AIBU to think that Trident is no longer relevant to modern warfare & that the £100bn (estimated) cost would be far better spent helping the NHS, the refugee/migrant crisis and many other issues?

I just don't see why we need Trident these days and can't help but think the money would be better spent elsewhere. Surely this type of deterrent belongs to the cold war and isn't really effective when thinking of the threats from ISIS and other such groups?

Would love to hear your thoughts Smile

Much as I hate nuclear anything, you cannot un-invent nuclear weapons. The point is they're a deterrent and without the Uk having any deterrent, and lots of other countries having them, it seems sensible to keep Trident?

The cost is ridiculous and yes, the money could be better spent elsewhere but we give billions of pounds to other causes abroad which perhaps could be reined back and used for our own welfare.

Unless the entire world decommissioned their nuclear weapons, which will never happen, the deterrent idea won't work.

Saying that, The weapons of the future will be way more easily 'usabale' than Trident.....and leave no trace from where they came. So who knows.

ghostyslovesheep · 08/09/2015 18:05

I am firmly anti nuclear weapons so I would scrap them

What if the French turn nasty? You can't be too careful where they're concerned.

YANBU

I thought the whole point of Trident is as a deterent.

So billions on something we don't want to use Hmm

Verbena37 · 08/09/2015 18:20

U.S., Uk, Russia, France, China, Isarael, Pakistan, N. Korea and India.....
Or perhaps nobody has any....the perfect deterrent.....that we all just think we all have them.

China, U.S., Russia, UK, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea (probably), Israel (probably), Iran (possibly), Belgium/Italy/Germany have some shared thing going on.

MaidOfStars · 08/09/2015 18:23

(The Iran thing is tongue-in-cheek, I don't think they have weapons).

MaidOfStars · 08/09/2015 18:24

Would it be possible to enter into a shared programme with EU countries?

MaidOfStars · 08/09/2015 18:25

Maybe Trident has already gone and the government are trousers get the cash?

MaidOfStars · 08/09/2015 18:26

Trousers get = trousering

Because of the way Govt contracts work we are obliged to replace Trident or spend even more money to compensate for breaking the contract. Getting rid of it is not an option, so the debate is pointless.

Weathergames · 08/09/2015 18:34

I can assure you they haven't already got rid of it - OH is on it Wink

Has anyone noticed Russia is not looking like our best mate at the moment? Putin scares me a hell of a lot more than Isis and he has bigger guns

And the govt never get bribes from arms companies do they ?

YouTheCat · 08/09/2015 19:12

With the nuclear weapons these days, there wouldn't be time to send ours anyway and what would it achieve? Annihilation - pretty much.

They are utterly pointless and the money could be put into education, the NHS, tackling poverty, amongst other things.
