To think some people are going to regret some of these ridiculous tattoos.

What is it with tattoos lately. They're just getting ridiculous and some of them look plain stupid. Rita Ora has some just under her armpits, the part of the arm that gets dangly as you age. Just what is the point, they don't look good at all. I don't think they define you as a person (as lots of them say) at all. How does it. Confused

I don't have any tattoos, and can't see myself ever getting one. Though if I did, I know exactly what I'd get, and that has never changed. Maybe when I'm 50...

However, I do suspect that the people who choose fashion tattoos - as opposed to some of the meaningful, personal ones described on here - possibly might regret them.

Celtic/tribal arm bands, and arse antlers being the main ones. They do look dreadfully dated and band-wagony, as opposed to some of the amazing, personal tattoos you see on some people.

They say that under every tattoo is a person who has had problems, a difficult upbringing and so on; similar to those who mutilate themselves with all those piercings. Someone on another thread said they therefore felt sorry for anyone they say with a tattoo etc for this reason and I have to say I agree. Sad

ShinesLikeGold · 14/09/2015 01:47

*they saw, not say

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 14/09/2015 01:57

I have loads, including the semi-colon (not long been through a long spell of depression).

Don't generally care what others think.

When I'm old I'll worry about arthritis, losing my teeth, chin hairs, incontinence, dementia and my declining eyesight.

The drawings on my skin? Not so much.

Really? What a weird thing for "them" to say. People with tattoos aren't a homogenous group. They're old, young, rich, poor, with full sleeves or just a tiny symbol. It's downright daft to think you can point at someone and say "this is the life you've had" because of some ink on their skin.

CaoNiMao · 14/09/2015 03:06

I have most of my back tattooed, all the way down to my buttocks.

When I had the last part done recently, my friend said "What will you do when you're old, and you have a tattooed arse?"

Good question. I guess I'll whip it out and say "Hey, younger people. Look at my tattooed arse."

I LOVE that Buzzfeed link. They all looked fantastic. Certainly should silence the "it will go saggy" brigade. That "forever 18" one was just beautiful.

I don't think I would get a tattoo but I love looking at them, especially those really artistic, intricate beautiful colourful ones where the tattooist is obviously a true artist.

chrome100 · 14/09/2015 07:13

One of my friends is covered in tattoos. He puts no thought into what he gets, he just goes and gets something completely random whenever he gets bored.

I kind of admire this. It shows a refreshing disregard for his body and for notions of "beauty". In a world where we strive for unreachable levels of physical perfection, I like that he gets a unicorn with a javelin through its neck (this last tattoo) "just because".

Bunbaker · 14/09/2015 07:18

I couldn't care less what other people do to their bodies, although I admit I just don't find "in your face" tattoos attractive, but someone might say they don't find my face attractive. So what.

Being completely lacking in artistic talent myself, I can't help but admire the artistry in some of the tattoos I have seen.

Attitudes have changed, and I admit that mine have as well. When I was a teenager only what were considered rough people had tattoos. Now they are so mainstream that they hardly raise an eyebrow.

It has to be said that the views expressed on here probably do reflect real life, so there will always be people who want to look like a piece of artwork and people who shudder at the idea.

This is probably the biggest load of bollocks I've read in my 9 years in MN!!

I had a great upbringing, my life is great. I'm happy, got an awesome DH and 3 fantastic DC.

I just like tattoos. I'm having work on a full sleeve at the minute and plans for my other arm, back and legs. I couldn't care what anyone else thinks. I love them and that's all that matters.

Bunbaker · 14/09/2015 07:29

I wonder if all those sun worshippers you see on the beach on holiday will bother getting covered in tattoos?

There seems little point in sunbathing if you can't get a tan.

Bunbaker · 14/09/2015 07:30

Developing my previous point, if you are covered in tattoos does it affect the level of vitamin D you can get from the sun?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 14/09/2015 07:34

I think the 'sailor jerry' style tattoos will look awful in a few years...

People with original Sailor Jerry tattoos are long dead.

riverwalk · 14/09/2015 08:08

David Beckhams tattoos are another good example of what I think looks stupid, because there's that many, nothing stands out, they're all just blended in to one big inky blur.

I agree, logically some people with tattoos have had hard lives but you cant extrapolate to the extant that anyone with a tattoo has had a hard life

OTheHugeManatee · 14/09/2015 08:21

I think tattoos look pretty ming much of the time. There are some good ones but as lots of those Significant Event ones just look like a sort of sentimental exhibitionism to me, as though your devotion to your sweet lil anngel is just too overwhelming to contain so you have to Biro it all over your body Hmm

But my freedom to dislike and judge them is no more important than other people's freedom to keep biro-ing tributes to their sweet lil anngel all over themselves.

Doublebubblebubble · 14/09/2015 08:23

I have 8 tattoos. Cant say I have had a hard life... In fact other than my dad being an arsehole to my mother id say that I've had a great life.

Are some of them random - absolutely

Do they all have a reason and meaning why I got them - YUP!

Are people allowed their opinion - they surely are!

Do I care? No I don't think that I do XP

Even if someone does regret a tattoo, it isn't somebody else's place to tell them to or that they will. X

iamaboveandBeyond · 14/09/2015 08:31

People who dont think about their tattoos properly are more likely to regret them. Umm, not news, surely?

I'd love to know whether mine are okay to the 'only okay if feminine' crowd. They are large, down my arms and across my chest. Does the bad-ness of the size get cancelled out by the pretty flowery-ness? Grin

Another witty MNer said that having a tattoo was like stapling a Smiths CD to your forehead.

That's my take on it too. It announces to the world how many years it's been since you were young/ keen to be cutting edge.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 14/09/2015 08:41

I don't like full sleeves. Nobody can pick out the intricate designs that make up the sleeve, it just looks like a greeny/grey, smeared blur. So they all look identical.

MothershipG · 14/09/2015 08:43

But if people didn't have tattoos that they regretted then we would't have Tattoo Fixers and DD and I love that show! Grin

I don't have any but like them on other people, I wish that there was a polite way to examine and quiz people about their tattoos, I'm nosey but respect other people's right to not have to satisfy my noseyness, it's just so frustrating. Grin Wink

PenelopeClearwater · 14/09/2015 08:46

Sleeves do not all look identical at all!! Another ridiculous statement.

MorrisZapp · 14/09/2015 08:55

To the non tattoo fan, sleeves just look like sleeves.

DriverSurpriseMe · 14/09/2015 08:58

I know Penelope!

Can't say I'm surprised by the snobbishness and narrow mindedness on this thread, but I AM disappointed.

"People with tattoos are damaged" my arse.

I don't have any tattoos. I am one of the most vanilla people you could ever hope to meet. I've had a happy, stable upbringing. I have no mental health problems. I'm planning on getting a tattoo next year Grin
