Instant Coffee. Is it an offence now?

...or I would have thought so this morning in the staff tea room. There I am, making my coffee, when in sashays a female colleague i barely know. "Oh! You're not drinking THAT are you?" she sneers, making hers with the machine that produces coffee that tastes extremely strong for me like monkey shit mixed with diesel oil.

So, my question is, is instant coffee a BAD THING now? Do you drink it? Has anyone commented on your caffiene intake preferences in this pretentious twatty way?

"is it an offence now?"

It always was.

But her sneering was worse.

I love coffee but drink instant readily enough. Sometimes it's all about the speed and caffeine Grin. At home I mainly use my cafetière or my pod machine. At work a colleague or I will put a filter machines worth on in the morning when more ppeople want it, but feels a bit cheeky to put a whole pot on for me later on in the day. So I'll have instant then. And to be fair, my productivity would definitely drop in terms of time taken to prepare, given the amount I drink.

I really enjoy instant from a flask though, just for the sake of variety.

People regularly comment on my caffeine intake, but not my preferences Grin. Possibly they know it wouldn't go well if they commented before I'd had my fix. But most likely they wouldn't as they're not pretentious.

'Proper' coffee gives me horrendous Cystis (of which I am battling a bout now after daring to drink a couple of cups from our bean to cup machine at home).

So my conclusion is I just can't do it in the future, it's too painful and caffeine hates me. Id tell my colleague that quite happily and watch her squirm as I decanted some instant decaff into my cup.

scaevola · 23/09/2015 07:01

Instant coffee was always a bit naff (what's new these days is the marketing certain brands as more acceptable).

Do people who think it's ok serve powered instant tea too?

Of course there will be people who prefer instant tea to ordinary tea (can't see it myself) but it would be rude to comment on that just as much as it is to comment on choosing powered instant coffee.

Kennington · 23/09/2015 07:09

As a professional inverted snob I will drink instant flagrantly.
I have the same colleagues as you OP.
But they are also horrified as I have been seen in tesco.
I like both instant and ground coffee but see them as different drinks.
It is the pods that drive me up the wall though. Not sure why but they seem unnecessary.

I am a coffee lover (though I drink mochas more than pure coffee) and I find instant shit but I certainly wouldn't judge. I tend to decline hot drinks if I am visiting someone as I am fussy when it comes to coffee.

A colleague a few years ago judged me on how much I go to Starbucks or on barista made coffee (about x2 day) to be fair I do waste an awful lot of money on coffee.

Quite a few people are gobsmacked when I say I don't drink tea, can't stand the stuff and have never understood the British obsession with drinking copious amount of tea every day.

Mehitabel6 · 23/09/2015 07:17

I have given up drinking instant and if I think someone is going to make it I choose to have tea instead.

LaurieMarlow · 23/09/2015 07:19

Your colleague sounds like a twat. BUT instant coffee is absolutely vile. If I was in someone house and suspected they would serve up instant, I'd opt for tea. And would be a little shocked they were serving up instant in this day and age

MaxieMouse · 23/09/2015 07:23

I drink instant very occasionally as a hot drink with lots of milk, in the same way I would drink hot chocolate. But I wouldn't call it coffee, I'm very picky about my coffee.

KERALA1 · 23/09/2015 07:24

Instant coffee tastes like gravy. I wouldn't bother if that on offer. She was rude to sy it but was right imo

CrazyBoo · 23/09/2015 07:25

Rainuntilseptember I love that, making percolator noises in the kitchen and serving up "real coffee"! Wonder if they'd know the difference. Grin

Clearly lacking in manners for all her airs and graces, ignore her.

I prefer instant coffee and sadly probably have no appreciative tastebuds left after years of nursing and drinking whatever passed as coffee on hospital wards!

Fresh coffee is always too strong for me, and I couldn't drink espresso to save my life.

Pranmasghost · 23/09/2015 07:39

I like instant if I can't have a strongish latte. Millicano instant is quite nice. Actually I prefer tea every time.

MrsTedCrilly · 23/09/2015 07:43

Most people I know drink instant.. MN is like another world sometimes. I tried the stuff you use with a cafetiere and it tasted so strong, was a farce to make and clean up after. I would love to try one from someones machine though and see what all the fuss is about. I'd be scared to in case I can't go back to instant, up North our kettle is like a member of the family! Grin

Mrsjayy · 23/09/2015 07:48

I got dh a fancy pant coffee machine its gathering dust and he is back on instant im not keen on real coffee nescaffe Grin. People who dramaticaly waft about stuff are a pain in the neck

suchafuss · 23/09/2015 07:50

I drink instant because I prefer it.

Mrsjayy · 23/09/2015 07:51

We were on holiday in florida i got an expresso from this peurto rician (sp) cafe i jittered the who day soo much caffine

AlisonWunderland · 23/09/2015 07:53

I miss being able to go into a cafe and get an instant coffee instantly.
All these fancy machines are so slow!

(prepares to be shunned by the coffee snobs)

Moodyblue1 · 23/09/2015 07:56

Can someone tell me how to make a decent coffee, do I need a machine? I have a cafetière but I don't think I ever get it quite right, I do love a real coffee though can drink instant depending on the brand, some give me headaches.

Mrsjayy · 23/09/2015 08:00

Yeah get up in the morning wait for the machine to do its gurgle isnt for me kettle on coffee made.

I'm just making my large flask (fancy coffee beaker) of real coffee to take to work with me. We either have cheap instant or a machine that dispensers something that smells like coffee but tastes revolting and I nee my caffeine fix.

I also have in my desk drawer a cup of decent instant which I will happily drink.

I never voice aloud my thoughts on other drinking habits, however bizarre they are.

Oh and my DM can't understand why she can't have a cup of instant when she pops round, I did try keeping a jar in just for her but it just goes off and she is happy to drink tea anyway.

PlayingSolitaire · 23/09/2015 08:07

I like instant coffee. And machine coffee. However, I am more often disappointed with machine coffee as it can taste like dishwater and I am never convinced the machines have been cleaned properly. It all strikes me as snobbery when people have the pod machines in their houses. They all go on about how the coffee is so wonderful, but often it is not.

I like tea. From tea bags and I don't sneer at tea granules either.

My favourite is tea in a teapot though- that is the best, most comforting and most refreshing hot drink.

PlayingSolitaire · 23/09/2015 08:09

People in the USA are surprised at the use of a kettle to boil water?! Shock
