grew up across the pond where instant exists but nobody actually drinks it except in an extreme pinch. Filter is much more the done thing at home and at work. I'd only use instant in baking (it is very good in baking!)

I also use a one cup filter system using a porcelain filter and it makes THE best coffee. Better than my Nespresso IMO, which I only use on the rare occasion I want a cappuccino or an iced brew.

It should be a crime to call instant coffee "coffee". Angry

That said, I wouldn't do any more than a gentle ribbing if I saw a coworker make it. What they drink is their business.

How you make yourself productive at work shouldn't be looked down upon by anyone.

I just remembered that we have some in our hurricane kit (we live in Florida).

I was never a coffee snob until we bought our Nespresso pod machine around Christmas time.....but having said that I still couldn't give a damn what I drink when I'm not at home.

Now tea on the other hand I am snobby about. Some people just canni make a decent cup and some brands are pure filth Shock

Why would you even give a gentle ribbing? Confused it's still incredibly rude.

I love instant coffee not too keen on the proper stuff. I take the piss out of the coffee snobs, it's like a class divide where I work Grin

SoupDragon Because some people have a sense of humor, and don't look for slights where there are none.

Monkey533 · 24/09/2015 22:29

Emma, make a caffiere and then water it down a la americana to each person's taste. Can you imagine if we ate or drank other dehydrated foods reconstituted with water? Is tea strength an issue for you?

Hereslookingatchoo, you can get pods which almost fit a Nespresso machine from Lidl really really cheap. DH, who is a coffee snob, says it's great; he uses the strongest ones.

DH used to go far out of his way, to get his special coffee. He had to have the right beans, ground to the finest powder before his eyes. He would use one of those little pots to make it. It was filthy stuff. Leaves a massive mess of grounds too. It never occurred to him to rinse his cup out when he'd finished either, so I was always getting a sink full of the grounds when was washing up.

CrazyBoo · 25/09/2015 00:17

Gabilan that type she was going to use is particularly fragrant, probably because the office is particularly cheap in its choice of machine/pods. It is utterly awful. I know any coffee can cause horrid breath and have a good supply of mints on hand just for this reason Grin

Update!

Another encounter with lovely colleague in tearoom while quietly making my coffee:

"Oh, you're not STILL drinking that, are you?"

Why yes, yes I am.

Long pause.

"Well, I decided long ago that I didn't want a holey stomach, so...."

Then she walked out.

I just thought that was brilliant and had to be reported on Grin

She was obviously offended you didn't follow her example immediately and bin the Nescafe

Jux · 13/10/2015 12:44

Hang on hang on people!!!!!

Coffee gives you bad breath?????

I never knew that. Is it true? Neither I nor dh drink that much coffee; I have about 3 cups a week, he has about 4 a day. I've not noticed dh having bad breath after coffee, just coffe smell for a minute or so.
