Having read numerous threads on here recently about the syrian refugees i have noticed people making comments on religion and many posters marching in and branding them 'racist'. A race is a group of people identified as distinct from other groups because of supposed physical or genetic traits and NOT their religion, being a muslim or a sikh or a christian is not a physical or genetic trait.
AIBU to think that is not hard to use the correct terminology?

No it's not hard, doesn't stop people though Hmm

I thought there was Jewish by ethnicity and Jewish by religion?

Sunsoo · 11/09/2015 18:29

This annoys me too OP!

It is the same with culture... If you criticize a culture, you get branded racist?!?

YABU.

"...it is disingenuous to claim that Islam has no colour. There is actually quite a strong racial dimension to Islamophobia. Muslims in the UK are predominantly brown, Asian or Arab, and there have been instances where non-Muslims from Asian communities have been lumped together with Muslims and discriminated against.

After the 9/11 attacks, some bearded and turbaned Sikh men found themselves coming under hostile scrutiny. Following the more recent Boston bombings, some media outlets described suspects as being of "Muslim appearance" – whatever that is."

Leelu6 from your reply i hope you mean YANBU

It infuriates me when people refer to ISIS as a religion.

It's a military regime not religion. And ISIS are absolutely not a race.

These things are willingly confused.

Leelu6 · 24/09/2015 14:47

Sorry, yes squidzin, still new to this :)

YANBU

Also:

If some people treat Islam like it were a race (even if technically it isn't) and commit violent acts against Muslims that should be considered racism because that is how these people themselves understand their own actions. The fact that Islam isn't technically a race is just that - a technicality. It doesn't stop people treating Muslims like they were a race and, therefore, it doesn't stop their prejudice being racism.

Saying 'Islam is not a race' may be true on an abstract, semantic, academic level but on the level of what real people actually believe and how they act it is a 'race' and, consequently, the prejudiced acts that they commit is racism.

Argh, sorry, I mean YABU

squidzin · 24/09/2015 14:56

Basically you are making an error of judgement if you look at someone's appearance (black/asian/whatever) and from that you conclude their belief system (dg Islam/jewish/whatever)
To make these judgements is racist.

You can think what you want about details of someones belief system, agree or disagree, but you can't apply certain belief systems to a whole physical genesis.
