To think this man only approached me because I was a lone female

Was driving earlier and the car infront of me pulled over to the right to turn and I then slighty moved to the left to get around him. It was easily done to move around him.
A male cyclist who was behind me then started screaming "what are you doing stop"
Like he couldn't see from the start that the car was turning what did he think I was going to do stay and wait? It was a large road and wasn't a squeeze and the cyclist was behind me so I had right of way!
Anyway so he then bangs on the back left side of my car and I put my finger up to him.
Then there are traffic lights ahead, I watch him out of my window and he is coming up but it looks like he's trying to suss out if I'm with anyone
He then comes up to my window banging on my window asking me why I put my finger up at him and I did it again and told him to fuck off and that if I wasn't female he wouldn't of approached me
He then rode off swearing.

I'm not a feminist or anything so don't get me wrong but I feel this way a lot about male drivers. I notice when I drive my boyfriends tinted Audi nobody drives up my arse or try's to shout at me but in my little KA which known to be a girls car males are constantly trying to bully me with tailgating/flashing ect

Anyone else have this issue?

There have been some interesting first posts on here in the last few days . . .

Cut the crap, please. A lot of people changed their usernames in the wake of the hacking and perhaps some of those people are only just deciding to post. Of course it'll look like they're newbies.

Back to the OP, and I feel there has been unreasonableness on both sides.

DowntownFunk · 07/09/2015 20:02

Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of a lot of cyclists on the road we do have to treat them as if they were a small car. That is, don't cut them up, give them plenty space etc. You may want to revisit the Highway Code to check on that manoeuvre you did.

Agree though that if you were a six foot muscle man he wouldn't have said anything.

mum11970 · 07/09/2015 20:02

I used to cycle a lot and the quickest way to end up dead on a road bike is to undertake near junctions. The cyclist should have anticipated the car in front of him would change position to avoid the car turning right. The op should have checked her mirror but the cyclist was the one who put himself in a very vulnerable position.

PastaLaFeasta · 07/09/2015 20:03

The cyclist was coming up from behind you, you did a manoeuvre that I'd consider fine and have done plenty of times before. You'd check your mirrors and see traffic coming from behind and whether they are a cyclist or a HGV they will have to slow down while you completed the passing of the turning/waiting vehicle. Unless you had cut him up this cyclist doesn't consider himself to be subject to the same rules as a car and believed his path should always be clear and shouldn't be slowed down irrespective of the flow of traffic, I'm sick of the sight of cyclists going through pedestrian crossings and cycling on pavements during th school run. Although I am unsure what the rules are for a cycle path, are cars allowed to use it to pass waiting vehicles?

I won't comment on the swearing but would imagine that a large man may be treated differently as there would be slightly more possibility of violence. I actually think people do react differently to people based on appearance/gender etc, it's unconscious mostly but it comes from men and women eg - messy children at the park, with mother = neglectful, with father = ah bless he's doing so well. However, you cannot prove you'd have been treated differently in this situation.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/09/2015 20:03

Maybe we need to start a DH lookylikey thread. We've got Jason Statham, Liam Neeson and John Cena at my count.

OP, glad you have converted to feminism. Your badge is in the post. Wink

Yeeeeeah, "feminist" is not a dirty word Hmm

Yes, men are often rude to lone women because they think they can get away with, cyclists are often precious, but without being there it's hard to judge. It does sound like to should have checked your left wing mirror before moving out. If the cyclist was behind you he's unlikely to have been able to see what the car in front of you was doing in order to predict your possibly dangerous movement.

You were trying (and failing) to sound threatening.

No I wasn't (trying to sound threatening), but if you want to read it that way, knock yourself out; I'll be here quaking at the thought of a visit from you and your three brothers. I've only got a sister and I bet she'd be rubbish in a fight, like me.

I'm an only child. It's not looking good for me in the siblings square-off, is it?

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/09/2015 20:13

My Dh looks like George Clooney in the ER days.

Dh is 52 but looks a decade younger and I think has aged better than poor George.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/09/2015 20:21

Grin anyfucker. Dustin Hoffman in non Tootsie role is very nice too.

JeffreysMummyisCross · 07/09/2015 20:24
