...to ask if anyone has been pregnant with a hernia mesh?

I didn't really know where to post this but Ive searched the internet and haven't really found much so reckoned it was worth a try posting here

I had an inscisional hernia (lower left abdomen) repaired with mesh about 2 years ago.

I really want another baby but I'm scared about what may happen to the hernia repair in pregnancy. The repair is holding at the moment.

My surgeon never mentioned pregnancy and I (stupidly) forgot to ask.

I'm planning to ask my GP for a referral to speak to someone about it, but real life experiences would also be useful

Has anyone gone through pregnancy with a hernia mesh?

Not exactly, but i had an inguinal hernia repaired as a child and have had two children since :) it did hold, however thanks to dodgy genes i have new problems

Bump though, in case anyone does have the same

I'm really curious about this too, I have a hiatus hernia which gives me a fair bit of bother, am on medication to control it. Surgery has never been offered to me presumably because it's only a small one. I do worry though because it is fairly bad day to day, I can only imagine how bad it could get with extra weight on it.

I have one of those too! (I'm falling to bits obviously!) I'm on Lansaprazole (sp?) which controls it and was told they don't really operate on them.

If it helps I was told I couldn't have a tvt repair until I finished having babies as it wouldn't hold. That's a mesh repair of a bladder prolapse

You may have issues as they are made of part dissolvable and part undisolvable material that is the same as sutures. They're usually stitched in place too. Best to ask your surgeon first.

I had an inguinal hernia in my groin, which was repaired with mesh about 5 years before I got pregnant. I don't know if it's comparable, it was below my bump, but other than a bit of pain (I suffered from residual pain for a long time after the op) it caused no problems.

I had an umbilical hernia repair with mesh when ds1 was less than a year old. Two years later I had ds2 and I had no problems then. (16 years later I have just had an incisional hernia repair but that was for other reasons).

Thank you for your replies

I know I need to speak to my surgeon but as it's 2 years on I doubt I'll be able to contact them without another referral, which my GPS are loath to do generally

Good to know you had no issues with umbilical hernia mesh and pregnancy
