People who sit yawning loudly but not going to bed...what's with that?

God bless my MIL but she's been sat in the room adjacent to the one I'm in for the past hour and a half, yawning constantly...it's nighttime here...and she needs to go to bloody bed!

She always does it and it drives me mad! I'm thinking JUST GO TO BED!!

The yawns are litereally every few seconds....and she voices them....so it's not just a silent yawn but it's got an "Oh" in it iyswim.

since when did yawning mean you need to go to bed? I'm yawning no, I do't think it would go down to well if I went off saying goodnight....

I am guilty of this.

There have been several times when my DP has prodded me when I am nodding off at the computer and told me to just go to bed!

I don't know why I do this. I love my bed, why do I resist

Oh god my dad does this, drives me nuts.
Just spend a week with him. From about 9pm he does huge exaggerated yawns, arms outstretched, fists clenched, roaring, the works. Utters over and over again how tired he is.

Go to fucking bed then and stop being so melodramatic! I did say this to him one evening and he frowned and just said "but it's not bedtime."

It might be night time, but she's an adult who can decide when she goes to bed. Really odd of you to decide you know better, actually, sounds more like you just want her to piss off.

I think yawning means you're lacking oxygen to the brain.

Make her up a Thermos and send her out for a walk.

I yawn a lot, it's a medication side effect. It's bloody annoying.

I also don't always go to bed when I am tired, but that's because I suffer with insomnia and often avoid bed until it's really late.

I think the vocalising thing may depend on the person, I cannot hiccup quietly for example, because the spasm is so intense that I gulp air when it happens, which makes a lot of noise. Same for sneezing, I usually do one or two really big sneezes and the noise just falls out.

Reading this thread has set me off yawning. It's one of those infectious things, isn't it?

God I'm yawning now but I am having a rest on the bed. I've got used to having an afternoon rest during the holidays.

What is worse though is people who continually say they're about to go to bed because they're exhausted and an hour later are still jogging the remote control complaining about being tired

I'm guilty of this crime but usually it's just me in the house so not irk ing anyone...I hope!
I think sometimes it can be a bit "look at me I'm the most tired-est, hardest working person on the planet etc etc" with me, if I'm tired I yawn, if in company I would stifle accordingly (like any bodily function) to be polite (hide that I'm bored/tired/a lightweight )

I am frequently guilty of this - usually because after a day at work and then an evening of the kids plus cooking, tidying, homework, taxi-ing kids to football etc, I should just go to bed when they do but in an attempt to have some adult time of my own I stay up randomly yawning and then fall asleep in front of the TV!

I do this too, I don't know why. Sometimes I really like the feeling of being all yawny and stretchy on the sofa, watching a late night film. Especially when I don't have to get up particularly early the next day.

I yawn shit loads. Usually means I have a migraine on the way though...

I am so with you on this OP, I find repeated yawning so irritating (I also get wound up by hiccuping, sniffing etc. I'm very intolerant!)

My parents have for as long as I can remember, fallen asleep in front of the TV every evening. Just go to bed Ffs!

I find constant yawning irritating too. I also find someone going "mmmm" when they eat irritating. Constantly coughing is another. In fact, I find a lot of repetitive noises damn annoying

Dh Annoys me because he cannot have an early night. He has this 'bedtime' idea (from Mil I'm sure) that if it isn't bedtime i.e. 10pm he won't go to bed. Bonkers.

I go to bed when I'm tired, sometimes that is 7.30pm and most often between 9 and 10

another one here who has a yawning side effect from meds. doubt would look good if i lay me head down n snoozed on the office desk as much as it apparently irritates people

I completely get how yawning is irritating. My DH often sits yawning and actually falling asleep in the evening, but won't go to bed. It does bug me. However, I can't say anything as I will often stay up later than I should, yawning and struggling to keep my eyes open, simply because going to bed means it really is the end of the day, and the next thing to happen will be getting up to go to work.
