To hate that ex h feeds dd aldi squash that contains aspartame

That really.

I've tried giving sainsburys stuff that is aspartame free but he keeps buying aldi own brand that has it.

What squash do people recommend? I'd like one xylitol or stevia without artificial anything or preservatives.

at what point does a human being not drink water? Confused

What happens to babies in countries where there's no alternative? do they die of thirst?

00100001 · 04/09/2015 10:50

I do rather think that sometimes, people worry far too much about the amount of fluids a child is having - people are constantly offering kids drinks all day long.
There is no need to be drinking water at every available opportunity and adults and kids get fluids from food as well as water.

Lemonfizzypop · 04/09/2015 10:52

A lot of kids don't drink enough though, and it can cause constipation and bladder infections if you're prone to them so it's not UNimportant.

Of course kids will drink water if there is nothing else but flavoured water does sometimes help people drink more, water is quite boring tbh.

goblinhat · 04/09/2015 11:08

Why are you even giving a child squash?

SistersOfPercy · 04/09/2015 11:13

I'm really sensitive to the stuff. Crippling stomach pains, headaches, nausea etc. I'm so sensitive to it I was once prescribed a tablet that apparently had a sugar free coating and even that made me Ill.
From a purely selfish perspective is like to see more alternatives to it (I think Pepsi has recently stopped using it so I can drink diet Pepsi again!), especially with things like chewing gum, and lemonade actually, it's really hard to get aspartame free lemonade.

The kids drink it, I don't believe it's harmful especially and it doesn't bother me that they ingest it, as long as I don't its all good.

I would have thought so.

We are lucky because if your in the UK they take them into hospital and bung them on a drip or if food issues are also an issue they tube feed them

hibbleddible · 04/09/2015 19:59

needs It is ridiculous to say children would die of thirst rather than drink water.

I also doubt you will find children placed on a drip in hospital who are completely well, and just refuse to drink water instead of squash Hmm

superspamiam · 04/09/2015 20:03

So would you rather he gave squash with sugar in then? It always makes me wonder why people get so worried about a substance that has been extensively tested to be harmless, whereas are completely happy to give fruit juice and granola etc which are loaded with a substance which is proven to harm! Sugar is the real problem not sweeteners. In an ideal world though water is obviously best.

Reubs15 · 04/09/2015 20:15

If that's the only issue he's not doing bad is he!

WorktoLive · 05/09/2015 06:55

For the poster who wants sweetener free lemonade, Sainsburys sell it. I think most of their own brand drinks are sweetener free and hopefully long may this continue.

You are right that it is hard to find drinks that don't contain artificial sweeteners. food and drink with artificial sweetener in tastes disgusting if nothing else.

Hello hibbledibble, a pleasure to meet you.

My DD has been hospitalised twice for dehydration. Once at 14 months, once at 3 years.

She was a water (and milk) refuser pretty much from when she came off the breast.

In 2009 she spent 3 days in hospital in Cyprus after not drinking for 3 days straight - because we went 'hardline'. I nearly lost her. She didn't drink plain water until she was 7.

Please don't say it is 'ridiculous' simply because you haven't experienced it. You don't know what you are talking about.

Lurkedforever1 · 05/09/2015 09:18

In fairness though ex your dd is an exception to the rule, most kids will drink water when there's nothing else. Both dd and I hate milk, and would refuse it to the point of urine infection as long as we were getting some liquid from food, but for all we can't stand it I'm sure we'd drink it before hitting the level of dehydration your dd has. I also hate most sugary drinks, but I clearly remember on one occasion being so thirsty I drank almost 2 litres of Pepsi in practically one go, and used the small amount of water available to get rid of the taste because there wasn't any other alternative there and then, and most people would do the same, your dd isn't representative.
We've had toddlers/ children out with us who don't drink water, that after a fair amount of running about will guzzle it down when the only other option is waiting another hour. I've also found plenty of none water drinking ones that given the choice between a cup of juice, and helping themselves from a hose when they've seen others do it suddenly decide water is what they want.

whattheseithakasmean · 05/09/2015 09:23

OP, maybe you should get back together with your ex so you can control your child's access to aspartame. Seems the only sensible solution to me (apart from getting a grip, there is always that...)

DisappointedOne · 05/09/2015 09:29

lemonade actually, it's really hard to get aspartame free lemonade.

Waitrose do an own label lemonade without aspartame (sugared and non-sugared).

quangotango · 05/09/2015 09:31

there's no scientific evidence that aspartame is cancerous in humans. I suspect it probably is, like many things, in massive quantities. don't think there's any harm in avoiding it, I try to with the kids, but I don't get upset about them having it at parties etc. I also drink shed loads of diet coke as it is the only thing that gets me through the days with 3 kids and a full time job. Got to be the lesser of 2 evils IMO compared to the people I know that neck a bottle of wine every night to achieve the same.

you can get squash in waitrose which is sweetened with sucralose rather than aspartame, maybe you could send her with that? (although no idea about sucralose, any artificial sweeteners probably aren't that great)

DisappointedOne · 05/09/2015 09:38

I do hope your child isn't exposed to bananas or tomato juice, OP. They contain more of the 3 ingredients used to make aspartame than soft drinks!
