I suspect I am BU because I accept that some people like them....but why? They make the interior of a room look hard and cold and un-cosy....some people team them with curtains and that's just fussy...

They're hard to clean...can't shove them in the washing machine. How DO you clean them? They rattle....loads have those dangerous fittings...what's the attraction?

Meant to expand....curtains are pretty or striking...they're soft and flowy and the light looks lovely coming through them at certain times of the day.

I was saying the same thing yesterday, we have had two lots of new neighbours and they have both put venetian blinds up at all front windows. I think it looks like a dentists!!

MisForMumNotMaid · 13/09/2015 14:16

Having light in the house without being blinded over breakfast at this time of year.

I've got a blind in the kitchen. It rolls up out of the way of the sink. If I had curtains they would get wet.

YANBU to dislike blinds. YABU to expect everyone to agree with you.

TheHouseOnTheLane · 13/09/2015 14:18

MrsSippy the worst kind!

Miss if you want light then you have thin curtains...I have tonnes of curtains, I make them and change them seasonally.

Hate hate the vertical ones. Dark wood venetian blinds look ok on the right sort of house.

JohnCusacksWife · 13/09/2015 14:21

We have a radiator under our window so if we pull the curtains we block out the heat. So the curtains stay open and we pull down the blind at night for privacy.

catfordbetty · 13/09/2015 14:23

If a window looks out onto a public space, blinds can afford some privacy without plunging you into darkness. The only other alternative is nets - so irredeemably naff as to not warrant further discussion.

FarFromAnyRoad · 13/09/2015 14:24

Blinds any day over naff net curtains which make every room look like the downstairs toilet!

TheHouseOnTheLane · 13/09/2015 14:24

Well no....you can get window frosting....not my cup of tea but FAR better than blinds!

Oysterbabe · 13/09/2015 14:26

I like our blinds. I don't want the house to look cosy I want it to look minimalist. Horses for courses innit.

RainbowFlutterby · 13/09/2015 14:27

But if you get window frosting you can't see out. I can adjust the angle of my blinds as the sun moves round without blocking all the light.

Rainuntilseptember15 · 13/09/2015 14:28

Can you remove the window frosting when you want to? No? Then not same as blinds.
You are convinced that one size fits all, all homes are the same with the same sunlight, views etc. Just stay inside with your curtains shut and none of this will offend you.

TheHouseOnTheLane · 13/09/2015 14:29

Rainbow or if you have blinds for privacy! People usually only have the frosting half way up anyway.

I had layered curtains in a modern house in the the late 90's. I've also done the voile thing. I've lived in various period cottages with spring, summer, winter curtains (i don't know why autumn missed out). Now i'm in a modernish box with broad slat verical blinds the allow me a view, some privacy and to filter the direct morning sun glare.

They're easy to sponge clean.

Different strokes different folks and all that. Can honestly say i don't feel offended by others choices though.

FayKorgasm · 13/09/2015 14:30

I dream of venetian blinds. At least you have nets. And windows. I have chipboard covering where my living room window should be. The last tenants broke it and my slumlord landlord has been replacing it for the last two years.

BelindaBagwash · 13/09/2015 14:31

My neighbours stare in my windows even though we have blinds. It would be a lot worse if we didn't.

BockCadger · 13/09/2015 14:33

You'd rather have no view than blinds? Really?

In a business building, half a frosted window would probably look nice. I imagine it looks quite shite on someone's house unless it's a bathroom window.

TheHouseOnTheLane · 13/09/2015 14:34

Bock no....I never said that. I just keep the curtains open! What are you all hiding from anyway?

If I'm changing in the bedroom then they're closed...and shut at night too....but in the day? Open.

lushilaoshi · 13/09/2015 14:34

Ooh but lovely thick cream venetian blinds are naice.

I actually love shutters. Very cute.

JohnCusacksWife · 13/09/2015 14:35

Frosting!? Who wants to have a room where it's impossible to see out 100% of the time? You seem unduly invested in this, OP. It's really not that big a deal, you know Smile

TheHouseOnTheLane · 13/09/2015 14:35

John I'm not the one with all the !!!!

I said frosting isn't my thing...I just keep the curtains open in the day...

RainbowFlutterby · 13/09/2015 14:37

But I don't have my blinds fully shut. Not that it's an exciting view, it's just a quiet little residential street. I'd much rather have blinds that shitty net curtains. I also prefer the clean minimalist look which I don't think you can achieve properly with curtains.
