Was this really rude?

Lets start at the very beginning...

I had 3 rescue kittens. Last summer one went missing (I live pretty rurally) and I distributed posters, checked gardens etc but she never came back Sad

Fast forward a year, another one was missing for 10 days. I of course did the same thing, searched and searched, turns out she had got herself wedged inside a dry stone wall! She's fine, thank god.

Anyway, as I was on my search mission for Martha (the second cat) one of my neighbours was asking me about her as I put the poster up. His wife then piped up with "didn't you lose one last year?" So I said very sadly yes, I was heartbroken. She then said "I hope you aren't as careless with your men" Hmm

I let it go, although I was confused! Thought she must be trying to be funny. After I found the cat I bumped into this woman again, thanked her for looking out for the cat and told her what had happened...her leaving comment was "Let's hope you aren't as careless this time, try not to lose her again"

My cats are my furry babies, they are utterly spoilt and I do everything I can to ensure they are safe and healthy whilst still having an enjoyable cat life!

AIBU to be offended by her insinuation that my 'carelessness' is to blame for my poor cat that never returned?!

Ignore the silly bitch. Like it's your fault if your cats go wandering off, what does she expect you to do, keep them trapped inside the whole time? Or tied to a stake in the garden?

TheoriginalLEM · 20/09/2015 15:31

woman sounds vile just console yourself you are not her

Cornettoninja · 20/09/2015 15:40

Ignore her, she's a dick.

Cats get themselves into scrapes and wander, it's what they do. Our job as owners is to worry ourselves sick, go tramping around looking for them and dole out the food and chin scratches when they reappear.

sproketmx · 20/09/2015 15:46

I wouldn't be offended no, wouldn't take a no notice either. Some people open their gob n what comes out is brown. One of my neighbours asked me if he'd left me yet - meaning current hubby- when I was pregnant. I told her to fuck off and mind her own business but I can't say I was offended. Didn't put me up nor down because she has zero impact on my life really.

NHKX2 · 20/09/2015 16:14

She's an ignorant twat. I'd be annoyed at her pinheaded comments, but you can't do much about it.

KurriKurri · 20/09/2015 16:24

She sounds like a miserable bat.
Tell her not to be so careless when she opens her mouth because the last two times she's done it shit has come out.

HarrietSchulenberg · 20/09/2015 16:26

I wouldn't be offended but I'd make a mental note that the woman is ever so slightly bonkers.

miaowroar · 20/09/2015 16:33

Just retort with and I hope you're not as rude next time. Try not to insult me gratuitously again. Have a nice day. Wink

Sighing · 20/09/2015 16:41

I wonder if she's quite anti pet? Of the opinion of course cats will get into situations if they are given freedom to roam? I've heard the opinion a few times that cats are not cared for if they're left to wander.

I'm glad I'm not being overly sensitive! If I wasn't as shocked I would've loved to have asked her what she meant by it. Cats wander, if they are shut inside they can't lead a happy life imo. I was already feeling upset about my poor missing kitties without her telling me it was my fault!

Sproket your neighbour sounds incredibly rude! I don't think I would've know what to say! Zzzzz your poor DD and poor cat, what are some people thinking?

MrsTedCrilly · 21/09/2015 09:24

She sounds unhinged! The man comment was just weird.. Ignore ignore ignore Smile

MrsTedCrilly · 21/09/2015 09:25

Just seen your comment about inside cats not leading a happy life though, you're BU for that.

poocatcherchampion · 21/09/2015 09:26

I'd have thought that was a joke??

BerylStreep · 21/09/2015 09:28

Does she think she is Lady Bracknell or something?

I really like KurriKurri's response.

BerylStreep · 21/09/2015 09:31

Lady Bracknell: To lose one parent kitten, Mr. Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune. To lose both looks like carelessness.

What you need is a cutting Oscar Wilde quote to retort back to her.

People really do have far too much to say. Take no notice of her. Cats are always wondering off. Glad you found Martha safe and well gorgeous name for a cat, btw. It stands out a million miles. How much you love your furbabies and how well they're looked after.

Gruntfuttock · 21/09/2015 11:43

sproketmx "One of my neighbours asked me if he'd left me yet - meaning current hubby- when I was pregnant."

WTF? Why on earth would anyone think such a thing, let alone say it? Confused

ludog · 22/09/2015 12:43

My youngest dd had a habit of stripping off and running around the street with me in hot pursuit...on one occasion my neighbour called out "like mother, like daughter ". I just turned to him and said "so when was the last time you saw me running around naked?"Hmm

sproketmx · 22/09/2015 14:53

Haha. My neighbour is an old crow. She disapproves of my lifestyle. I'm not with my first husband although he lives like 4 streets away and we get on but he left when I was pregnant, hence the comment. Wasn't till I got in the house I realised I should have told her 'yes and I'm replacing him with a Billy goat in the garden' because that would have annoyed her more

Jolyn1 · 22/09/2015 14:57

People are stupid Smile Ignore her. Sometimes they are not aware how rude they are, so I point it out, if I am in the mood. They always start to behave respectfully and nicer, I guess it's just a face and gossip about me horribly behind my back then.
ludog- that's funny:))

Fratelli · 22/09/2015 20:13

Meh - she probably did think she was being funny. Ignore and move on
