To think you should be able to report people for parking in disabled parking spaces?

There are several of these spaces in my street. They are very clearly marked as Disabled Parking., adjacent to each other.
It is constantly being parked in by non-disabled people. And it's not hidden disabilities, as a good MNer Wink I've checked the cars and no blue badge.

There's a business nearby, frequented by a certain group. And so they park and stay there about 30 minutes or so. Sometimes they even unnecessarily leave their car parked over BOTH spaces Angry so if someone were to come and need one, they can't even use the other one. There is no need to do this, there are plenty of other spaces nearby, it's just laziness as these spaces are closer, and obviously easier to park in.

AIBU to think there should be an app or something where you can take a photo of cars, the reg number and the perpetrators and send it to the council or something so they can issue a fine?

I've looked online and all you can do is go and find a traffic warden and tell them, but they are nowhere to be seen a lot of the time.

Ring the local council and let them know if it is regular and the times it usually happens. They can come and ticket them and make money.

My dfather was a magistrate many moons ago. The local Chief of police (or whatever his title was) made all the coppers go checking people parking in blue badge spaces with no blue badge. Apparently they absolutely cleaned up loads of low level crimes as the kind of scum who park in disabled spaces whilst not caring are also the kind of scum doing muggings, burglaries etc locally. I think it was quite well documented at the time. YANBU.

OP is it just the white lining on the road that says they are disabled bays or is there signage on a pole in the street that indicates the restriction? Because without signage it's actually not enforceable and anyone can legally park there.

Sixweekstowait · 28/08/2015 19:28

it's nice of you to be concerned when it's not affecting you personally. Do what perfectly says and see how that goes - I love the idea of an app - it would be great!

DarthVadersTailor · 28/08/2015 19:28

In terms of reporting you can report this to the police. I'd personally say it'd be best to speak to whoever deals with parking/traffic orders in your local council and they'll advise you what restrictions are in place there (if any) and if they have enforcement powers they can possibly arrange for an enforcement team to take action in terms of fines etc. If the are actually obstructing the highway at all then it's a police matter and you can report it via 101.

ilovechristmas123 · 28/08/2015 19:35

there was a really good programme on last night about parking/wardens etc that also showed how also the blue badge is mis used

did you know in London nearly 50% of blue badges are fake or used fraudently, shocking

one women got caught when she parked by a hospital her partner was an inpatient at,the warden asked if she was the blue badge holder, she was not but thought because she was visiting the blue badge holder that was an inpatient she could use the badge, she got a fine, bloody right

another programme a guy was using his mothers badge she had been dead 4yrs Shock

Perfectlypurple · 28/08/2015 19:35

If they are parked in disabled they are not obstructing the highway. They are abusing the system and it is a council/parking warden issue and not for the police. Police will deal with obstruction - Ie can't get by.

I didn't know this! Let me go check which it is.

Cora I could absolutely believe that that would be the case here too. The people doing this are all the same sort of people, and I can definitely imagine that there would be other stuff going on too.

Bourdic I do like the app idea myself, I may pitch it to the council! No doubt they'd do it but only for people with iPhones looking at you, MNHQ

Do you know what really really really pisses me off? It's whenever there's a discussion about the selfish evil entitled bastards parking in disabled bays without a blue badge, it always segways into the fraudulent use of blue badges. This is then a handy justification for misusing the spaces because 'you know half of all blue badges are fake.'

DarthVadersTailor · 28/08/2015 19:41

No in a parking bay you're not obstructing the highway Perfectly, I mentioned that as it sounds busy there and often people will Park illegally if they can. But illegally parking in a restricted parking space can also sometimes be a police issue, really it depends on the authority you're in (in the authority I work in it would be the highway authority who would enforce it).

Firstly the OP should check that the disabled bays are actually covered by a restriction though, not every disabled bay is. The highway authority is definitely the place to start!

DarthVadersTailor · 28/08/2015 19:43

Aye I'd speak to whoever deals in your LA with TTROs and permanent traffic orders, they will have written the orders that restrict the bays. Smile

AyeAmarok · 28/08/2015 19:49

There's no sign! It's just the markings on the road that says Disabled.

Although, (clutching at straws) the shop is getting work done at the moment on the outside and I think I see marks on thewwall where a sign would have been previously. I might see if it's marked on any LA websites as such.

You are lovely Flowers from a blue badge holder.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 28/08/2015 19:58

Ok 50% may be fake... Horrid, but that means 50%or more- I would guess outside London- are real....

I hate. Loathe and detest people who abuse it..

Many thanks for able bodied folks who are advocating on our (genuinely disabled) behaves!

ilovechristmas123 · 28/08/2015 20:12

of course many are genuine but those that abuse the system should be punished, the abusers are stealing convenient parking spaces for the disabled

the lady that was caught outside the hospital should not have parked there, the badge was for her husband who at the time was an inpatient,im glad she got caught, she drove away to find a more suitable space and hopefully she freed up that space for somebody that was entitled to park there

Sixweekstowait · 28/08/2015 20:32

of course it's wrong to use a badge when you shouldn't but there's a £1000 fine for that - wish it were the same for the people who park without one- actually I wish their cars were towed off and crushed ( wth the drivers still inside)

ilovechristmas123 · 28/08/2015 20:45

agree,any misuse is wrong

Samcro · 28/08/2015 20:48

If there is no sign then they are not enforceable
Still makes the parkers scum though

AyeAmarok · 28/08/2015 20:54
