To think blinds at the window are just pug ugly and to vow never to have any?

I suspect I am BU because I accept that some people like them....but why? They make the interior of a room look hard and cold and un-cosy....some people team them with curtains and that's just fussy...

They're hard to clean...can't shove them in the washing machine. How DO you clean them? They rattle....loads have those dangerous fittings...what's the attraction?

I like the neatness of blinds, and the fact that they give you a variety of light/privacy options. Sadly due to finances I am mostly stuck with curtains.

I live on a busy road opposite a busy bus stop. Blinds mean I can enjoy natural light without those at the bus stop or on the stopped bus having a good old nosy. I hate net curtains so those are not an option for me.

As for what I have to hide? Well we're quite a naked family, and although I consider myself pretty body positive I don't need the whole town having a gander! And even if I didn't want the freedom of being able to wander around naked in my own home, with the blinds up it feels not unlike being a zoo attraction with the way people stare in.

YABU.

YABU, partly. I really hate louvre (or vertical) blinds, which really do belong only in offices. Two of my neighbours have them and it really lowers the tone of the street. As for net curtains, they ard EVIL and should be banned.

Sallystyle · 14/09/2015 12:47

I have wooden blinds in my living room. I love them.

Two of my neighbours have them and it really lowers the tone of the street.

An anonymous letter from the Society For The Protection of The Tone of the Neighborhood should sort them out Wink

We have 50mm white solid wood slatted venetian blinds - gorgeous!

Reason? Because the windows are UGLY!!!! (rented property)

So I'm hiding them Grin

BeggingYourPardon · 14/09/2015 13:04

I have roll up bamboo blinds at my front window and all the windows on my conservatory. I also clutches pearls never open my bedroom curtains.

MrsMook · 14/09/2015 13:20

I've got roller blinds that were made with a sheer fabric so they distort the view looking in, but allow the natural light in, and keep a view. Simple and unfussy. I don't know why they don't seem to be in mass production.

I hate vertical blinds in houses - they remind me of school and look unhomely. I didnt appreciate them in my last house.

TheCatsFlaps · 15/09/2015 01:03

Now BeggingYourPardon, (see what I did there Wink), I was told you should open curtains as the sunlight neutralises germs, and takes away smells. Dunno if it's true, lol!

shadowfax07 · 15/09/2015 01:30

We've got Venetian blinds up at nearly every window in this house, as DP hates nets. I wouldn't mind, but he's not the one who has to clean them. Angry. He also hates curtain tracks, he prefers the look of curtain poles, I hate them because they let in too much light when I'm trying to sleep. I've suggested we move to a rural house with no street lights or neighbours, he's not agreed to that option yet.

redstrawberry10 · 15/09/2015 10:44

When we moved in the people had huge massive curtains that take up half of the room (London).

I think only in Britain, with its awful dysfunctional heating, are curtains seen as part of the insulation. To me they look dusty, dark and awful.

squoosh · 15/09/2015 10:47

I think good curtains look absolutely gorgeous.

Windows adorned only with blinds look sad and neglected in my opinion.

fieldfare · 15/09/2015 11:09

We have dark wooden Venetian blinds at the front of the house, with curtains to 'dress' the windows.
I have a little 3 pronged gizmo to clean them, the prongs are covered in microfibre cloth so you can put it in the washing machine. I think I bought it in b&m.
