To think blinds at the window are just pug ugly and to vow never to have any?

I suspect I am BU because I accept that some people like them....but why? They make the interior of a room look hard and cold and un-cosy....some people team them with curtains and that's just fussy...

They're hard to clean...can't shove them in the washing machine. How DO you clean them? They rattle....loads have those dangerous fittings...what's the attraction?

I like blinds! (but not vertical ones, which do seem very office-y).

We're living in a rented place at the moment and were therefore reluctant to spend money on blinds, which we probably wouldn't be able to use in our next place, due to different window sizes.

But we recently discovered you can get perfectly adequate venetians from Wilksons or B&M for as little as £10. £10! Only OK if your window happens to fit their standard sizes, of course, but there's a good chance they might. A few years ago I spent over £200 to have blinds put in at another house, and I honestly can't tell the difference in the quality. We'd have done it ages ago if we'd known you could get them that cheap.

NadiaWadia · 13/09/2015 18:47

Wilkinsons that is.

WhatamessIgotinto · 13/09/2015 19:24

I like wooden venetian blinds so I have em downstairs. I don't care if anyone else likes them or not, I hate the feeling of living in a goldfish bowl.

Jux · 13/09/2015 19:24

I think Roman Blinds are the best of a bad lot.

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/09/2015 19:28

My preference is romans too, I use them elsewhere in the house.

nadia you can cut cheap wooden Venetian blinds to the right width very easily with a hacksaw

We have them in the bathroom. The shower is in front of a window and without them I'd be bringing a little bit of Amsterdam to rural Wiltshire

WhoisLucasHood · 13/09/2015 19:43

Ooh my new off white wooden blinds arrive this week, cannot wait to have them up instead of the awful nets we've had for too long. Although we have vile vertical blinds in the conservatory, cannot afford to replace the them all and not sure what we'd replace them with.

WhoisLucasHood · 13/09/2015 19:51

I like the sound of the one way view roller blinds though, I'll look into them.

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 13/09/2015 19:55

I've just had blinds fitted in my living room and they're great.
The sun comes round to the front in the evening meaning we'd have to shut both curtains to stop ourselves from being completely dazzled. Not great sitting in darkness on a lovely sunny summer evening.
Now we can pull the blinds down slightly to still let in the light but block the glare!
Best money I've spent this year!

mileend2bermondsey · 13/09/2015 20:02

DRTFT but I agree with you OP.

My parents are obsessed with blinds. Not even the nice material roman type ones but metal office-like venetian blinds. Every fucking room. I am staying here atm and have to swivel round 4 bloody blinds to effectively 'close the curtains' in a room with 2 windows! They are ugly, don't keep all the light out, don't keep the cold out like curtains do and are a mother fucker to clean.

So YADDDNU

Oldsu · 13/09/2015 20:05

I am not getting the blinds angst TBH. Confused

Everyone justifying their choice of window covering. Grin

TheCatsMother99 · 13/09/2015 20:11

I have blinds in my living room & I really like them. They were there when I bought the house 5 years ago and beforehand I wouldn't have ever chosen them but I can't imagine curtains there now.

Me neither Cheeky. I am now anxious that I have got stuff wrong all over the house. Grin

imwithspud · 13/09/2015 20:27

YANBU, we all have different tastes. YABU in your attitude though, you may not like them and that's fine. But they serve their purpose for many others.

We have blinds, horizontal ones in the living room and a cordless blackout blind in DC's room. Not a fan of net curtains, they're a bit naf imo and a pain to clean. People can easily see right into our living room. Nothing to hide from, I just like to have some privacy every now and then, and for the sun not to wake DC's up stupidly early during the summer months.

I do want to change the ones we have in the living room to cordless though.

NoMoreRenting · 13/09/2015 20:58

But what else can you put on velux windows to make it dark in summer or for baby to nap. Also who would have full length curtains on kitchen patio doors. They'd get very scummy very quickly.

BMW6 · 13/09/2015 21:19

Oh dear........

I have chestnut coloured wooden blinds in every window except the kitchen and bathroom. They have no dressing.

I adore the blinds and I chose them because they are exactly right for the period of the house (Victorian)

No curtains or nets anywhere. Easy to clean (hoover attachment). Not to everyone's taste, but there you go, each to their own.

I hate vertical blinds - too "office"

redredblue · 14/09/2015 00:18

I have dark wooden horizontal blinds and curtains
I don't think it looks fussy
Nets are ugly and naff and the window looks naked with just curtains

squoosh · 14/09/2015 10:37

I love curtains but they have to reach the floor. No short arse curtains here.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 14/09/2015 10:42

I have shutters and I love them.. DH's parents had a lovely huge house renovation, and finished off with vertical blinds. Ruined.

shutupanddance · 14/09/2015 10:44

We live on a housing estate, could do with blinds really but its on THE LIST.

HorseyCool · 14/09/2015 10:56

I have a lovely wooden venetian blind in my front dining room as otherwise people could just look in as they walk past.

Also I like the printed fabric blinds, when up they look like nothing but when you pull them down they almost transform into a feature wall. The ones I like have the detail in the middle, flower or bird etc I don't like the ones printed all the way over.

I hate net curtains though.

yabu and I think looking in the wrong shops OP
