To be shocked at BBC coverage of pirates in Somalia.

There's been a crackdown on piracy off Somalia by western navies and it has decreased.

The report was very, very emotive and was sympathetic towards the pirates who it described as being out of work. There was a lot of sympathetic head nodding to a man who was complaining because he couldn't steal £3.8 million dollars per ship like the good old days.

There was also some disapproval over pirates being in prison and they did some sad face interview.

At the very end their was a bit of lip service to the danger of pirates returning.

But the general tone was what absolute bastards we were for stopping the poor pirates making a living.

AIBU to wonder what was going on in their heads when they did that report?

The Beeb has form for feeling sorry for the poor murderous pirates. Here

I didn't see the Pirates being described as now "out of work", but an explanation of unemployment/no income, given as a reason why they had to resort to criminal acts.

Luckily we've helped to build prisons, so only the Women and Children will suffer from malnutrition and disease.

They were described as 'out of work'. That was the exact phrase used. There was a bit about the crackdown and then the reporter said that the pirates were now 'out of work' as though they'd been deprived of a legitimate career by the crackdown.

Then they cut to the reporter interviewing an ex pirate who was bemoaning the fact he could no longer do £3 million + heists and the reporter sat making sympathetic noises and looking sorry for him.

Then he went to a prison which was paid for out of western money said disapprovingly that the pirates were in jail with Al-Shabab terrorists. Why? We put terrorists in with the general populace over here too.

The whole tone of the piece was that not allowing piracy was imposing dreadful hardship and the pirates were hard done by.

I've just watched it again and the ex pirate is stating that without employment he has no choice.

These, although involved in crime, are vulnerable, because of the level of poverty suffered, which makes them ideal targets to be recruited into Terrorist activities.
