AIBU to go to church if I'm not religious?

There's a local church which has lots of meetings and groups for activities that interest me but they are all with an overriding religious theme.

I really like the idea of getting involved with the local church and think it would be good for DS too as he is a complete loner and could do with a shove to be a bit more sociable. I have great memories of my church as a kid as it was a big community.

Problem is I really don't believe in God anymore at least not in the God of the bible. Would it be a complete no-no to go along and pretend I do or are churches a bit more flexible these days?

Have you thought about joining the Quakers?

I was brought up going to Quaker meeting and they are pretty chilled out on the old God front. They're not into the big man in the sky concept, but more a gentle spirituality.

Meetings are held in silence and not led by anyone, although people can stand up and speak if they wish. There was a thriving "Sunday School" type thing for kids at our meeting house too.

It's nice for a sense of community and quiet contemplation.

There's a bit of a catch 22 for people who believe in God and want to join a community of like-minded people without things becoming set in their ways. Sooner or later, communities tend to become structured and organised. It's very difficult to have a regular meeting of believers without there being some organisational stuff at some point.
