The use of the word "Uni" as opposed to University.

It really bugs me.

It started around the time the first Australian soaps were shown back in the early 1980s (Neighbours etc.) because they use that term in Australia - apparently.

Nobody ever referred to it as "Uni" before that in the UK - it just annoys me and I always say University because Uni sounds daft.

Just my opinion of course.

Could be worse. People could be saying 'school' for university as they do in the U.S. That would really confuse.
I went to 'Poly' btw and that was shortened to Poly or college.

So it's now been in use for nearly 30 years - isn't it time to make your peace with it?

Tangoandcreditcards · 06/09/2015 09:57

I think YABU only because it's an abbreviation that is now a whole GENERATION old. You probably need to let it go.

G1veMeStrength · 06/09/2015 09:58

You(nee) Are Not Being Unreasonable.

It is neighbours fault. They all used to hop in the Ute to go to Uni, you know.

Tangoandcreditcards · 06/09/2015 09:58

Snap 60s.

YouTheCat · 06/09/2015 10:02

I went to university over 25 years ago.

It was called the Poly then. Grin

Salmotrutta · 06/09/2015 10:03

I can't let it go.

It's too annoying - that ridiculous sound.

Wink

My dsis loathes abbreviations such as this. It is SO easy to wind her up Grin

derxa · 06/09/2015 10:04

Yes *Euphemia" it's The University of Glasgow for me. My DM went there as well and she hated this Uni business. It did start in the '80s. I could say more and further confirm my complete snobbery

swimmerforlife · 06/09/2015 10:12

YABU, Neighbours didnt even start until 1986 and Home and Away followed in 1988 ;)

It's just an abbreviation, I really don't see the point of making every long so that it takes so long to say. I had a principal like that, she was things like "examination" instead of just "exam, assemblies really did drag on.

When I went to Uni University (early 00s), I always called it "uni" as it was a lot simpler. But in my defence I am a kiwi, so it must have made it's way from over the ditch.

HidingFromDD · 06/09/2015 10:14

YABU. I went to university before neighbours started. We called it uni then. I had friends who went to polytechnics. We called those poly

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 06/09/2015 10:17

Surely ones' dc go to varsity? Wink

TheFallenMadonna · 06/09/2015 10:19

I said College. The fact that my college was part of the University of London was barely acknowledged.

Salmotrutta · 06/09/2015 10:21

See, Varsity doesn't sound stupid.

Pretentious maybe, Grin but not stupid.

Bakeoffcake · 06/09/2015 10:21

I went to uni in Scotland and everyone called it uni there, before Neighbours started! So it isn't an Australian thing at all, it's much closer to homeWink

jeronimoh · 06/09/2015 10:21

I say college. It winds the 'University' snobs up nicely.

Bakeoffcake · 06/09/2015 10:22

And Dd has just gone to University in America but they call it College thereHmm

Bakeoffcake · 06/09/2015 10:23

Oh xpost thereGrin

GudrunBrangwen · 06/09/2015 10:24

I hate it too. I don't know why.

It's just one of those things. I hate a lot of things that remind me of my 20yo self, though.

jeronimoh · 06/09/2015 10:24
Grin
Salmotrutta · 06/09/2015 10:24

Bakeoff - I'm Scottish, attended Scottish University back in the day and nobody said Uni then!
This was late 70s/early 80s.

YANBU It is a horrible word. Do you also hate "leccy"? It makes me cringe.

DotaDay · 06/09/2015 10:32

I use the term Uni all the time. Grin and, if I say University out loud I pronounce it Uni-varsity (just for the lolz though Wink )

I went to a 'tech' and not Technical College.

Bakeoffcake · 06/09/2015 10:33

I went in 1983, you're obviously a lot older than meWink
