BBC is homophobic for not allowing a same sex couple for strictly

I can't think of anyone that isn't homophobic from being offended by two guys dancing.

The BBC sounds very outdated by saying this is because its a "family show".

Tis Saturday. The Spelling and Grammar Police must take one night a week off, mustn't they?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 05/09/2015 19:41

Yup far more sexism than homophobia in Strictly.

If you want something to worry about of course. Personally it's not something I care about hugely in the great scheme of things.

TheRealAmyLee · 05/09/2015 19:45

It's mixed couples ballroom dancing which is judged. If they had a same sex dancing couple it would throw everything off in terms of judging and voting. Nothing to do with homophobia.

Sounds like CJ is playing the homophobia card to try and get sympathy because they didn't want him for whatever reason.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 05/09/2015 20:02

They don't want him because he's a total nobody. Sorry, a total nobody who demands the whole premise of the show be changed just for him. Total ego maniac.

I quite fancy getting paid a shed load to train myself into shape with a professional dancer so I think they should change the rules just for me and allow me on the show. I'm not a celebrity so they'd need to change the premise of the show just to accommodate me but I think that's fair enough. Never mind nobody wants to watch me fake tanned up and shimmying about in 5 sequins and a strip of Lycra,

laureywilliams · 05/09/2015 21:23

Has CJ refused to dance with a woman?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 05/09/2015 22:01

Apparently. Although according to the bottom of this article the BBC never wanted him any way. Despite his agent offering...

A BBC source told Newsbeat: "We never approached nor had any plans to approach CJ to participate in this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing.
"CJ's agent gave us the opportunity to consider him but there was only one person we ever wanted from Eggheads and that was Jeremy Vine and we are delighted that we got our man."
The Eggheads star said: "That's fair enough. Jeremy is a wonderful guy and I love him to bits.
"But, to say that they were never seriously considering me I don't buy that because otherwise they would have told me very early on."

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/09/2015 22:12

You typically get g/g couples (especially at lower levels) because there just aren't enough men to go around!

In general, ladies don't like men dancing together because they have a massive advantage in terms of strength and movement over the floor and they could dance with two women.

There is a same-sex championship though.

Bakeoffcake · 05/09/2015 22:19

I don't want to watch two men dancing together as l like looking at the dresses swirling round.Grin

OddlyLogical · 05/09/2015 23:31

I don't want to watch same sex couples dancing in the same competition as M/F couples. I wouldn't mind it in a different show, but I want to be able to compare them and I think a mixture of same and different sex couples wouldn't work.
Nothing homophobic about the decision. Never heard of CJ, but he is an arse.

mom2twoteens · 06/09/2015 00:01

I think accusing the BBC of homophobia is a bit much. The Beeb has had gay couples in other shows and gay people on SCD.

From my POV seeing two guys in tuxes or two women in flouncy dresses would spoil the overall look of the dance. Also as Riverboat said the moves wouldn't be right as there are definite male / female moves and they way they hold themselves is different. Two people wearing the same clothes and doing the same moves would be quite different. It would spoil the look of the dance.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/09/2015 00:23

Funnily enough, for me it depends what they're doing - for example can look great danced girl/girl (that's a big amateur comp final, and there are at least three g/g couples there).

Of course strictly isn't like a normal comps in that couples aren't on the floor at the same time. I don't know if that would make it easier or harder to compare though Confused G/g Latin also typically includes a lot more side-by-side/shadow work that a m/f couple would.

The other thing of course is that the pros won't be used to dancing same-sex competitively, it's much easier to teach what you know!

BringMeTea · 06/09/2015 01:14

Hmmm. If CJ seriously insisted on dancing with a man then he's daft. I do have to say I think he is a jolly nice man. He runs half marathons to raise funds for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. Gotta love that.

LovelyFriend · 06/09/2015 09:44

I read an article about this now - reeks of CJ self publicising off the back of something that didn't even happen.

Also makes me wonder why he would be so adverse to dancing with a female professional?

IMO this is a non-story, and he simply promoting his own agenda.
Might be a little bitter he wasn't asked to be on Strictly.

BBC were a bit daft with the "family values" comment though.

LovelyFriend · 06/09/2015 09:51

This all male ballet show are incredible and worth catching if you love dance and humour! they tour in the UK every year: trockadero.org/

wowfudge · 06/09/2015 10:05

Met CJ a few years ago - can't really say much about the circumstances, but it's all about him: shameless self-publicist. I also remember he made a speech where he came out with something which was quite obviously utter fabrication unless you were extremely gullible. It just wasn't possible.

He may have been a model but who chooses a surname that means 'the beautiful' for themselves?

Mrsjayy · 06/09/2015 10:10

Soo his agent goes to the bbc producers saying my client is offering to do strictly but wants to change the show the bbc producers say who ? Oh him nah jeremy vine is more famous hes doing it. Cj (whoever he is) takes the huff and spouts homophobia meh

Kamikaze12345 · 06/09/2015 11:39

there are no gay CBBC or CBeebies characters - ahem Bertie, have you forgotten Tinky Winky? Grin

Kimbomc · 06/09/2015 13:04

The BBC only want gay people when they are camp and comical. If they we're even slightly sexual they wouldn't be on.

KanyeWestPresidentForLife · 06/09/2015 13:18

I think it's entertainment value rather than anything else. In terms of physicality there is a lot of stuff like lifting which just can't happen so it's not that entertaining to watch.

You see similar things with the 'joke' contestants like Anne Widdecombe and John Sargent. But putting a same sex couple on as a joke act would be more homophobic than not having one at all.

hackmum · 06/09/2015 13:22

I really think that ballroom dancing has very rigid and traditional sex role assumptions built into it - women in flouncy dresses and high heels and slathered in make-up, men performing the lifts etc. Probably the best way to challenge that is by doing a different kind of dancing rather than trying to introduce same-sex couples, which will just make things more complicated on a programme like Strictly without challenging the basic premise.

Beholdtheflorist · 06/09/2015 14:11

Well, they managed it on Dancing With The Stars in Israel back in 2011:

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 06/09/2015 14:50

Andy on CBeebies is gay isn't he? Not that his sexuality is the slightest bit relevant to his job. Which is kinda the point.

LovelyFriend · 06/09/2015 20:32

I think the Israeli example is probably more about pinkwashing than anything else.

dementedma · 06/09/2015 20:41

Robin Windsor.....mmmmmmHMMMMMM!

Mrsjayy · 06/09/2015 22:14

ALL of the male strictly dancers are as camp as a row of tents so you cant say the beeb only like the camp gay comedic type imo.
