Its fine to bring my children up gluten free

I've been gf for 6+ years, not alergic or anything but feel so much better for it. People seem generally fine with this.

However now I have children people do seem to judge bringing them up gf. But why would if feed them something that I dont think is very healthy (grains hard to digest) and something that I don't think is very ethical (wheat production is causing more deserts due to its growing conditions).

Aibu to expect people to respect my choice and leave it at that?

Well having a set of grandparents who have sone weird obsession with feeding my children constantly. I'd do understand why the op may ask for certain rules/foods to be stuck by.

simple answer is to provide the food.

Iamnotloobrushphobic · 30/08/2015 11:29

That cheesecake would probably result in an emergency hospital admission for my child.

SuburbanRhonda · 30/08/2015 11:36

giles

My DC's grandparents were the same and I put it down to living through WW2 and rationing.

Had they been feeding them several meals a week I would have said something, but they only saw them every few months.

Gileswithachainsaw · 30/08/2015 11:40

We don't have the war as an excuse. by grandparents I meant the kids grandparents not mine. But yy it gets very annoying. I never even fed my newborns every hour/two hours.

PrimalLass · 30/08/2015 11:51

and yes avoiding wheat is crackpot if yiu are not coeliac.

Only coeliac? Bollocks.

Samantha28 · 30/08/2015 11:55

Belong gluten free is no fun. It's not a problem at home, just elsewhere . So much celebratory food and treats are contain gluten, it's hard to participate in many social events

Eg birthdays. Parties .

" let's meet up for coffee and cake "
" come round for a Chinese meal"
" let's get fish and chips "

Eating out is a pain, even if you phone in advance to check . Many restaurants just take anything contains gluten off the plate

Eg starter of pate, oatcakes and salad . Gf option is a slice of pate by itself

Eg main course of chicken, veg, potatoes . GF option is a piece of chicken ( no sauce or gravy ) and plain boiled potatoes . Yum yum

I can t understand why you'd do this for choice

SuburbanRhonda · 30/08/2015 11:57

I meant my DC's grandparents too, giles.

Guess I must be a little older than you then Blush

I think it's the "like to treat them" mentality. although I do wish they could think. Of other ways beside food.

I'd kerbed it for a while but slowly tho gs are creeping back and I've had to have words again.

course the dc think.its fantastic Hmm

but no, my kids really don't need milkshake , biscuit, dinner plus second helping, pudding plus second helping, ice lolly and sweets in the 4 hour period they spend with them Hmm

"Gluten causes gut inflammation in at least 80% of the population and another 30% of the population develops antibodies against gluten proteins in the gut. "

What is your source for this claim?

BertrandRussell · 30/08/2015 12:14

"The thing is soaf people that have a high wheat diet don't have much variety. I have a wide variety of stuff, I eat fruit and veg that many have never heard of thanks to my love of Asian shops and my veg box."

Oh, I must give up gluten so I will eat a wide variety of stuff and got onasian shops and get a veg box..........no, wait

SuburbanRhonda · 30/08/2015 12:36

Wouldn't want to be round yours once they come down from that sugar rush, giles

SuburbanRhonda · 30/08/2015 12:41

cote

It's from this website.

It's got a sidebar saying - "Like this website? Then you'll love our cookbook"

Hmm
BertrandRussell · 30/08/2015 12:48

I am going to try that cheesecake, though. My friend has CD and I like trying to make new things for her. sorry, no I don't. I eat wheat so I never try new things

Gileswithachainsaw · 30/08/2015 12:50

No you really don't Grin

I hate it personally cos it stops me from being able to enjoy having a slightly heavier day with the kids where I do a roast and a surprise cooked pudding cos they had so much crap and unnecessary sugar the day before.

SuburbanRhonda · 30/08/2015 12:51

And I bet you buy soy sauce instead of tamari bertrand

Grin
ThatDoesntMeanWhatYouThinkItMe · 30/08/2015 12:57

God no I don't have soy sauce! Its the poor mans tamari

Yet you can't even spell 'quinoa'.

Whether you're for real or not, you sound like a pretentious snob.

Charis1 · 30/08/2015 13:18

OP, if you actually believe any of that drivel you posted at 8.08, you are seriously delusional, and I am now questioning whether you are a fit person to make any judgements on behalf of any children.

Charis1 · 30/08/2015 13:20

has to be NOT, really really has to be NOT, or SS would already be there Thatdoesnt

PrimalLass · 30/08/2015 13:27

Charis1 - you think she is an unfit parent because she believes - as many others do - that gluten is bad for us?

mumeeee · 30/08/2015 13:37

YABU to restrict foods outside your family. If they are not gluten intolerant than they don't need gluten free stuff. It can be hard to find GF food and it is more expensive. I think your MIL is right she would hav to do a special shop
Why don't you keep them GF at home and when they are with you but let them have other stuff when they are with others.

sleeponeday · 30/08/2015 13:39

Wtf. I never said it was dirty , you do know what speach marks are supposed to be used for? Its is however very gluey, and many studies say not good for people. Great for putting up wall paper.

I know what speech marks (there is no a in speech, for your future reference) are, yes. You appear never to have encountered (or, more probably, noticed) scare quotes. Nor, it would seem, do you know that the opposite of "clean" is "dirty" - you described a gluten-free diet as "clean".

Studies say gluten is not good for those who are gluten intolerant. You are not, and nor are your children. Gluten is therefore perfectly fine for you all - just as well, given you are eating it unbeknownst on a regular basis.

Finally, if you communicate with others in life as you do online, I would suggest that your attitudes to eating are not all that need addressing.

As everyone is saying, YAU, and at this stage, they aren't talking primarily about the diet.

HermioneWeasley · 30/08/2015 13:46

I would LOVE to see the clinical trials that show that many schizophrenics improve when they cut out wheat from their diet.

Ironfistfunkymum · 30/08/2015 13:47

Thanks Roonerspism I really appreciate it, glad its also working out well for you.

The op isn't actually on a gf diet and does feed the kids gluten occasionally.

No I dont. I spoke about having some oat cakes when we were out and about and said I didn't worry too much if they were gf.

Well only with food, I appreciate high quality food if that makes me a snob so be it.

I'm dyslexic and don't give a fuck if I misspell something on a form.
