A cheese and onion pastry is not junk food

Mil thinks it is. However is contains three veg (potato, leek and onion) and dairy for calcium.

That surely.means it isn't junk right? It has a lot of good stuff.

I make pizza at home, it's definitely not junk imo - I load it with veggies, the sauce is fresh tomato and there's no salt in the sauce or base. but then what's the definition of junk? High fat? My lo is 1 and so fats are not a huge issue right now.

I would class junk as something with no nutritional value (low vitamins, low protein etc) - I think a pasty might fit into that category. Sorry op :-(

Who cares eat it. Everything in moderation

I think she means pasty not pastry.

I would not eat it as I don't eat that kind of thing but lots of people do. Up to each person to decide what to eat.

mrsc - I don't care what the OP eats. But often people who say "everything in moderation", eat a very unhealthy diet.

Indeed. The nation is conning itself that a massive pasty full of flour and carbs is some kind of health food because it has one pea in it which is why 60% of people are fat!

Report
colley · 09/09/2015 15:53

There are people who are fat who eat healthy diets too. Not as common, but there are.
You are fat if you eat more, than the energy you expend. So too large portions of healthy food can still make you fat.

I'm now craving a cheese and tatie pasty despite the fact that I had pizza for lunch and my tummy wasn't entirely happy about that.

It is junk food but of the better kind, better than mc ds or kfc

I'm not sure! Not much between these two in nutrition info:
Big Mac
506 calories, 25g fat, 43g carbs (9g sugar), 26g protein, 2.3g salt, 3.6g fibre

Waitrose crimped cheese & onion pasty
553 kcal, Fat 30.5 g, Carbohydrate 52.1 g Of which
Sugars 5.4 g, Fibre 4.5 g, Protein 15.2 g Salt 1.46 g

As PP have said- if it's once in a while it's fine, but if you eat like this everyday it's not great.

Anyone else thinking they are going to have to stock the house with pasties before watching GBBO this evening? My stomach is rumbling just thinking about it!

Shop bought pasties are junk food. Delicious, admittedly, but essentially don't bring anything to the nutrition table, high calorie/low nutrition value = junk food IMO.

colley · 09/09/2015 16:58

Well do then. I don't think anyone here cares. Unless you post on MN saying eating McDonalds every day is a healthy diet.

The waitrose has half the sugar and almost 6 times the protein. Not similar .

Homemade with natural ingredients = not junk
Shop bought/processed = junk
That's my mantra and I'm sticking to it Grin

I wouldn't call a good quality, or homemade pasty or pizza junk. As a pp said to me junk food is something that is very low in nutritional value like sweets, or made with dodgy ingredients that may be harmful.

I don't like to see our traditional foods demonised, people in this country have been eating pasties and pies for hundreds of years. Our lifestyles have changed so we may need less calories, but they are still good food and part of our heritage.

This thread is hilarious. Of course its junk. Junk food should only be eaten at outdoor events in cold weather where lots of exercise such as hiking up steep hills or skiing will happen. This will balance out the junkiness.

HTH Wink.

Surely it just depends on what else you eat. A pasty, for one meal, if the other meals were healthy probably isn't a big deal. Some days my DD has a piece of baked salmon, potatoes and salad, some days she has pizza and chips followed by chocolate icecream! I try not to worry and look at the bigger picture eating pattern.

You wouldn't see the French saying their much loved traditional pies are junk, or their bread or cheese or even patisserie. They would insist on top quality products though.

There are more important things to worry about OP.

Next time, buy your MIL a pasty so she can she for herself just how delicious they are!

Are you kidding me?! Chicken nuggets and chips at McDonald's are less points on WWs than a pasty from Greggs!

But seriously though, we all need carbs. They are vital to our bodies working how they should. Runners load up on them before runs and everything!
So go on, OP. Enjoy that pasty! Live and let live I say!

'Unclean' food is the new childhood taboo - its has replaced the Victorian obession with masturbation sex as deviant/immoral behaviour which will leave our children with lifelong damage.

Greggs pasty = self abuse, eternal damnation and frigidity/impotence/sterility lifelong obesity/social exclusion and early death from heart disease.

Yes we all need carbs. But very few of us apart from growing children and marathon runners need anything like as many as we've been led to believe we do.

TheHouseonthelane - One sprout wouldn't be part of your five a day but a handful would. A handful of sprouts dipped in sugar and deep fried would still be one of your five a day its just that you would also be eating a load of sugar and fat. The sprouts are still there.

If you eat a salad with junk food or covered in calorific dressing, it's still vegetables, its still one of your five a day. The goodness doesn't disappear because you eat it with bad things.

LapsedPcaifist - Not true. I don'r see people condemning the OP here. Simply saying she is wrong to say this is not junk food.
Eat McDonalds and cake every day if you want. Just don't then say you are eating a healthy diet.
