to think that peas are a vegetable

DS (4) loves peas. So I give him them often and feel a warm glow of being a good parent because he is eating vegetables.

But....

I have detected murmurings on mumsnet said they are not a vegetable!!
Wtf are they then? And am I, in fact, a failure who is dooming my child's future health because he won't eat cabbage or Kale?

Sweetcorn is a dessert, hence the name sweetcorn. Just like cheesecake is a good sandwich filling (especially with some onion and a slice of ham) and hot dogs vary wildly in size depending on the breed of dog.

I had fish and potato waffle for dinner last night with some lovely yummy peas.

Let's start a mumsnet "give peas a chance" campaign!

Legumes are a type of vegetable, the French for vegetable is legume.

Shutthatdoor · 09/09/2015 17:28

Give peas a chance

BathshebaDarkstone · 09/09/2015 17:31

0x530 I thought that was the point of fibre, you can't digest it so it makes you poo! Confused

Sgtmajormummy · 09/09/2015 17:34

A big bowl of frozen peas brought back to life with a bit of smoky bacon or lardons. Delicious, fast and everybody loves it.

tobysmum77 · 09/09/2015 17:51

Of course peas are a vegetable. Utterly ridiculous to suggest otherwise imo. They are also really really good for you and although they may have more calories than cabbage I do not believe anyone has a weight problem because they eat too many peas.

AliceScarlett · 09/09/2015 17:53

They are one of the most calorific veg. I was shocked when I weighed them out one day.

Also dates, one date has about 60 kcals. Crazy.

ethicalsusan · 09/09/2015 17:57

They are very carb heavy, we only have them once a year for a treat

ghostyslovesheep · 09/09/2015 18:13

carbs are not bad for you though - so eat peas and be happy - we need carbs to burn fat :)

Mintyy · 09/09/2015 18:14

Pmsl at peas once a year for a treat! Roffle.

JawannaDrink · 09/09/2015 18:23

vegetable just means edible plant matter. thats all.

ghostyslovesheep · 09/09/2015 18:29

I could not live without pea and feta salad

yorkshapudding · 09/09/2015 18:29

FFS, no wonder my clinic is always full of teenagers who are starving themselves half to death and cutting themselves as "punishment" for "bingeing" on half a fucking banana Hmm

As much as we like to blame the media, advertising, supermodels etc etc the reality is that kids get most of their negative messages about food from the adults around them which is why I absolutely despair when I hear people agonising about the calory content of a fucking pea! They're PEAS!! They're green!! They come from the earth rather than being man made in some horrible factory somewhere!!

Apologies for the sweary rant but sometimes I feel like the world has gone completely mad.

A bit of an aside and this is a bit disgusting but the idea that sweetcorn doesn't get digested is a common myth apparently. When you think you see kernels in your poo it's actually the skins of the sweetcorn kernels filled with poo so they look solid again. I saw it mentioned on one of those truth about food type programmes.

drinkscabinet · 09/09/2015 18:35

Sweet potato and parsnip have similar or higher calorie contents. And that's not counting the lovely oil you'd add to them whereas we all boil peas. Can't imagine anyone being snooty about someone who ate either of those vegetables. I suspect the fact that peas are cheap and popular accounts for this latest fad of not eating them.

And can I just be pedantic about vegetables. There is no botantic definition for vegetables, as JawannaBrink says vegetable can be any edible plant material. That could be a fruit (famously tomato but also aubergine or courgette), leaf (spinach, cabbage), flower (broccoli, cauliflower), root (carrot, beetroot), or stalk (celery, asparagus).

I once did a diet where I just ate sweetcorn - it was genius because it fills you up but you just poo it out!

...I'll leave now

BlackeyedSusan · 09/09/2015 18:39

in ds's case it was probably undigested sweetcorn. along with the other chunks of veggies that were visible. [eyeroll] toddler diarrhoea, fabulous.

AliceScarlett · 09/09/2015 18:43

yorkshapudding Yeah when I'd finished weighing them out I knew I'd hit a new low...

PavlovtheCat · 09/09/2015 18:44

have none of you seen the Operation Ouch episode about sweetcorn?! Shock when Zand I think inspects his poo. It IS good for you as it helps to keep you regular, even if it doesn't have huge nutritional properties. And, apparently, some people can process it, and some people can't. Something to do with whether you have the right enzymes to break it down, or, something like that.

And really. Does it matter if peas are fruit, veg, legumes, stuff from outer space? If the kid eats it. Hurrah! IMO. Anything my DS eats that is not pasta or sausages is a bonus and I don't tend to care what category it falls into Grin

ethelb · 09/09/2015 18:57

Oh not this shit again. Why on earth would something being a fruit, a legume or a grass stop it from being a vegetable? You are all making up cod-science.
