The use of the word "Uni" as opposed to University.

It really bugs me.

It started around the time the first Australian soaps were shown back in the early 1980s (Neighbours etc.) because they use that term in Australia - apparently.

Nobody ever referred to it as "Uni" before that in the UK - it just annoys me and I always say University because Uni sounds daft.

Just my opinion of course.

Get a grip.

Salmotrutta · 06/09/2015 09:25

Charming.

I did point out that it was trivial so why did you click on the thread.

LolSmile

Twooter · 06/09/2015 09:26

It used to make me really twitchy too for the same Aussie soap reasons. Less fussed now.

Flashbangandgone · 06/09/2015 09:26

I admit it grates a but when first used.... No reason, just did.

Do you get annoyed when people say 'bus', 'phone' or 'tele'?

Salmotrutta · 06/09/2015 09:28

No, phone, telly etc. don't bother me I the least it's something about "Uni" that bugs me - must be the sound Grin

Yooooo- neeeee

InimitableJeeves · 06/09/2015 09:29

I can't see why it has to be abbreviated. I dislike "indie" for independent more, though.

NullaBore · 06/09/2015 09:29

Yabu. Neighbours didn't air until mid 80s. Blame someone else.

kelda · 06/09/2015 09:29

I feel the same. I went to university 20 years ago and it was called university then. Sometime since then it's changed to uni.

I used to feel this way but I've got used to it over time and even use it myself now - sorry!

ovenchips · 06/09/2015 09:32

I am old enough to have used 'college' as the general term and do feel like 'uni' crept in after Neighbours/ Home and Away.

It does sound shite. But I do now say it Grin

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 06/09/2015 09:32

I try to use university as opposed to uni for the same reason as you; it's bloody annoying and remember Neighbours popularising term.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 06/09/2015 09:34

*the term.

Salmotrutta · 06/09/2015 09:34

Nulla - early, mid 1980s it was a rough guess when neighbours started because I could remember exactly but it was definitely the fault of Neighbours, Home and Away, etc. etc.

OP posts:
Salmotrutta · 06/09/2015 09:36

couldnt remember.

It definitely the sound that bugs me- all that drawn out "Oo" sound.

CarlaJones · 06/09/2015 09:36

Telephone and omnibus only have three syllables, so it's understandable that university with five would get shortened.

londonrach · 06/09/2015 09:38

Yabu. I dont know anyone who used the whole word when i was a uni apart from on cv and exam papers. Our shop on site was called uni shop and everything if i remember had the world uni not university. Mind you this was some time ago.

Salmotrutta · 06/09/2015 09:40

It might be understandable Carla but that doesn't stop it being an annoyance to my ears.

Other abbreviations don't have irritating sounds in the same way!

OP posts:
SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 06/09/2015 09:41

I think it was 1986 because I had just started uni.

Grin
AsTimeGoesBy · 06/09/2015 09:42

I like it, it's a useful abbreviation especially when writing, but maybe that's because I went to a poly.

MyNightWithMaud · 06/09/2015 09:46

I agree with you, but have (almost) acquiesced over the decades and occasionally catch myself saying it.

Salmotrutta · 06/09/2015 09:47

I say barbecue but will say phone, telly, fridge etc.

Some words just sound very daft when shortened.

I worry that the youth of the future might not know there was ever a full word that was "University" Shock
