AIBU?

to think that peas are a vegetable

DS (4) loves peas. So I give him them often and feel a warm glow of being a good parent because he is eating vegetables.

But....

I have detected murmurings on mumsnet said they are not a vegetable!!
Wtf are they then? And am I, in fact, a failure who is dooming my child's future health because he won't eat cabbage or Kale?

I don't know, Clever, this is a long standing philosophical debate...

For god's sake of course peas count. It even says so on the packet. And sweetcorn.

BUT, going off topic, can anyone explain to me whether popcorn counts? It's just corn kernels (ignoring the fact you may smother it in sugar or salt)? I'm talking about making it myself at home from dried corn kernels which are clearly sweetcorn kernels dried. But then cornflakes are made from corn too and are obviously not one of the five a day! Is that because in cornflakes it's milled down as flour? Or is corn as in flour made from a different part of the plant?

School serve it as a side dish with dinners, does this mean they think it's a veg? (They are pretty healthy with their meals on the whole and the popcorn is plain no sugar or salt)

Muttar paneer (cheese and peas) is the FOOD OF THE GODS!

Corn is grass
Peas are fruit

God why don't I just start counting ketchup and squash as five a day then!

Peas obviously aren't vegetables because poor people can buy them from Iceland. And there is no moral high ground you can occupy because your children eat peas.

Technically, if you're going on botany definitions of plants, there's no such thing as vegetables. "Vegetables" are categorized based on what part of the plant they're from (cabbages - leaves, celery - stems, ect...).

Here's a fun fact that will blow your mind. Peas themselves are neither fruit nor vegetable. They're seeds. Grin

"FFS, no wonder my clinic is always full of teenagers who are starving themselves half to death and cutting themselves as "punishment" for "bingeing" on half a fucking banana hmm

As much as we like to blame the media, advertising, supermodels etc etc the reality is that kids get most of their negative messages about food from the adults around them which is why I absolutely despair when I hear people agonising about the calory content of a fucking pea! They're PEAS!! They're green!! They come from the earth rather than being man made in some horrible factory somewhere!!

Apologies for the sweary rant but sometimes I feel like the world has gone completely mad."

I agree york

Peas - seeds

Peas in the pod - fruit

Green peas - some green stuff that is ok to be eaten in moderation as part of a diverse diet.

Peas are my favourite veg.
They are a legume and some Paleo folk think we didn't evolve to eat them, whixch causes some prejudice.

I am NOT a legumist. I reject prejudice against any colour or shape of veg

Well jux, come meet mine. Can't get a pea near their mouths from the freezer or not. Sausage chips and beans is about as exciting as it gets here

The Elephant hopping centre has doggedly resisted the temptations of gentrification. Never in a million years would anyone call it naice but the Latin American tinged market on its outside fringe has a cult following. It's due to be knocked down very soon now.

I once lived in a very large Council block in Elephant & Castle - long before gentrification. The Shopping Centre was painted pink by the Lib Dems, they thought it would cheer it up a bit. Soon enough though, the shopping centre became a Hopping Centre.

i went to the Hopping Centre frequently. Dim dingy and a little bit scary, but cheap. Has it become naice now? Is it still a hopping Centre.

God, how I miss that place. Sad

I have yet to meet a child who doesn't like eating peas straight from the freezer.

DD(16) will eat a bowl of rice and peas for supper about once a week. Seems OK to me.

Catford

holds lighter in air, sways gently, assumes 'holier than thou' expression, and, all together now:

"all we are saying...."

Minty the Elephant and Castle is NEVER listed, is it?

Of course they're a vegetable, what do people think they are, little green aliens from Mars? :D I suppose they might be a legume or something silly like that, but who cares - they're green. they have vitamins. they rock.

For a mega quick dinner I like to fry up some chorizo with a little bit of added oil and some dried rosemary, at the same time blitz some frozen lead in the microwave, then add a tin of butter beans to the chorizo mix and stir all together for a few mins then add the peas for another min.

delish!
