AIBU?

to think that peas are a vegetable

DS (4) loves peas. So I give him them often and feel a warm glow of being a good parent because he is eating vegetables.

But....

I have detected murmurings on mumsnet said they are not a vegetable!!
Wtf are they then? And am I, in fact, a failure who is dooming my child's future health because he won't eat cabbage or Kale?

If you mean the Elephant & Castle shopping centre - yes, it is very much still there. It is a listed building now I believe.

What's with this insinuation from some that peas are somehow an inferior veg because of their calorific value.... Ffs

Mintyy I know that stall! I like corn but the smell of the stall puts me off. Too sweet & buttery somehow. Is the corn nice?

Elephant shopping centre listed?! Wow it must have something about it. Seemed pretty grotty. Hope it fits in with all the luxury apartments that they are building around there...

Peas are actually a seed, however because of the natural goodness they count as 1 as your 5 a day, but no technically peas are not a vegetable.

I had half a bag of Petit pois (250g) with a handful of chopped up mint, Kanye pepper and a bit of toasted sesame oil for dinner. Great for a post bike ride meal.

is your pepper the greatest living pepper of all time? Grin

The E&C shopping centre is not listed. I grant you that in that case it's baffling that it's not been knocked down yet, but there are definitely plans to do so real soon now.

"A plant or part of a plant used as food, such as a cabbage, potato, turnip, or bean: fresh fruit and vegetables"

From the OED, the term Vegetable covers everything including peas.

It's a bit like the term "mammals" - covers many species including Duck Billed Platypus and Humans

Peas are most definitley a vegetable

If you eat corn from the cob, you leave a lot of the skin behind (well, I do). There are no kernels in my poo (either sweetcorn-filled or poo-filled). Does this mean I'm missing out on the fibre goodness?

They are a seed, a fruit and a vegetable. HTH.

What the fuck do people think are vegetables if peas aren't? Seriously people, there are lots of people here telling you vegetables are just plants that you eat and still we get this rubbish about 'vegetable X is not actually a vegetable because it's actually a subset of vegetables'.

Peas in this house are missiles Grin don't worry about it. The only veg mine eat are mashed potato, turnip or cooked carrots. you're feeding them.... that's the main thing, bollocks to anyone who wants to tell you they should be eating hummus or avacado. I wouldn't even eat half the pretentious crap some people claim to feed on here

I didn't know you can't eat hummus and eat peas! (Or peasants, as my phone substituted! Loved the Kanye pepper Wink)
So the broad bean and asparagus hummus I ate earlier is an abomination too?
I have missed out on the news that peas are evil.
Still going to have pea and sage gnocchi for tea soon, or pie, peas and chips!
(Don't panic, chips will be homemade oven baked organic and pie will be vegetable with GF pastry)
Peas will be frozen, then cooked.
It's 3am; I am either dreaming or hallucinating from lack of sleep, about a world where peas aren't vegetables and are a threat to national security

I feel very deprived that there isn't a Magic Corn distributor near me. Stupid rural living...
Oh hang on... I can just nuke a cup of corn and add my own butter!

Peas are the devils food and I am delighted that I now have a valid reason not to eat them.

someone (qualified dietitian) once told me that peas 'didn't count as green veg', without telling me why.
which was useful!!

For a mega quick dinner I like to fry up some chorizo with a little bit of added oil and some dried rosemary, at the same time blitz some frozen lead in the microwave, then add a tin of butter beans to the chorizo mix and stir all together for a few mins then add the peas for another min.

delish!

Of course they're a vegetable, what do people think they are, little green aliens from Mars? :D I suppose they might be a legume or something silly like that, but who cares - they're green. they have vitamins. they rock.

Catford

holds lighter in air, sways gently, assumes 'holier than thou' expression, and, all together now:

"all we are saying...."

Minty the Elephant and Castle is NEVER listed, is it?

I have yet to meet a child who doesn't like eating peas straight from the freezer.

DD(16) will eat a bowl of rice and peas for supper about once a week. Seems OK to me.

I once lived in a very large Council block in Elephant & Castle - long before gentrification. The Shopping Centre was painted pink by the Lib Dems, they thought it would cheer it up a bit. Soon enough though, the shopping centre became a Hopping Centre.

i went to the Hopping Centre frequently. Dim dingy and a little bit scary, but cheap. Has it become naice now? Is it still a hopping Centre.

God, how I miss that place. Sad

AnyoneButAndre · 15/09/2015 18:12

The Elephant hopping centre has doggedly resisted the temptations of gentrification. Never in a million years would anyone call it naice but the Latin American tinged market on its outside fringe has a cult following. It's due to be knocked down very soon now.
