WHY are all the pound signs coming out as ?????? ARGH?!

Please forgive me for possibly the most boring comment ever. I'm such a geek, I couldn't help it.

I think that some of the comments might have been accidentally converted to ASCII. ASCII is a standard for how you represent characters in binary. It can only represent a limited set of characters, and was invented by Americans, hence it does dollars, but not pounds or euros. Unrecognised characters result in question marks.

The conversion is a bug, and could be happening anywhere between someone typing in a comment and it being saved on a database on the Mumsnet servers.

I'm a computer programmer, and in the past I've had to fix similar character encoding bugs, they're pretty common. I'm sure their techies will hunt it down eventually.
