To think that some aspects of Christianity are scary and sexist

My friend's cousin has posted, and is staunchly defending this article on facebook

I don't think I really realised before just how a sexist modern Christianity can be.
The gist of the article is that a woman shouldn't really be a police officer because she would have to give orders to men and that threatens their manhood and isn't a very womanly thing to do Hmm
Aibu, or should I have realised this before?

that article does not represent Christianity!

CwtchesAndCuddles1 · 31/08/2015 18:44

YABVU to think that article is representative of the majority of Christianity!

Dadistired1 · 31/08/2015 18:45

As a Christian i find your title rude and just as bad as saying all muslims like isis.

There are 40000 denominations of christianity, some sexist, racist and homophobic some the complete opposite.

My denomination has women vicar, and many women as part of the church clergy.

I am a liberal christian so do not agree with homophobia, sexism and racism that some christians believe in.

Please do not assume christians are sexist it is far from the truth.

LineyReborn · 31/08/2015 18:46

I think you'll find there are quite a few religious and not so religious groups who espouse sexist views.

FlibbertigibbetArmadillo · 31/08/2015 18:46

Title said "some aspects" and post said "can be" think it is pretty obvious I don't think it reflects all Christianity

OP posts:
ElviraCondomine · 31/08/2015 18:48

Some aspects of some particular approaches to Christianity.
You'd not get that sort of attitude in 'my' church (which performs same sex marriages, for example, and has always had women in positions of leadership, since the 17th century)

Problem is, the ultra conservative Evangelicals are increasingly setting the agenda. They're all terribly keen on St Paul (and his ravings teachings on men being head of the family and in charge and women needing to be silent and obedient) and tend to forget Jesus and his altogether more inclusive message. St Paul gives advice to the Christian owners of slaves FFS and nobody seems to think we should adopt that particular aspect of the culture in 1st century Palestine under the Romans, yet far too many people seem terribly keen to impose the gender roles he advocates. It's a mystery to me.

hedgehogsdontbite · 31/08/2015 18:48

That article is by the pastor of a bible belt baptist church. If you think that's representative of Christianity today you're bonkers.

MagicalHamSandwich · 31/08/2015 18:50

YANBU to say some aspects of some interpretations are, no.

It's not a general thing, of course. Most practising Christians I know are fairly average folks. I know two or three really lovely ones and a handful of horrible ones.

The most horrible practising Christian I know is not actually a fundy at all and doesn't preach ever - he's a twat for entirely worldly reasons.

I'm not religious at all, but that's not Christianity. It's insecure men. Who know they're inadequate. But if you want to criticise a religion there are loads that do subjugate women, and condone child mutilation.

Dadistired1 · 31/08/2015 18:52

Elvira, evangelicals importance of Leviticus as well.

Homophobic people are hypocritics:

Watch this op, an example of a liberal christian.
WombatStewForTea · 31/08/2015 18:54

I think OP is getting a hard time here! I think it was clear from the title that she wasn't generalising all Christians. But you surely can't deny that the pastor's views are sexist? So another person has said he's part of a bible belt church - his view is that of other Christians. I find that scary. Even if that doesn't represent all Christians.

tobysmum77 · 31/08/2015 18:56

Yanbu op

The Catholic stance on contraception is as sexist as its possible to be. All about control of women, no more no less. I honestly don't understand how people can be Catholic under a pope who preaches that utter shit.

I find it really odd that people are more worried about the burkha and this is barely mentioned. I know which I'd choose

wickedwaterwitch · 31/08/2015 18:57

Only some?

ElementaryMyDear · 31/08/2015 18:57

Given that it's not so long since the Church of England refused to allow women priests, and that the Roman Catholic Church still won't allow them, I'm not sure that Christians can suggest that this view of women is that much of a minority view within their religion.

BMW6 · 31/08/2015 19:00

Some aspects of ALL religions are scary and sexist, depending on how a form of that religion interprets their doctrine.

Mysoginist wankers and psychopaths can always find something to back up their twisted idealogy.

Dadistired1 · 31/08/2015 19:06

What about atheist mysoginists

FithColumnist · 31/08/2015 19:11

Some denominations of Christianity can be scary and sexist. I would even, at the risk of provoking indignant responses, claim that a large majority of Christian denominations can be scary and sexist: mainly because the Bible is a pretty scary and sexist text in places, and the religion evolved during scary and sexist periods of history. It is very far from being unique among world religions in this, however. You find scary sexist shit in Muslim, Hindu, Zoroastrian and Buddhist scriptures as well. So by that token, yeah, YANBU.

Obviously, Christians are far from all being scary and sexist, yadda yadda, but that's not what you asked.

LineyReborn · 31/08/2015 19:12

What about atheist misogynists?

That's my dad, that is.

wannaBe · 31/08/2015 19:14

tbh, that article is so badly written that I have no idea how anyone could even take it seriously

AyeAmarok · 31/08/2015 19:15

YANBU, IMO.

TheDowagerCuntess · 31/08/2015 19:16

I find all religion - but especially Catholicism and Islam - deeply sexist, and yes, scary.

YANBU.

Skiptonlass · 31/08/2015 19:18

Most religions are pretty scary, sexist and generally a bit weird if followed 'correctly.'

The nice Christians/Muslims etc I know who would protest that it's all about love and tolerance, well they're all really nice people, but they're not following their holy books to the letter, are they? They're following the saner parts about charity/not hurting folks and ignoring the batshit crazy stuff about murdering those who wear clothing of mixed fibres (Leviticus, if you're interested) killing witches and homosexuals and how to treat their slaves.

The modern, progressive bits of various churches conveniently (and thankfully) ignore the battier parts of their holy books. Leviticus, for example, probably makes sense if you're trying to keep several thousand warriors safe, untouched by food poisoning and away from the camp follower/sex workers in the desert a couple of thousand years ago but it's not terribly relevant if you live in a semi in Guildford.

However, to say that Isis aren't Islamic, or westboro baptist aren't Christian is rather missing the point. Vile as they are, they're sticking to a literal interpretation of their core texts. We ignore that fact at our peril. We are going backwards as far as religion is concerned. Twenty years ago I'd have said that it'd all just eventually fade out as people became more secular, but now I'm not so sure. There are clearly vast, vast numbers of people out there who cannot deal with the complexities of life/critical thought about their beliefs and are happier being told exactly what to think/feel and do, with no dissent, doubt or criticism allowed. These people are easy prey for evangelicals and death cults like Isis.

Just think of George 'God is my copilot' bush, or tony Blair, with their shiny-eyed, absolute conviction they were right, and the power to send us to war. Fucking terrifying.

PenelopePitstops · 31/08/2015 19:20

Some atheists are scary and sexist.

Some Muslims are scary and sexist.

Some Hindus are scary and sexist.

Some people are scary and sexist. This is what your post boils down to.

Some aspects implies and aspect that Christians believe, I think the word you mean is denomination. As a Christian we certainly don't have the monopoly on being scary and sexist, quite the opposite in my church.

Queeltie · 31/08/2015 19:23

Christianity is incredibly misogynistic and woman hating. Not all individual Christians are though.
